President's Message

  By George Carroll

Well, March has come and gone and our Society can now step back and take a short breath. If you missed our 20th Anniversary and Saint Patrick's Celebration, by all accounts, you missed a great evening.

Very special thanks to our Sergeant at Arms, Bill Robertson for an outstanding job as Master of Ceremonies, Disc Jockey, decorator, and plenipotentiary, ably assisted by Lynn Gutierrez.  Also on hand for set up and tear down was the entire Board of Director's and volunteers Amanda and Ron Monard, Tom Trimble, Bill Donoghue and Pat Devine.

Raffle items were in abundance and some great dinner prizes were provided by: Battle of the Dance, Joxer Daly's Pub, Corrigan's Pub, The Tilted Kilt Restaurants, Chronic Taco's, The Irish Import Shop, The Wee Canny Scot Apparel, the FBI and of course our loyal members who crafted personally wrapped gifts for fundraising.

Our Honor Guard represented the Society in San Diego on Saint Patrick's Day and again in Hermosa Beach for two well attended Irish parades. We again lent support to Bill Hallett for his after parade block party and were honored to have Hon. Consul General of Ireland Finbar Hill join us.

Everywhere we go lately, your enthusiasm and personal engagement brings new members, so keep up the good work.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in ad hoc committee's or simply attend an event in a show of support for fellow Southern California law enforcement brethren bonded in promoting Irish Police Heritage.

St. Patrick's Day Party

By Bill Robertson   With less than two months to plan, it has to be said that the board of directors, the party committee and the membership at large pulled together and delivered an amazing St. Patrick's Day Party.     The evening was kicked off with a wonderful performance by the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums.    Society President, George Carroll took a moment to introduce the boards of each Society and Honorary Consul General, Finbar Hill, who made eloquent remarks about Ireland, America, law enforcement and our Societies.   The Police Officer's Prayer was read by Reggie Miles and Father Frank Hicks offered a dinner blessing.

Since our event fell on the 49th Anniversary of Ian Campbell's murder, Ciff Armas offered a brief tribute to Officer Campbell, which was punctuated by Scott Walton's performance of Amazing Grace.   Maggie's Pub was an excellent host and provided a nice meal featuring breaded fish, shepherd's pie, potatoes, corned beef and cabbage, as well as, a variety of salads and desserts.  Following dinner, Gary 'Disco is My Life' McCauley, Tom 'Two Left Feet' Kelleher and Bill 'Jig Master' Donoghue squared off in The First Annual Emerald Society Irish Step Dancing Championship. The lads gave it a valiant effort with Bill Donoghue being crowned champion by audience applause.

The Miles Family: (L to R) James, Kevin and VP, Reggie Canale-Miles.

Once the Emeralds cleared the dance floor, the Irish Pride Dancers thrilled us with a beautiful three-set performance.   Following some door prizes, it was time for the Emerald Society's favorite games show, "Are You Smarter than a Police Officer's Daughter?" Terry 'The Answer is Guinness' McCarthy and Michael 'I Know Irish Whiskey' Apodaca faced off against a team of four young ladies, Kelcie, Kailey, Rebecca and Rory. The contestants were tested with SAT quality Irish History questions. When the dust settled, the 'Barbie-set' walked off with an impressive victory and handful of candy bars!   The pipe band performed again, more door prizes were awarded, many of which were donated by members, a 50/50 drawing was won by our president, George Carroll and dancing closed out a fun and exciting evening.

I have to give special thanks to Lynn Gutierrez, who did everything and anything, which needed to be done to make our party a success. To the board, committee and the volunteers, thank you for your contribution and commitment to the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society.

Treasurer, Tommy Kirk and his wife, Chris ran the 50/50 drawin and helped organize the door prizes.

Scott Walton

Irishman of the Year

  By Michael Apodaca

On March 16, 2012, the Los Angeles City Council Chambers was filled with traditional

Irish bagpipe music as Councilman Tom LaBonge announced our very own Scott Walton as Irishman of the Year. LaBonge praised Scott for his years of service to the Irish community and to the City of Los Angeles.   His naming as the City's Irishman of the Year is a testament to Scott and the Society itself for the promotion of Irish culture and history.

