1 IntroductionThis document contains comprehensive instructions on using the Public Trust SSL VPN Service which is located here: https://vpn.pthome.co.nz. The Public Trust SSL VPN Service provides remote user access to internal Public Trust Desktops via the Internet. This enables users to access their desktops when they are at home or away from the office.

This Public Trust SSL VPN service replaces the old Remote Access service which was originally available on http://www.pthome.co.nz.

2 Security Overview“Remote access to the Public Trust IT environment is a privilege and not a right.”

This statement is contained within the Public Trust Information Security Policy document. It is expected that all users who have been granted the privilege to work remotely have read and understood the Public Trust Information Security Policy and in particular, the section on Remote Access.

2.1 Home VirusesAs part of the Remote Access Policy your home computer must be regularly scanned for viruses (recent and existing). If you currently don't have anti-virus/security software installed on your home computer, or don’t perform regular scans for viruses, you MAY NOT use the Public Trust SSL VPN.

2.2 Spyware RemovalNot all anti-virus suites can detect and remove spyware and malware. The following software suggestion is a specialist spyware/malware application (Note: There is a free version of this product):

SpyBot Search and Destroy

2.3 Learning and Understanding Computer SecurityUnderstanding computer security means making sense of technical terms and jargon which at the best of times can be confusing. We have compiled a small list of pages from an external web site (howstuffworks.com) to help explain common security terms:

How Computer Viruses Work

How Spyware Works

How Firewalls Work
