10/2015 I Volume 11 Issue 04 PTC Global Maritime Professionals Commended in Congress for Daring Rescue of 9 Fishermen The PTC officers and crew of M/V Crimson Polaris, under the command of Capt. Venancio de la Cruz, were commended in Congress by ANGKLA, the Maritime Party of the Philippines, through House Resolution 2271, for putting their lives on the line in the rescue of nine distressed fishermen found in the middle of the West Philippine Sea. At the height of typhoon “Egay” last July 7, the MV Crimson Polaris, a bulk carrier (wood chip) vessel under Lighthouse Shipmanagement (LHSM) and manned by 20 PTC officers and crew, came to the aid of the nine Filipino fishermen off the coast of Lingayen Gulf. MV Crimson Polaris is owned by Doun Kisen Co. Ltd. and chartered by NYK Line. According to LTSG Alexander Corpuz, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard station at Sual, Pangasinan, the fishermen left Barangay Arnedo in Bolinao on July 2 to fish 185 kilometers from shore. As they were sailing back to shore three days later, huge waves brought about by Tropical Storm “Egay” destroyed one of the boat’s outriggers. Under the command of PTC Capt. Venancio De La Cruz, the fishermen were pulled to safety and first aid was immediately applied to them on board. Eight of them suffered minor injuries - open wounds and lacerations - due to long exposure to seawater, while one complained of weakness caused by dehydration. The fishermen were endorsed to the Philippine Coast Guard on the following day and were taken to the District Hospital in Alaminos City before they safely returned home to their families. PTC Chief Executive Officer Gerardo Borromeo congratulated Capt. De La Cruz and his crew on the exceptional seamanship and courage they exhibited at the height of the typhoon. “Their timely intervention helped save nine lives. This will serve as a continuing inspiration to all of us on the role of our maritime professionals at sea and the importance of reaching out to those in danger.” Lauding the bravery of the officers and crew of MV Crimson, ANGKLA Representative Jesulito Manalo said, “These remarkable global maritime professionals are the pillars of hope for our industry as we continually work towards further shaping the Philippines into a truly maritime nation.” Along with Capt. Wallenius Donates New Kinder Classroom through PTC-CSJ PTC Joins Metro-wide Shake Drill The PTC-CSJ Foundation recently turned over a new Kinder Classroom/Library, sponsored by Wallenius Marine, to the foundation’s 3G partner-school, Lakeview Elementary School (LES) in Muntinlupa City. The Kinder Classroom/Library in LES is the second classroom donation of Wallenius through the PTC-CSJ Foundation, covering the construction of the Kinder Classroom/Library furnished with furniture, books, school materials and supplies, as well as, the training of LES’ Kinder teachers on the academic curriculum. The project was done in partnership with the AGAPP Foundation’s “Silid Pangarap” project which is engaged in the construction and development of pre-school classrooms/libraries in public schools designated by the Department of Education in depressed and disadvantaged communities. The turnover ceremony was attended by PTC-CSJ Trustees Gerardo Borromeo and Christina Manzano and Executive Director, Flory Tabio, Jaja De Perio of PTC, AGAPP Chairperson Pinky Aquino-Abellada, Muntinlupa City Administrator Engr. Allan Cachuela and LES Principal Mrs. Buena dela Cruz. The new classroom is now being used by four kinder classes of about 130 pupils each. The PTC Group participated in a city-wide earthquake preparedness drill last July 30, 2015, in cooperation with the Metro Manila Shake Drill spearheaded by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority with the support of various sectors of the community – government agencies, schools, businesses, and religious organizations. For 45 seconds, participants performed the Drop, Cover, and Hold exercise and carefully implemented the company’s disaster evacuation plan. More than 6.5 million individuals participated in the massive exercise which aimed to promote a culture of disaster and emergency preparedness among Metro Manila citizens. Team PTC Scores Big at FAME Sporting Events Last May 14, 2015, PTC golfers teed off at the 11th FAME Golf Invitational Tournament held at the Palmer Course of Orchard Golf & Country Club in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, along with more than 80 other representatives of crew management companies, maritime associations and marine golf clubs. The Over-All Champions were PTC’s Capt. Honorio Casalme and teammate Mr. Jones Tulod of TSM Shipping (Phils.), Inc. who finished with the highest scores to win the Low Net and Low Gross awards, respectively. The“Philippine Team” composed of Capt. Casalme, along with Mr. Jones Tulod and Capt. Banny Briones of Multinational Maritime, Inc., were declared Champions for the FAME Ryder Cup. This is the fourth consecutive year that the team has been given this award. Meanwhile, PTC employees and GMPs demonstrated their badminton prowess at the 10th FAME Inter-Manning Badminton Tournament on August 8 at the PowerSmash Badminton Court in Pasong Tamo, Makati. Intense and exciting match-up games highlighted the annual event which aims to promote camaraderie and sportsmanship among the tournament’s 392 players coming from a total of 35 crew management companies. Jervy Espiritu and Miguelito Plaza of PTC’s Crewing - Passenger Division emerged as champions for the Men's Level A category while Heidi Sanchez of FMSS with partner Josephine Sace, a family member of a PTC GMP, won the Women's Level B category. For the Men's level H category, the team of Capt. Elias Parreno, PTC Crewing Manager for Komaya Shipping, and Aldin Tano, PTC GMP, was named First Runner-Up. Most recently, the PTC Running Club organized a contingent of runners for “Go Marino Go! Healthy Body, Healthy Mind,” the 9th FAME Fun Run held last September 20, 2015 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City. Held in celebration of World Maritime Day, the fun run drew more than 4,000 participants who competed in 3K, 5K and 10K races. Mrs. Josephine Parco, wife of PTC Executive Director Mark Parco, finished second in the 5K race.