Page 5: PSLF%OYG S esociety2@gmail.com The

"I am thrilled," said Walton, "For about 10 years I've played the bagpipes at this ceremony, and to be the honoree, this year, is beyond an honor"   Detective Walton's nomination read as follows:   Scott Walton is a leader in promoting and fostering Irish culture in the community. Scott, a Detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, is assigned to Pacific Detectives.   Scott, who is also a professional tuba player, perfomed at the first National Police

Memorial event held in Judiciary Square, Washington, DC where he witnessed more

than 200 pipers and drummers representing Emerald Societies throughout the United Sates.  Moved by the experience, he committed to learning to play the bagpipes and to

being a part of the Emerald Society.  Since that time, Scott has attended every annual

event held in Washington, DC as a Piper.   Scott became an accomplished piper and with another piper formed The Los Angeles

Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums.  Drawing on his musical background and

experience Scott has risen to the position of pipe major and for the past tweve years has

lead the band, of now twenty-two pipers and drummers. Irish on his Mother's side "McDonald", his mother rears from the Irish community of Covington, Kentucky.   With his membership in the Emerald Society, Scott has learned much about his Irish herritage and has committed to promote and educating the public on the rich, but not well known, Irish culture. Scott has been a Member of Los Angeles Police Emerald Society since 1999. He is a past President and currently is the Sergeant at Arms. Additionally he is an Honorary Life Member International Order of Hibernians.   During the past year as the pipe major of the Pipes and Drums, Scott has personally preformed in more than ninety events representing the Emerald Society and our Irish

community.   In 2010 Scott committed to raising the bar for the Pipes and Drums and entered the Band into competition for the first time.  In their first competition at the Highland Games

in San Diego, CA., Scott lead the Pipes and Drums to a second place finish in there Class.   Along the way, at most performances, Scott takes the time to educate the audiences on Irish Culture and history. Other 2011 Highlights Include:

l Queen Mary Highland Games l San Diego Highland Games l Costa Mesa Highland games l Ventura Highland Games l Irish fairs at the LA Fairground and in Irvine l Hermosa Beach St Patrick's Day Parade l L.A. Live St Patrick's Day Festival l Nattional Emerald Society Pipe Band March and Mass at the Police Memorial in

Washington, DC l Five performances on Sept 11 l San Pedro Christmas Parade

I recommend Scott Walton for Irishman of the Year, for his commitment to the Irish community, for his dedicated service to the community and for promoting and educating those communities on the Irish culture, therefore enriching this Country on our Irish roots.

The San Diego St. Patrick's Day Parade

  By Bill Robertson

Billed as the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade west of the Mississippi, the San

Diego St. Patrick's Day Parade served as quite a tribute to local firefighters, law

enforcement and the military, which featured many local organizations, dance

schools and even a roller derby team.   Making their first appearance at the San Diego parade, members of the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Color Guard and the LAPES Pipes and Drums were very well received by the suprisingly large, boysterous and soggy crowd, which included children of all ages and all backrounds proving once

again that on St. Patrick's Day, everyone wants to be Irish! Here are some great photos from the parade.   San Diego Parade Photos

St. Patrick's Day Parade

The Hermosa Beach St. Patrick's Day Parade has been an Emerald Society favorite for many years.

As seen above, the Society made an impressive showing lead by three vintage police cars, which were provided by Society member, Barry Maiten.

The cars were followed by the Honor Guard and the Pipes and Drums, as we piped in

the Honorary Consul General of Ireland, Finbar Hill, who was invited to participate in the parade with the Emerald Society, by president, George Carroll.

Following the parade, the Emeralds were joined by the Consul General at Bill Hallett's home for the traditional block party, which featured more food than could be eaten, more beer than should be consumed and non-stop entertainment from two bands, as well as, the Pipes and Drums.

The day proved to be a great climax to a fantastic St. Patrick's Day season!

Irish Movie of the Month

By Michael Apodaca   This month's movie is based on the real life story of Danny Greene, a Cleveland mobster known on the streets as, "The Irishman."   The movie takes you through his rise as a union boss and into the underworld and corruption of

organized crime. There are no less than four attempts on Green's life, which he sees as a badge of honor.

