metals prices rose Tuesday as ongo- ing unrest in the Middle East stoked fears of oil supply disruptions that could dampen economic growth.

Gold and silver prices rose as inves- tors parked their money in precious metals investments that are often used as hedges against political and economic instability. Precious met- als fell earlier this year as investors started moving money back in the stock market, but the unpredictable global situation has made them attrac- tive again.

"It's a haven," said George Gero, senior vice president for RBC Wealth Management in New York "What's driv- ing them into gold are instability fears, politically and economically.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress Tuesday that a prolonged rise in oil prices would hurt the U.S. economy, although he said runaway inflation is LJnlikf?ly. Trad- ers also see a possible government shutdown looming in Washington as Congress and President Obama dis- agree on budget issues.

Taken tvgether, metals look like a better investment than stocks or even the dollar, Gero said. The demand for safety should keep gold prices between $1,400 and $1,450 an ounce for the near future, he said.

Gold for Aoril deliverv rose $21.30

delivery rose 60.7 cents to settle at $34.427 an ounce.

In other metals contracts, March copper added 1.25 cents to settle at $4.4905 a pound. June palladi- um gained $17 10 at $816 70 an ounce April platinum rose $35.90 to $1,845.10 an ounce.

Oil prices, meanwhile, climbed as Iran clamped down on anti-government protesters while Libyan protesters expanded their control over the coun- try Oil prices surged 13 percent last week, peaking above $100 per barrel.

In Iran, pro-reform groups have clashed with the government, as the country's political crisis escalated Iran exports about 2.5 million barrels of oil and natural gas liquids per day, about 3 percent of global demand.

Benchmark oil for April delivery rose $2.66 cents to settle at $99,68 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil gained 8.46 cents to settle at $2.0235 per gallon, gasoline rose 9.07 cents to settle at $2.9834 per gallon and natural gas lost 16 4 cents to settle at $3.873 per 1,000 CrJbiC feet.

Grains and beans were mixed, In May contracts, wheat fell 6.75 cents to settle at $8.1025 a bushel, corn gained 4.5 cents to settle at $7.35 a bushel and soybeans rose 10.5 cents

to settle at $1,431 Silver for May to settle at $13 7525 a bushel
