NATIONAL MUSEUM FOR ART, ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
VESTBANEN, OSLO (NORWAY) COMPETITION 2009
In seeking to create a relevant, contemporary and inspiring complex that resonates
with its specific time and place as well as with the histories and cultures of its users, our
design proposal has sifted through the urban layers of this unique Nordic city in the
search for a solution that complements, echoes and extends the existing landscape.
Siphoning cues and references from Oslo’s history, particularly its relationship to the sea,
we attempted to seek out those elements which serve as universally applicable infor-
mants for the organisation of both conceptual and architectonic space.
From the outset the intention has been to cultivate a collective, open ethos to the
scheme, while still allowing for the programmatic and functional needs of the diverse
fields represented in the Museum. In creating such an open, intuitively navigated and
stimulating environment we hope to subvert the often guarded and traditional bounda-
ries of the art world and encourage the public’s curiosities. The Museum is designed to
embody and manifest a broadly democratic, enlightened, inspiring and integrated
vision of the institutions and activities which it is to house.

COMPETITION FOR THE THEMATIC PAVILION OF EXPO 2012
From the outset, the design intention has been to deliver a proposal that experientially and
referentially, both in form and function, belongs to the Sea. The Pavilion is conceived of as a
promenade, a projected threshold between man and sea, morphed from a strict coastline,
whereby the destination is the Ocean itself. The ‘Pavilion’ becomes an element in the jour-
ney across the Ocean, an element within which the theatrics of marine life are explained.
Anchored to the coast, the Bridge acts as a filter within which we can simultaneously ex-
perience the scale and contrast of two diverse conditions, those of the controlled basin and
the untamed ocean. The Bridge landscape sits on the cusp between the natural, with its
pantheon of memories and stories, and the artificial, with its potentials and promises, offer-
ing the public the opportunity to both reflect and to learn.

This competition gives the opportunity to express the role of a new cultural facility in histori-
cal centres, balanced between the urban existing language and rules and the need to
express a new identity. The role of a museum as a contemporary sign that can help people
to recognize their belonging to their epoch, is a theme of discussion that recalls the dis-
putes of the Académie française of the past centuries. The proposal foresees a compact
volume clad with natural stone and set as a boulder raising from the ground and cut on the
city level to get the people inside it. Due to the huge program almost half of the functions
are underground. The idea is to build an internal shell that can offer flexibility and, at the
same time, a unique experience. This is the reason why the indoor spaces are designed on
a regular geometry. The exhibitions will then outline the ethnographical trip throughout
history. According to their needs the curators will use the building as a metaphor of a loose
boulder shaped from ancient flows of water and rising up within the urban structure of the
city of Geneva.

ART FUND PAVILION COMPETITION
An emotional space for the intimacy of presenting, gathering or exhibiting.
A warm shell to share personal feelings or enjoy them in solitude.
The dichotomy of an introverted and extroverted space/structure, expressed through a
simple geometry that reveals itself at first glance but never ends to surprise ones percep-
tions. The strength and the smoothness of an archaic and an anthropomorphic shape clad
in shingles is to be used as a note book by people for drawing/writing messages, wishes,
prayers, to indicate their physical presence. When writing a note, you are confonted by a
reflected and fragmented image of yourself.

The site express an extraordinary challenge to interact geographically as well as symboli-
cally with the existing nature and the important prehistoric elements. The new museum
becomes part of the landscape being itself the link between the two main levels of the
prehistoric park.In fact it is built as a double spiral accessible inside (Museum) and outside
on its roof (promenade). The Spiral construction allow to solve as synthesis the different crite-
ria demanded by Gyeonggi Provincial Government. The new Museum becomes so as well
a discovery-walkway through natural history. The spiral shape reminds to a fossil as well as a
coring excavated on the ground. On the hill side (precipice) the circular wall of the new
construction are directly excavated in the basalt and shown as part of the exhibition expe-
rience. The idea of the never ending screw or “infinite Museum” allows at least three visiting
ways. Each of them give the visitor a different perception of the exhibition: quick look, de-
ep involvement and pass by to the outdoor archeological excavations in the park.

The chance to work with the visual artist MTH and display her work was given by the art
dealer Marinotti who promoted the exhibition and the idea of designing the “hardware” of
the installations beside the exhibition layout and mise en scène over the 1200m2 space at
the migros museum. The idea of the space was to share the visit into two different experien-
ces through two ways: one with the installations and one as architectural promenade
through abstract volume as a kind of physical installation and meditation moment on the
side of the visual art experience. The exhibit starts going through a filter of 3mt high block
letters TRAGEDY that introduces the dark space of the video installation ending with the
3/3/3 aluminium cube of the “for a better world” installation. At the end of the video spa-
ces the second space has been left enlighten from the natural light through the big ope-
nings of the industrial space. This space host the last installation of the artist: the sacrifice on
an altar of herself.

Among the historical treasures in Italy, for sure the small historical towns are precious
milestones. The historical centre of Vimercate (Milano suburban area) is marked by
interesting and beautiful ancient buildings as well as historical parks. Set at the northern
corner of the “central park” this new volume belongs to the reconversion of an ancient
villa (XIX cent.) into a cultural complex related to the university. Being a volume set
inside the massive belt of the park we opted to keep it transparent as a kind of filter to
bring the people into the park. The steel structure is filled with glass and has a curtain of
brises-soleil in terracotta modelled in a light prismatic shape that recalls the materials
as well as the shake of the traditional buildings of the region.

A town campus for the new università of Lugano composed of just four buildings that aim
to create an intimate place where to study. Our proposal wish to set a permeable structure
that allows the flow of the students through the buildings as a kind of continuation of the
patways of the green area. The tall building containing the conference hall and the
cantine overpass in height the existing neoclassical building to witness the presence of the
new cultural identity and raising up to an height that allows the view on the lake on the
southern part as well as to expose the new spaces to the sunlight.

Casasco offers an extraordinary natural landscape with a spectacular view to Como Lake.
The project stresses the relation between man and nature with a primary geometry set at
the edge of the ancient village of Casasco as a kind of bastion but without a direction. The
elliptical shape opens the interior spaces towards the surrounding landscape in all direc-
tions. The new volume does not set itself as a limit but as a point, a centre that becomes
through the courtyard a refuge for the guests of the clinic. The rounded shaped elevations
leave the light flow on the skin of the building avoiding strong shadowed sides, giving a soft
appearance to the volume.
