Labandilo Jr. Teachers are increasingly using and coping up with the technological advances nowadays particularly in the social media. They are creating Facebook accounts and many of them are actually members of various online groups in social media. One of the most popular online group of teachers in the Philippines is the DepEd Tambayan which has around 300,000 members most of which are active teachers while some of the members are retired teachers, administrators and parents. Various issues on a national scale or local experiences of teachers are being posted and shared in this group. One of the teachers posted about the issue on Zero Dropped Out Rate and Mass Promotion. It hits 4000 plus likes and there are almost 600 comments and still counting. The post is this: “ZERO DROPPED OUT RATE & MASS PROMOTION IS REALISTICALLY UNREALISTIC. Students must receive grades that they deserved! When I started teaching way back 2004 in a private school, we actually gave FAILED grades to some of our former students. Take note, my early years of teaching was at a Catholic School! Right after this, being afraid not to be promoted for the next school year, students immediately enrolled their failed subjects in summer classes. Nowadays, teachers are always blamed when their student failed. Do you honestly think this was the first option for teachers, to give grades of 74% or below? No! Why is it that teachers’ despite of employing various strategies, done remedial classes, home visitations, and other interventions, etc. yet a student failed? It is mainly because of student ABSENTEEISM & LACK OF PARENTAL GUIDANCE. The parents send their kids to the school they thought that their children are attending classes yet they are just playing computer games, cutting classes with their barkada, etc. Therefore, lack of parent’s authority & supervision seems an interrelated problem. Teachers usually informed parents about this problem. In fairness many of the parents tried everything for their children to attend school and nothing works. If even parents failed on this respect, why blame teachers? If teachers will pass a student who is absent for no valid reason during the whole grading period, then such student will just laugh at teachers! Pls. don’t blame teachers, we don’t only teach, we love and discipline our students! Well as usual, I am expecting many parents this 4th grading period to request for their children to be passed in my subject”. Since this issue is very relevant nationwide, teachers commented the following. Take note, the comments below are selected, only the best of which are included. PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS PERCEPTION AND EXPERIENCES ON ZERO DROPPED OUT RATE AND MASS PROMOTION BASED ON AN

ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA SURVEY By: Jose D.

The post is this:

“ZERO DROPPED OUT RATE & MASS PROMOTION IS REALISTICALLY UNREALISTIC.

Those who are in favour of the mass promotion and zero dropped out rate opined:

I would better give them that precious chance to prove themselves maybe not now but in the future. EDUCATION IS A LIFELONG PROCESS it may not be effective or suited for this young generations the concept of formal education to them na magpunta at mag-attend ng klase pero maaring mag-excel sya sa non-formal at mag grow din yan. Just let them feel they are worthy mas maganda kaysa ibilang silang walang silbi.

Zion Hill You fail them lalo sa elementary at high school public school student, then you

denied them their right to education... positive disciplining is of paramount consideration. Positive disciplining includes all aspect of the child including academic performance.... please consider reading about it. THE GREATEST TEACHER DOES NOT ENGAGE IN PRODUCING GENIUS STUDENTS BUT INSPIRING THEM TO LIVE TO THE FULLEST AND BE THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE.

pamahalaan ng education for all.

The above stated comments are all in favour of mass promotion and zero drop-out rate.

One of the commenter stated that education is a lifelong process while the other one stressed that the problem lies not on the child but it is on the too many clerical jobs given to teachers nowadays.

Maricon Garcia Malangen Tama po. Teachers have limitations also. Up to what extent should a teacher intervene? Shared responsibility po. Di lng po s teacher. Parents din and most of all ung student concerned po.

Analie Aquino "It takes two to tango", an adage goes. Home and school must collaborate

in order that the learner achieves what is expected of him. If only the teacher does the working, all his efforts will go in vain without the help and guidance of the parents. The problem lies when the parents don't care and put the blame on the teacher when their children fail. This is the fact of being a teacher.

Grace Mamon assert your authority to discipline; reprimand or scolding can never be

considered bullying, however it must be done in such a way that students understand it is for their own good , and it MUST be done to fulfill God's LOVE with firmness of correction, in that way, parents and students could never complain about your discipline.

Maricel Gocila Llanasas Lura No effective teachers for learner who is lack of interest

and self motivation to learn. Therefore, there is no significance that teachers must be blame for learner failed grades.

Bing Cercado Neri Relate much talaga ako sir... Mga studyante ngayon tinatanong teacher

bakit yan lang grade ko? Pag nagtuturo ang teacher hindi nakikinig... Walang notebook, maingay, pag activity gawa mangopya sa kagaya nila na walang alam ABSEENTEEISM AND THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENT TO REASON OUT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE PARA KAAWAAN AT PAGBIGYAN.

Gillian Malvas Trinidad Kasi nga daw, educatio is right of every filipino.. but how if that

pumasa, ung iba nmn ipapasa dahil sa mass promotion Junbert Pangasian In my seven years of teaching in elementary in public schools, I always

stand to my own discretion. Walang mkkpigil sa akin to give failing grades. I am the teacher, so it

is my duty to see the performance of my learners.

Rhoda Mae Terre Agaylan Tumpak na tumpak mam.. and expect more cases similar as

this next year because of those students who passed or promoted because of the so called Awa Barbara V. Laureano-Claridad n my opinion parang misinterpreted masyado eto. hidni

kaya mas left behind ang student kapag di mo naturuan ng maayos at na promote sya... i see some implications of this dogma. 1. happy sila kahit walang effort nway alam nila n NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND. 2.

Sabihin sa teacher.,what have you done to him/her?" Kapag pinasa ang grade kahit walang ginawa ang bata talagang tatawanan lng tayo...

Wilfredo Delos Santos Ang mga bata ngayon walang interes sa pag.aaral.. they dont value

free education... Griv Sirba Asoñeb May studyante akong hanggang ngayon, hirap mgbasa ng english

language..

Kalurkey

Normilet Angue Evangelista relate much. tapos tatanungin ka anong ginawa mo as

Amelia Funcion Perante Korek !!!!

National standard

Especially in Math and English Reading.

Laila Cagang Yes 100 percent correct absenteeism the root cause.

Kapag may

masamang mangyari sa teacher in the course of visitation sinong sasagot? pag mamalasin pa at namatay pa sinong bubuhay sa anak mo ng dahil sa visitation na yan

Shiela Aberin Gonzales It's a point where the DepEd should give focus to lessen the

clerical work of the teachers.

Zue Sagrado Point of view. Need to lessen the class size para mabigyan na panahon bawat

kabataan. Teachers through their comments testifies that they are divided on the issue, some are in

favour and some are not regarding the mass promotion and zero dropped out rate. Yet most of comments at least 95% of teachers are not in favour while around 5% are in favour on mass promotion and zero dropped out rate. The reason why ninety five percent are not in favour on mass promotion and zero dropped out rate is that many teachers can relate to the issue, they are quite compelled to pass even those undeserving learners many uttered the fact that teachers are always to blame when a learner failed; absenteeism among learners according to teachers is really an alarming problem; lack of parental guidance is another thing; and so on. Maybe it is about time that the Dep.Ed may look at this important issue once again. (Reference: DepEd Tambayan)
