The biggest way to make sure a magazine is successful is to make a magazine that the public is going to read. I've chosen the most popular music genres I could think of and put them in the questionnaire. The rock and Indie genres were the most popular with the public.

What is your favourite music genre?

As I wanted to create a successful music magazine, I needed the public’s opinion on what was their magazine of choice. Out of the six different magazines to choose from, Kerrang! And Q were the most popular magazines chosen.

Magazine Masthead's of public choice

Rock Awn!

Helter Skelter

Turntable

Rocker

Every Magazine needs a masthead, the following four masthead ideas I had produced were all in contention for being chosen as my final masthead for my magazine. Having originally chosen the masthead “Rock Awn!” as my preferred masthead, I needed the members of my target audience (16-15 year olds) to decide what masthead they would have preferred. Helter Skelter was the most popular masthead chosen.

What masthead would you prefer for a music magazine?

How willing the public were willing to pay for a typical monthly music magazine.

£2 or less

£2-£3

£3-£4

£4 or more

The main issue for modern day magazines in general is how much should they charge for a magazine (monthly) ? In modern society, the magazine industry is under pressure to lower prices as social networking is threatening the magazine industry with information people can access for free. The most popular price was the £3-£4 price bracket.

How much are you willing to pay for a monthly magazine?

The public's view on free merchandise.

Yes

No

Another issue magazines have is that, would they need to need to give away free gifts for more sales? Its a question I also wanted to put in my questionnaire. Its quite clear that the public would be more interested in a magazine if they were given free merchandise.

Would you be more likely to buy a magazine if there was free items with it?
