To Our Viewers, Members, Partners and Supporters:

Welcome to our 2012 Report to the Community.

2012 has certainly been a year of decisions, often contentious as we faced national elections, at times inspiring as we saw communities coming together as they faced natural disasters. It was a year of resiliency as we continued an economic recovery. Local and national institutions all have a role in improving the wellbeing of our communities. As public broadcasting institutions, Public Media Connect/CET & ThinkTV is among them.

How we communicate about the issues we face together, the culture we share and the education we need is fundamental to our future. It is this belief that lies at the heart of the mission of CET and ThinkTV. To enlighten, educate, inform and engage with the remarkable communication technologies of our time presents opportunity and imposes responsibility.

For many years the national Roper Public Affairs and Media Survey has found that the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and its member stations, including CET and ThinkTV, are the most trusted institutions in the country. More Americans trust public television for news and public affairs programming than from any other source. More parents trust public television for programming for their children than from any other service. More teachers trust public television for educational media than from any other provider.

Trust is a value built over time. This past year, we hope that CET and ThinkTV have continued to earn your trust as a viewer, as a parent, as a teacher or learner, not only because of the quality of the content we provide, but because of our relationship with you and our community. These are, after all, your local public media organizations. We rely on community-wide partnerships to make our services effective — and on your support to make them possible.

As we look to the future, it is community partnerships and your support that allows us to tell local stories, inform one another about issues we face, celebrate the talents among us and provide educational resources for our children. All of this is possible as we explore the technology to connect to you, to our community and to the broader world.

Thank you.

All the best,

connecting to youIn 2012 , Public Media Connect continued to be the most widely used non-profit service throughout our region.

90% of all the television households in our local communities turned to our broadcast stations during the past year. Each month, these stations reach a cumulative audience of 2 million people.

PMC is the communities’ largest classroom for young learners. Four out of every five children ages 2-8 watch our stations during the year.

PMC is the most accessible stage for the arts and cultural performances. CET Arts, the first local 24-hour service of its kind in the nation, features local, regional and world performance programming.

This year, public television and PMC remained the most trusted source for public affairs and information programming with a commitment to journalism and balance that informs rather than incites.

Public Media Connect (PMC), the innovative regional non-profit organization formed by CET and ThinkTV in 2009, serves the more than 3 million people in the Greater Cincinnati and Dayton communities. At the heart of PMC’s mission is a commitment to the needs, interests, education and future of our region.

connecting to our community

CET and ThinkTV are educational, cultural and informational institutions with a unique capability to reach audiences and learners every day. Above all, we are local institutions. As presenters, producers and distributors of distinctive content to our region, PMC also strives to celebrate the talents among us, to tell stories close to home, and to respond to the educational needs and issues we face together.

Over the last 3 years

PMC and its staff have

received 24 regional

Emmy® Nominations

and 7 Emmy Awards for

local productions.

Public Media Connect continues its commitment to quality local programs for broadcast, non-broadcast and online

distribution. CET Arts, Public Media Connect’s local 24-hour cultural program service ensures that the arts are available

for everyone; SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar spotlights the greater Cincinnati arts and cultural community;

Our Ohio continues its journey throughout the Buckeye state; Focus, highlights our community issues and affairs and our community productions such as the Cincinnati Symphony’s

“Preludes”; Stivers School for the Arts and the Cincinnati Boy Choir showcase the local talents among us.

PMC is engaged in our community through the participation of community partners. This year, we were selected as one of only 20 public broadcasting organizations to represent

a national American Graduate initiative helping to build community awareness of our nation’s “dropout crisis”.

These efforts span from pre-school through high school and involved producing specialized programming and working

in the field with community partners.

PMC education efforts were recognized by the National Educational Telecommunications Association for the

production of a STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) multi-media resource developed

for our schools.

PMC’s connection to the educational community is fundamental to our purpose. ThinkTV and CET reached

more than 3,000 childcare providers and parents through workshops on topics ranging from literacy to kindergarten

readiness, dental health and asthma therapy.

CET and ThinkTV have served their communities for more than 5 decades as educational and public television organizations. With our community’s support, PMC invests in a wide range of award-winning national programming, including the signature PBS series.

connecting to your World

In 2012 PMC presented a wide-range of national programming including the signature PBS series. Award-winning, critically acclaimed series like Masterpiece’s “Downton Abbey”; Ken Burns and his landmark series: Prohibition. The PBS Fall Arts Festival, NOVA, Nature and Frontline among them.

In Fall 2012, PBS prepared for its unmatched coverage of the

national elections. And was the only broadcast service to cover

the national Republican and Democratic conventions

in primetime.

This year, PMC online services remained an indispensable destination for educators, parents and child care providers. Our sister websites,CETconnect.org and thinktv.org allow visitors to experience the best of public media through a video on demand service 24 hours a day.

PMC partnered with NextAvenue.org to launch an online service for Baby Boomers providing tools and resources to navigate a new life stage.

Social media is booming and PMC is riding the wave, engaging our communities on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and YouTube.

at home with cet and thinktV

Throughout the year, you invite public television into your home as a viewer. Many times, we have the opportunity to invite you into our studios. In 2012, we hosted:

• Paula Apsell, Sr. Executive Producer of NOVA

• Michael Jones CCO of PBS

• Marsha Bemko Executive Producer of Antiques Roadshow

• Jennifer Lawson Sr. VP Content for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

PMC welcomed hundreds of volunteers and attendees to Speaking of Women’s Health®, Live on CET! and our Auctions and Membership campaigns. And we hosted many of you to special screenings and community gatherings.

Your viewership, your support and your trust in CET and ThinkTV are the true measures of our mission. Thank you to the individuals, foundations and corporate supporters whose generosity and belief in our mission has made all that we do possible in 2012.

The mission of Public Media Connect and its local non-profit organizations, CET and ThinkTV, is to strengthen the communities we serve through programs and services that inspire and inform, educate and engage, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning and the power of diverse perspectives.

Locally, Public Media Connect/CET & ThinkTV relies on a unique public-private partnership to fund our educational and public service mission. PMC’s programming and learning services are available to everyone is our diverse community. While limited governmental support provides critical “seed funding” for our stations, voluntary community support remains the most important contributor to our organization’s financial health and capability. Our local services and development efforts raise almost 75% of PMC’s annual funding.