The PTC Corporate Clubs has recently launched the Mountaineering Club to cater to employees with a zest for adventure and the great outdoors. The club welcomes not only novice and experienced climbers, but outdoor and photography enthusiasts as well, to participate in various activities such as hiking, trekking, tree planting, nature and photo walks. Interested employees may call HRD at local 2317 to sign up.

Maritime executives and golf enthusiasts took to the greens in support of maritime education at the Balanghay Golf Tournament in Southlinks Golf Club, Las Pinas last September 17, 2015. The golf tournament was organized by volunteers of maritime party-list ANGKLA to foster positive awareness on Project Balanghay, the Maritime Senior High School program initiated by the Department of Education, ANGKLA and PTC, and raise funds for the continuous support of its implementation. Aside from the exciting golf action and raffle draws, guests were treated to an inspiring interpretive dance number from students of

the Muntinlupa National Science High School (MNHS), one of the early implementers of the Maritime Senior High School program along with Gil Montilla National High School (GMNHS) in Negros Occidental and Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro. Future seafarers from GMNHS and Capitol University are marching their way to graduation this March 2016, while MNHS which started offering the program this year will see its first batch of graduates by 2017.

PTC joined the rest of the Philippine maritime industry in celebrating the 2015 National Maritime Week last September 20 to 27. Hosted by the Philippine Coast Guard, this year’s celebration focused on maritime education and training with the theme “Edukasyon at Pagsasanay sa Maritima: Kabalikat sa Patuloy na Kaunlaran” (Maritime Education and Training: Key Towards Continuous Economic Progress).

ANGKLA's Vice-Chairman Capt. Ronald Enrile received the Certificate of Appreciation from Philippine Association of Maritime Training Center Inc. (PAMTCI) President C/E Alfredo G.Haboc during the Maritime Forum (The Philippine MET and Certification: STCW Compliance and Beyond) on September 24, 2015. Capt. Enrile addressed the members of the Association of Philippine Maritime Institutions (PAMI) and PAMTCI at the AMOSUP Convention Hall with updates on the legislative measures that ANGKLA has successfully put into place over the last two and a half years. PAMTCI President C/E Alfredo G. Haboc discussed further the plan to make the Enhanced Support Level Program (ESLP) a Key +12 equivalent.

On September 25, PTC Chief Commercial Officer Mr. Edgar Milla, representing PTC CEO Gerardo Borromeo, discussed the impact of the ASEAN integration on Philippine maritime manpower at the PHIL-MET Council Maritime Forum with the theme “Maritime Industry: Driver of Philippine Economic Progress” held at St. Therese MTC College in Iloilo. Employees of the Iloilo branch of PTC and PHILCAMSAT also participated in a maritime parade organized by the Philippine Coast Guard District Western Visayas. In Metro Manila, PTC joined the National Seafarers’ Day Grand Parade hosted by the Apostleship

of the Sea held on September 27 at Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City. While in Cebu, Capt. Ronald Enrile spoke to future global maritime professionals during the opening of ANGKLA’s “Anchor to Excellence Maritime Quiz Bee” on September 28, inspiring the students to dream big in the pursuit of their education and to aim to become not just future officers onboard, but ship owners, as well.

The Board of Trustees of the Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL) were inducted into office last August 12, 2015, in the presence of Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya as inducting officer. The ceremony was held at the DOTC office and was witnessed by Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Administrator Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr. and Atty. Josephine Uranza, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Regional Co-ordinator for East Asia.

