Principal’s report
REEC Excursions
Stage 1 and Kindergarten children enjoyed a fun
(although cold – and wet for Stage 1!) day out at the
Riverina Environmental Education Centre recently. Bush
walking, sensory walks, and even treasure hunting were
the order of the day! We are very fortunate to have this
wonderful facility available for our students to visit.
Other classes will have the opportunity to attend later
in the year.
Walk Safely to School
We had a fantastic turnout last Friday with children,
mums, dads, grandparents and even puppy dogs
joining our ‘walking bus.’ Not only was it a chance to
enjoy a lovely morning walk to school, but also a
chance to remind our students about the importance
of crossing roads safely.
Debating
Last Friday Mr Maxwell had the pleasure of taking our
team of debaters to Sturt Public School to compete in
the Premier’s Debating Challenge. This was the first
event for our team. They did a fantastic job, with the
convenors amazed that they had never competed
before – big things to come from this team I think!

Kids Matter
Our school is embarking on a whole school wellbeing
and positive mental health program called ‘Kids
Matter.’ All of our families received a survey to get
their perspective on how our school is going in this
area. Surveys are due back this Friday. We need your
feedback! Returning your survey will not only assist our
planning, but will place your family in the draw to win a
brand new scooter!

PSSA Cross Country
Best of luck to our team of 48 runners competing at
the Cootamundra District PSSA Cross Country on
Friday. We know they will give it their best effort.
Boys & Girls Soccer Triumph
Congratulations to both our girls and boys soccer
teams who won their Round 1 matches last
Wednesday against Junee Public. The girls fought hard
to maintain a nil-all draw by the end of the game. The
game went into overtime, with our girls still managing
to hold out Junee Public. Fortunately, on a corner-
count, the game was awarded to our girls.
The boys played with tremendous effort and team
work, managing to defeat Junee Public 4-2. Our teams
now go on to play against Young in a few weeks.

What’s happening in our school?
REEC Excursions
1/2W & 1/2D enjoyed a great (although very wet!!) day
out at the Riverina Environmental Education Centre.
They went searching for bush creatures and plants,
then took a closer look at them under microscopes.
Micah has his specimen ready to check out
Under logs was a great spot for Miah to find creatures
Now Miah & Tahlia get ready to take a closer look
Ruben has his eyes glued to the microscope
Blake is amazed by what he saw under his microscope!
Next it was KM and KW’s turn to visit the centre.
Luckily the rain had gone for their visit and they got to
enjoy a sensory blindfold walk, a creature treasure hunt
– and topped it off with a fun play at the Botanical
Gardens!
‘Look out! There’s a giant spider!” warns Jacob – but
Charlotte, Aleeya & Holly aren’t too worried.

Walk Safely to School Day
Sunshine, exercise and learning about safety – our walk
Safely to school Day was a big success. It is important
that our students remember safe road crossing at all
times – not just on one special day.
Part of our Walking bus arriving at school
Savanah showing her grandmother how to safely cross
Mrs Fitzgerald reminding our younger students to hold
an adult’s hand when crossing
Mrs McDevitt organised some delicious fruit platters for
our walkers. Our senior students were on hand to serve
it up.

Volcanic Eruptions!
Two weeks ago Mrs McDevitt’s class came to visit 5/6S
for buddies and we all made volcanoes. We created the
volcanoes out of plastic plates, cups and aluminium foil.
We put water and baking soda into the crater at the top,
then made a mixture using vinegar, red food dye and
washing detergent. We poured this into the crater
making it erupt! It erupts because baking soda is a base
and the vinegar is an acid. When they react together
they form a carbonic acid – that is why it fizzes and
erupts. The kinders were amazed to see it erupt!

FROM THE COUNSELLOR’S DESK…..
Bullying
As parents, it’s helpful to know the difference between
what is an opportunity to support the further
development of your child’s social and life skills and
when there is a need to seek immediate assistance
because you suspect your child is a victim of bullying.
Bullying is the selective, uninvited, intentional and
repetitive harassment of one person by another
person or group.
There are five kinds of bullying:
PHYSICAL:
e.g. hitting poking, tripping, pushing or damaging
someone’s belongings.
VERBAL:
e.g. name calling, insults, homophobic or racist
remarks and verbal abuse.
SOCIAL ( COVERT) BULLYING:
e.g. lying, spreading rumours, playing a nasty joke,
mimicking and deliberately excluding someone.
PSYCHOLOGICAL BULLYING:
e.g. threatening, manipulation and stalking
CYBERBULLYING:
e.g. using technology ( email, mobile phones, chat
rooms, social networking sites) to bully verbally,
socially or psychologically.
Bullying is not:
Mutual arguments and disagreements
Single episodes of social rejection or dislike
Single-episode acts of nastiness or spite
Random acts of aggression or intimidation.
These actions can cause great distress. However, they
do not fit the definition of bullying, and they're not
examples of bullying unless someone is deliberately
and repeatedly doing them.
What to do if you suspect your child is being
bullied?
Look for warning signs. These may include reluctance
to go to school, feigned illness, headaches and
evidence of injury.
If you suspect your child is being bullied, take him/ her
seriously.
Avoid over-reacting and stress… things can be done to
help address the concerns.
Get a clear picture from your child of what is
happening. Listen to the whole story without
interrupting. Explain it’s normal to feel hurt. It’s never
ok to be bullied and it’s NOT their fault. Find out when,
where, who, how often, and who else saw it.
If appropriate, some suggestions can be made, such as
reporting to a teacher, avoiding certain areas or
playing near others that may offer support.
Give sensible advice. Don’t advise your child to fight
back. Don’t explain that the child didn’t mean it – they
did. Don’t tell them it will go away – it probably won’t.
Don’t let your child stay away from school – it won’t
solve the problem.
Inform the school. Present your concern to the
principal or teacher and explain that you are hoping to
find a solution to the problem with the school’s help.
Find out what you can do and what the school can do
to help resolve the situation This may include:
Your child learning assertive verbal and non-verbal
behaviours, rather than submissive or aggressive
behaviours;
Close monitoring by school staff;
Education of students at school on the nature of
bullying, the role that bystanders play in either
promoting or reducing bullying behaviours and
collective school community responsibility to address
bullying when it occurs;
Consideration of mediation between the students
involved;

Implementation of the School’s welfare and discipline
procedures.
You can assist your child develop lifelong skills by
encouraging them to be responsible for their own
behaviour and empowering them to develop solutions
to their problems. Please encourage and support your
child to seek help when necessary.
