The HBCU-LEEA hosted it’s 16th Annual Training Conference in Washington, DC at Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia. This year’s theme was “Campus Partnerships for the 21st Century.” The conference was held from July 20th through July 24th and included vendor presentations, exhibitors, university speakers and speakers of various government agencies. These groups came together from all over to provide a network of support for public safety and emergency preparedness initiatives. Also, it included information sharing regarding challenges and best practices. The conference ended with the host city’s night event “Spirit of Washington Cruise on the Potomac River.”

WELCOME MESSAGE from Brian K. Jordan, Chief of Police & Executive Director of Safety & Security. To the incoming freshmen, I want to welcome you to Howard University and to our returning students, welcome back. The men and women of the Howard University Department of Public Safety (DPS) look forward to an exciting school year. We feel that working together with HUSA and the entire student body will lead to a safer environment here at HU.
Our goal at DPS is to increase our outreach to the student population and develop new community engagement opportunities this school year. Some of the things planned for the school year is, to increase the enrollment in our RAVE wireless emergency notification system; develop intimate community meetings with students to learn the concerns and issues of students; hold Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) training for our female population; and hold safety fairs on campus to educate students and faculty on many of the safety options available on campus.
Hopefully, together we can make Howard the safest college campus in America. So I look forward to working with you all to accomplish this goal.