During the recently held National Maritime Week, WIMAPHIL, along with the IMO and MARINA, sponsored a WIMA Asia Conference in Manila from September 21 - 25, 2015. The conference, anchored on the theme “Mind the Gap: Women’s Advocacy on the Domestic Ferry Safety,” gathered women representatives from all over Asia to promote safety on board domestic vessels. Female cadets from the MAPUA-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET) were active participants in the said conference.

Nego Noche Buena Cooking DemoPTC’s Family and Crew Relations recently held a “Nego Noche Buena Cooking Demo” for the company’s global maritime professionals and their families last August 29, 2015 at the PHILCAMSAT Culinary and Hospitality Theater in Makati. Attendees were given hands-on training on the preparation of delicious holiday-themed dishes, courtesy of PHILCAMSAT Culinary Instructor Chef Romeo Agawin II, and perfect for starting their own home-based food business for the coming Christmas season. The session ended with a sampling of the day’s scrumptious culinary creations to the delight of everyone in attendance.

Future GMPs Engage in Battle of Wits at First Maritime Quiz BeeThe best and the brightest future global maritime professionals gathered at “Anchor for Excellence,” the first-ever maritime quiz bee in Cebu and Central Visayas. The quiz bee, organized and sponsored by PTC, is an initiative of maritime party-list ANGKLA and aims to strengthen Philippine maritime education by fostering academic excellence and leadership between maritime students, as well as, to promote the seafaring profession among the country’s youth. More than 1,500 students participated in the elimination rounds of the quiz bee held on September 28 to 29 at the following maritime schools: the University of Visayas, University of Cebu (Mambaling), University of Cebu (Lapu-Lapu-Mandaue), Seacrest Maritime Foundation Inc., and Salazar Colleges of Science and Technology.

The winning students from the elimination round will compete in the finals on October 8, 2015 at the Mariners Court at Pier 1 in Cebu, where they will vie for cash prizes, trophies and scholarships from PHILCAMSAT and other reputable review and training centers nationwide. Six winners will also be chosen to be part of a specialized cadetship training program at PTC and other maritime companies.

M/V Astrea Delivered to HydroussaP T C c o n g r a t u l a t e s Hydroussa Navigation Ltd. on the delivery of its latest vessel, the 81,838 MT dwt bulk carrier M/V Astrea, last September 2, 2015 at the Tsuneishi Heavy Industries shipyard in Balamban, Cebu. The addition of M/V Astrea brings Hydroussa’s fleet size to a total of 9

modern bulk carriers, all manned exclusively by PTC global maritime professionals. The company has an active new building program and is continuously looking into new technologies and future expansion.

At the height of typhoon “Egay” last July 7, the MV Crimson Polaris, a bulk carrier (wood chip) vessel under Lighthouse Shipmanagement (LHSM) and manned by 20 PTC officers and crew, came to the aid of the nine Filipino fishermen off the coast of Lingayen Gulf. MV Crimson Polaris is owned by Doun Kisen Co. Ltd. and chartered by NYK Line. According to LTSG Alexander Corpuz, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard station at Sual, Pangasinan, the fishermen left Barangay Arnedo in Bolinao on July 2 to fish 185 kilometers from shore. As they were sailing back to shore three days later, huge waves brought about by Tropical Storm “Egay” destroyed one of the boat’s outriggers. Under the command of PTC Capt. Venancio De La Cruz, the fishermen were pulled to safety and first aid was immediately applied to them on board. Eight of them suffered minor injuries - open wounds

and lacerations - due to long exposure to seawater, while one complained of weakness caused by dehydration. The fishermen were endorsed to the Philippine Coast Guard on the following day and were taken to the District Hospital in Alaminos City before they safely returned home to their families. PTC Chief Executive Officer Gerardo Borromeo congratulated Capt. De La Cruz and his crew on the exceptional seamanship and courage they exhibited at the height of the typhoon. “Their timely intervention helped save nine lives. This will serve as a continuing inspiration to all of us on the role of our maritime professionals at sea and the importance of reaching out to those in danger.”

Nego Noche Buena Cooking DemoPTC’s Family and Crew Relations recently held a “Nego Noche Buena Cooking Demo” for the company’s global maritime professionals and their families last August 29, 2015 at the PHILCAMSAT Culinary and Hospitality Theater in Makati. Attendees were given hands-on training on the preparation of delicious holiday-themed dishes, courtesy of PHILCAMSAT Culinary Instructor Chef Romeo Agawin II, and perfect for starting their own home-based food business for the coming Christmas season. The session ended with a sampling of the day’s scrumptious culinary creations to the delight of everyone in attendance.

