Psychotherapy Therapy used to treat psychological disorders, that focus on

changing faulty behaviors, thoughts, perceptions, and

emotions that may be associated with mental health disorders.

Two common forms of therapy are:

Behavior Therapy

Group Therapy

Behavioral Therapy

Behavior therapy has its roots in

animal learning models of over a

hundred years ago in the work of

Pavlov and Thorndike.

Classical Condition involves forming

associations between stimuli using

some techniques such as; flooding,

systematic desensitization, aversion

therapy

Operant conditioning focuses on how

reinforcement and punishment can be

utilized to either increase or decrease

the frequency of behavior such as,

contingency management, modeling,

extinction

1) Phobias, panic disorders, and OCD are some of the conditions this

type of therapy is used to treat

2) Focuses on changing ineffective behavior patterns

3) Focuses on consequences of actions rather than peer pressure

4) Positive reinforcement is used to strengthen desired behaviors

such as praising or giving a treat for a positive or desired behavior

5) Negative reinforcement is used to decrease and eliminate

undesired behaviors such as ignoring negative behaviors or

removing privileges or desired items for negative behavior

Group Therapy

1) 2 or more people working in a group with 1 or more

therapists, to develop social interaction or share a common

goal or outcome

2) Groups can be educational, supportive, or self help related

3) Groups can be open; meaning anyone can participate or

closed; meaning only selected individuals may participate

4) Groups should have rules, a set structure and a set tone

5) Depression and Traumatic stress disorders are treated well

with group therapy.

Evidence Based Practice

Family involvement and education is imperative for

successful psychotherapy.

There are several ways to involve family members

to get involved such as support groups and research

websites such as NAMI.
