Principal’s Message Berkeley Public School riding high again This week the finals of the Berkeley Community of School Public Speaking Competition was held at Illawarra Sports High School. The competition goes from strength to strength. The head adjudicator said in summation that the competition was of a very high standard, particularly the Stage 3 group. It was so pleasing to see our students do so well with 3 out of the 4 being placed first and receiving a trophy. Special thanks to the parents who coached their students, the class teachers and especially Barbara Clegg and Radha Koury for their efforts in preparing the students. A great team effort! Book Week I do hope everyone is working on their costume for the Book Week character parade. Come dressed as your favourite character next Thursday. All are welcome to watch the parade. This is always a great day at Berkeley Public School. Life Education At the end of the program the coordinating teacher came to me and said what a great school we have. The students were so respectful, and the staff were so welcoming. Sharon said it was a delight to be at the school and one of her best experiences she has had in a long while. P&C Thank you to the P&C who have approved the purchase of a large Italian patio style umbrella in shades of blue to cover the spiral seat near the 3-6 assembly area. We are very lucky to have such a hard-working group of parents supporting our school. They are now working on their next big fundraiser – a ‘Colour Run’ at the end of the term. This should be a fun day for our students and help raise some more funds for resources.

Kind regards Wayne Osborne Principal

Mobile Phones and Smart Watches

This week we have given Stage 3 students reminders about mobile phones in school. If your child needs to bring a mobile phone to school, they need to hand it in to the office in the morning and collect it after the bell at home time. We have reminded students that if they arrive before the office opens at 8:30am they need to keep their phones in their school bags and they are not to be used during this time.

We have also recently had a number of students wearing smart watches or apple watches to school. Although they cannot access the school Wifi code and may not have a data plan linked to the watch, other apps on the phone may not be appropriate for primary school. We have advised students to leave these watches at home.

Smaller watches that also track activity such as Fitbits and Garmin Vivofits are permitted.

WHAT DO WE ASK OF PARENTS WHILE ON SCHOOL GROUNDS?

Schools are protected by law, as inclosed lands, and as such a certain standard of behaviour is required of students, staff and parents while on site. We ask that:

1. Parents/Carers use appropriate language towards students, staff and other parents/carers. 2. Remain calm and refrain from aggressive, abusive, threatening and harassing behaviour. 3. Refrain from approaching students, other than your own child, over matters that may have occurred involving yourself

or your child as it is the school’s responsibility to do this. 4. Refrain from interrupting the learning environment of the classroom. 5. Collect your child promptly from school.

Failure to do so can result in the issuing of the ‘Inclosed Lands Act’ or the ‘Crimes Amendment Act’, both of which involve a ban on you entering the premises at any time and/or a heavy fine or sentence.

Dear Parent/Guardian RE: School Run4Fun Colour Explosion

We’re turning our event from bland to GRAND this year by adding an explosion of colour. The more money we raise the more we can provide for the students through vital school projects, in particular much needed school equipment.

The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion will be held on 27 September 2018 starting at 2.00pm on the back oval. We do ask that you bring a

spare change of clothes to school, most importantly a plain white shirt as the students will be covered in powder from head to toe. The

day’s focus is on fun and fitness with the added benefit of raising funds for our school.

Colour Powder

The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home of Holi Powder. It is made of high quality corn starch

and permitted food colours. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Toxicological Risk Assessment and

ingredient listings can be obtained from the School Office upon request. Students with asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to

participate.

How Does My Child Fundraise?

Students will receive a Sponsorship Form with instructions on how to raise money and order prizes on Monday. Students obtain donations

in cash using the Sponsorship Form together with online fundraising.

Students who raise as little as $10 or more will receive an incentive prize for their efforts. But why not aim higher? You have the option to

choose up to five (5) prizes and this will set your fundraising goal. Family and friends are your greatest supporters, so ask them first for

your support. You will reach your fundraising goal in no time.

Student Profile Page

Create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au which is unique to you. There are also some great features like recording

your sponsorships and selecting your prize goal.

You can also register for online fundraising. It’s the easiest way to help your child raise money and to reach your fundraising goal sooner.

The average raised per student using online fundraising is $120.

WIN A SHARE OF $70,000 WORTH OF FREE SPONSORSHIP DONATIONS. Create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au and

enter your unique code found on page five (5) of your Sponsorship Form to see if you’re an instant winner. Give your fundraising goal a kick

start!

How to Order Prizes?

To reward your child for their efforts, they will receive incentive prizes based on the total amount of sponsorship dollars raised in cash,

online, and if applicable, any FREE SPONSORSHIP DONATIONS won using the unique code on page five (5) of the Sponsorship Form. You

have two options to place your prize order:

1. Login or create a Student Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au. Once the fundraiser has finished, click the ‘ORDER MY PRIZE’

button and then confirm your total amount raised and order your prize/s, OR

2. Complete the back page of the Sponsorship Form and return to the school.

Please note, all donations need to be finalised on or before 28 September 2018. Student prizes will be delivered shortly after.

Thank you in advance for your participation, and get ready for a BLAST OF COLOUR! Happy fundraising!