Future GMPs Engage in Battle of Wits at First Maritime Quiz BeeThe best and the brightest future global maritime professionals gathered at “Anchor for Excellence,” the first-ever maritime quiz bee in Cebu and Central Visayas. The quiz bee, organized and sponsored by PTC, is an initiative of maritime party-list ANGKLA and aims to strengthen Philippine maritime education by fostering academic excellence and leadership between maritime students, as well as, to promote the seafaring profession among the country’s youth. More than 1,500 students participated in the elimination rounds of the quiz bee held on September 28 to 29 at the following maritime schools: the University of Visayas, University of Cebu (Mambaling), University of Cebu (Lapu-Lapu-Mandaue), Seacrest Maritime Foundation Inc., and Salazar Colleges of Science and Technology.

The winning students from the elimination round will compete in the finals on October 8, 2015 at the Mariners Court at Pier 1 in Cebu, where they will vie for cash prizes, trophies and scholarships from PHILCAMSAT and other reputable review and training centers nationwide. Six winners will also be chosen to be part of a specialized cadetship training program at PTC and other maritime companies.

Wallenius Donates New Kinder Classroom through PTC-CSJ PTC Joins Metro-wide Shake DrillThe PTC-CSJ Foundation recently turned over a new Kinder Classroom/Library, sponsored by Wallenius Marine, to the foundation’s 3G partner-school, Lakeview Elementary School (LES) in Muntinlupa City. The Kinder Classroom/Library in LES is the second classroom donation of Wallenius through the PTC-CSJ

Foundation, covering the construction of the Kinder Classroom/Library furnished with furniture, books, school materials and supplies, as well as, the training of LES’ Kinder teachers on the academic curriculum. The project was done in partnership with the AGAPP Foundation’s “Silid Pangarap” project which is engaged in the construction and development of pre-school classrooms/libraries in public schools designated by the Department of Education in depressed and disadvantaged communities. The turnover ceremony was attended by PTC-CSJ Trustees Gerardo Borromeo and Christina Manzano and Executive Director, Flory Tabio, Jaja De Perio of PTC, AGAPP Chairperson Pinky Aquino-Abellada, Muntinlupa City Administrator Engr. Allan Cachuela and LES Principal Mrs. Buena dela Cruz. The new classroom is now being used by four kinder classes of about 130 pupils each.

For 45 seconds, participants performed the Drop, Cover, and Hold exercise and carefully implemented the company’s disaster evacuation plan. More than 6.5 million individuals participated in the massive exercise which aimed to promote a culture of disaster and emergency preparedness among Metro Manila citizens.

Team PTC Scores Big at FAME Sporting EventsLast May 14, 2015, PTC golfers teed off at the 11th FAME Golf Invitational Tournament held at the Palmer Course of Orchard Golf & Country Club in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, along with more than 80 other representatives of crew management companies, maritime associations and marine golf clubs. The Over-All Champions were PTC’s Capt.

Honorio Casalme and teammate Mr. Jones Tulod of TSM Shipping (Phils.), Inc. who finished with the highest scores to win the Low Net and Low Gross awards, respectively. The“Philippine Team” composed of Capt. Casalme, along with Mr. Jones Tulod and Capt. Banny Briones of Multinational Maritime, Inc., were declared Champions for the FAME Ryder Cup. This is the fourth consecutive year that the team has been given this award.

Meanwhile, PTC employees and GMPs demonstrated their badminton prowess at the 10th FAME Inter-Manning Badminton Tournament on August 8 at the PowerSmash Badminton Court in Pasong Tamo, Makati. Intense and exciting match-up games highlighted the annual event which aims to promote camaraderie and sportsmanship among the tournament’s 392 players coming from a total of 35 crew management companies. Jervy Espiritu and Miguelito Plaza of PTC’s Crewing - Passenger Division emerged as champions for the Men's Level A category while Heidi Sanchez of FMSS with partner Josephine Sace, a family member of a PTC GMP, won the Women's Level B category. For the Men's level H category, the team of Capt. Elias Parreno, PTC Crewing Manager for Komaya Shipping, and Aldin Tano, PTC GMP, was named First Runner-Up. Most recently, the PTC Running Club organized a contingent of runners for “Go Marino Go! Healthy Body, Healthy Mind,” the 9th FAME Fun Run held last September 20, 2015 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City. Held in celebration of World Maritime Day, the fun run drew more than 4,000 participants who competed in 3K, 5K and 10K races. Mrs. Josephine Parco, wife of PTC Executive Director Mark Parco, finished second in the 5K race.