Danny is proud of his Irish heritage and in a self-serving way deems himself a Celtic Warrior as a result of his survival.   Danny is played by Ray Stevenson, who was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.   It co-stars Val Kilmer as a detective who was a childhood friend and Christopher Walken as a crime figure.   I did not like Danny or what he was about; however, the movie was very entertaining. With plenty of violence and strong language, "The Irishman" is a fit for all street thugs.   This film also features Celtic music, which adds to its Irish flavor.     Most people rate it 4 stars. I'll do the same, even though; it will not make you proud to be Irish.

Irish Whisley of the Month

By Michael Apodaca   Our February meeting featured Jameson's spokesperson, Fiona Canning, as the guest speaker. She provided a great history of their whisky and its processing, which culminated in a whiskey tasting tour.

This was very interesting and informative and a whole lot of fun. This month I have decided to take you on a tour of the Jameson distillery.

Page 8: PSLF%OYG S esociety2@gmail.com The

How they begin: It is all about the ingredients: Jameson Irish Whiskey is made from three simple ingredients - malted barley, un-malted barley and pure water.

Malting: Distillers trick the barley into thinking its spring, which sprouts the barley and produces sugars. The sugars are used to create the alcohol. Drying the barley for a few days increases the amount of alcohol that will be produced. This process is called "wait for it," malted barley.   Mashing: The grist, or milled and mixed barley, is added to hot water in something called a mash tun. During mashing, the

sugars are dissolved producing a hot, sweet but oddly named liquid called "wort".   Fermentation: The wort is separated from the residual grains and pumped back into wash backs. The action of the distillers' yeast produces fermentation and the sugars in the wort are converted to a low strength alcohol or wash. The wash ferments for three days.   Triple distilled: All Jameson whiskies are triple distilled. In a pot the ingredients are bought to a boil, which vaporizes it. The vapor rises up into the still's condenser, where it cools and is returns to a liquid state. This condensation, which has a higher alcohol concentration than the original mixture, is collected in a receiving compartment. This process is accomplished two more times to create the smooth taste that all Irish whiskies are known for and produces the character and personality, for which, Jameson's is recognized.

Distillation: Then Jameson uses a number of different types of cask to mature its whiskey. Sherry barrels, bourbon butts and port pipes. Every cask is seasoned and crafted by coopers. Once casqued the whiskeys remain undisturbed for years before being deemed worthy of bottling and bearing the Jameson name.   Maturation: Casks are then vatted together to create blended whiskey, the final stage of Jamesons Irish Whiskey's

remarkable journey from barley to bottle.

Honor Guard / Color Guard

  By Bill Robertson

The Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Honor Guard is starting to take shape. Although, we are a long way from being ready for primetime, we have been well received to this point at the Queen Mary, San Diego and Hermosa Beach events.

We are actively recruiting Society members who would like to represent the Society and the Irish community at events throughout Southern California as a member of the color guard or as a banner / standard carrier.

My long-term goal is to have at least ten members (two five person geographically friendly teams) of the color guard, so that no one person or group is overwhelmed.

Following the April board meeting, I will announce an Honor Guard meeting date and time, so we can meet and discuss the future of the Honor Guard. .

We will be discussing the process of designing our uniforms (Formal and Class A) as well as the LAPES flag. We are also discussing what kind of streamers (battle, family, department), which will adorn the Society flag.

We are working to put a package deal together with Emerald Society member, Phil Bowater, The Wee Canny Scot / Melrose Castle, which will include virtually every uniform item needed (head to toe) to march in the color guard.

Sample Package Deal  (look under the package deal tab)

For the time being and as we build the teams, banner and standard carriers will be able to dress in a basic uniform of a green Emerald Society shirt, black slacks and black shoes, which will make it possible for anyone to participate without a huge financial commitment.

We are also actively seeking Honor Guard sponsors. In the next issue we will roll out the various sponsorship opportunities, which will range from $100 - $500 levels.

I am inviting you to be a part of something special.

Please contact me at [email protected] if you have the slightest interest in
