it must always be an ethical obligation to rega rd

with the utmost strictness against such decep tion

must be one o f the chief duties of any psychical

I t i s n a t u r a l l y u n p l e a s a n t f o r a n i n v e s t i g a t o r w h e n

it is shown that h e has been de ceived, let alone

a . EXPERIMENT AND OBSERVATION

Th e r e a r e t w o w a y s i n w h i c h k n o w l e d g e i s a c -

quired in any investigation of phenom ena : o b s e r v a -

t i o n a n d e x p e r i m e n t , w h i c h i s o b s e r v a t i o n , i n e s s e n -

tials, under spe cific conditions voluntarily and

deliberately determined .

Now, in describing the pos sible means of guarding

against decep tion, we must distinguish, as in all

scientific work, between obser vation and exper i-

m e n t . F o r t h e r e s t , a p r o f i t a b l e i n v e s t i g a t i o n i n t o

our field of inquiry can only be mad e after some

general considerations have been brought forward

regard ing this distinction between experiment and

observation as it applies spe cifically to ps ychical

r e s e a r c h . For matte rs are so mewhat different here

than they are in the normal natural sciences .

When the natural scientist carries out a normal

experiment, whether in the realm of the inanimate'

o r i n t h a t o f t h e a n i m a t e , h e e n t e r s o n h i s i n v e s t i g a -

tion with the definite expectation that `something'
