We increased the budget for the carnival. A cotton candy machine and sno-cone machine were purchased. We will save money in the long run on these two items as renting the machine is about the same cost. We have two open positions on the board. We need a secretary and a treasurer-in-training. If you are interested, please come to the next PTA meeting. Our next big event is the Carnival. Planning is under way, and we will need lots of help on the night of the event. Please be on the lookout for volunteer requests. If you would like to help, please email us at [email protected]. A BIG shout out to Lynn Healy and all of the volunteers who helped with the art for STEAM night. The art activities were a big hit and everyone loved walking through our art gallery. Another BIG shout out to Prisilla Fisher for coordinating Teacher Appreciation week. The teachers sure felt spoiled with a coffee/ smoothie cart, catered lunch, 10-minute chair massages, delicious desserts and a Jamba juice gift card. As teachers, we really appreciated the pampering! Our last meeting for the 2016/2017 school year is Tuesday, June 13 th . Please consider attending. We hope to see you next month! Anita Hansen and Alicia Glasscock Imlay Elementary PTA co-presidents

Last Call for 6th Grade Photos By Robin Matteson

Yearbooks Are Coming!By Kimberly Harrison

The Yearbook Committee and Club are so excited to be able to share this last yearbook with you! Our distribution date of June 6th is approaching quickly! We will be distributing the pre-ordered yearbooks to the students’ classrooms mid-day, during our club meeting. If you are still hoping to purchase a yearbook, plan to have exact cash or check to Imlay PTA ready. We will have a limited supply of extra yearbooks available for $17 in the office after our distribution, first-come, first-served (no reservations are being accepted).

Robin Matteson and I would like to thank everyone for the support you have given us over the last five years. We have enjoyed sharing the yearbooks with you.

Run the PTA!(Openings in PTA Board)By Laura Conley

All positions (president, vice president, treasurer, or secretary) can be applied for. If you’re interested, please come to the next PTA meeting and introduce yourself (you can also email us at [email protected] for more information). Positions listed below do not have an incumbent to continue next year. Being on the PTA board is a great way to support your child’s education! Note: All PTA board positions include attending two meetings a month (Board and General PTA Meeting), which last 1-2 hours and are typically held in the evening.

PTA Co-PresidentYou could be Co-President with the fabulous Anita Hansen (many thanks to out-going Alicia Glasscock!). Responsibilities of a Co-President include running board and PTA general meetings, representing the PTA, and generally overseeing PTA activities. Being a Co-President is a great way to learn and be involved without being overwhelmed.

Treasurer-in-Training The wonderful Laurie Howell is willing to stay on as treasurer another year, but would like to train someone to replace her after next year. You can learn how to plan/track the budget, disburse funds, and oversee the financial side of our PTA.

Secretary The secretary keeps minutes at Board and General PTA meetings, manages the PTA email list (and emails), helps prepare/print paperwork for meetings, and sometimes helps with the official Imlay PTA Facebook page. As secretary I’ve learned a lot about how Imlay runs and have appreciated all the wonderful ways staff and volunteers serve our children.

This is the last call to submit photos of 6th graders to be included in the Luau slide show. Please email them to [email protected]. Put “Luau Photos” in the subject. The photos need to be school

related.

I plan to have part of the slide show feature baby pictures side-by-side with current photos. Please email me one baby photo (or the youngest photo

you have) of your child for inclusion.

All photos are due by May 26th.

Hello Parents,

Hopefully you’ve heard your child talk about the importance of eating breakfast sometime this year. Imlay received a grant from FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 (The Dairy council partnered up with the NFL) to promote exercise and eating breakfast. Teachers have been asking and encouraging students to eat a healthy, balanced breakfast each morning. Breakfast is a great way to give the body the refueling it needs. Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall and are more likely to participate in physical activities — two great ways to help maintain a healthy weight.

Skipping breakfast can make kids feel tired, restless, or irritable. In the morning, their bodies need to refuel for the day ahead after going without

food for eight to 12 hours

during sleep. Their

mood and energy can drop by midmorning if they don’t eat at least a small morning meal.

BrEakfast Brain powEr

It’s important for kids to have breakfast every day, but what they eat in the morning is crucial too. Choosing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein while low in added sugar may boost kids’ attention span, concentration, and memory — which they need to learn in school.

Kids who eat breakfast are more likely to get fiber, calcium, and other important nutrients. They also tend to keep their weight under control, have lower blood cholesterol levels and fewer absences from school, and make fewer trips to the office with stomach complaints related to hunger.

The morning meal doesn’t have to be all about traditional breakfast items. You can mix it up to include different foods,

even the leftovers from last night’s dinner, and still provide the nutrients and energy kids need for the day.

Try to have a balanced breakfast that includes some carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. Carbs are a good source of immediate energy for the body. Energy from protein tends to kick in after the carbs are used up. Fiber helps provide a feeling of fullness and, therefore, discourages overeating. And when combined with heathy drinks, fiber helps move food through the digestive system, preventing constipation and lowering cholesterol.

Classes will be participating in a breakfast contest during the month of May answering the question. “Why is it important to eat breakfast?” The winning class will get breakfast catered to them from the student wellness committee.

Box Tops UpdateBy Ruth Carlson

Hello! My name is Ruth Carlson and I am the Box Tops Coordinator for Imlay Elementary. As of May 3, 2017, we have received 14,310 box tops or $1,431.00. Please see the display at school to see how your child’s class is doing. Each class’ goal is to reach 700 to earn their first class treat. A second

class treat can be earned when 1,400 box tops are turned in. The class with the most box tops turned in by the end of the year will earn a root beer float party!

We have a little over a month to reach our school goal of collecting 20,000 box tops. We have 5,690 more to go. If every student were to bring in 11 box

tops in the next month, we will make our goal.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. I’m here to make our school’s Box Tops for Education program a huge success this year.

Thank you, for your help!
