INTRODUCTION

Relationship between text and image

The first instance in which a relationship between image and text is addressed occurred in 1493, with the production of the illustrated book, called the Nuremberg Chronicle.

From this image-text relationship, a “new dimension” of design emerged where imagery and textwork together in order to enforce a particular meaning to the viewer. This became the basis for constructing a sense of “universal understanding” in the work that designers produce. This ideology developed during the period after the Industrial Revolution, when the need for universal interpretations among the masses became a necessity.

For the purposes of design, “meaning”will be defined as something “meant or intended” to evoke a feeling within the designer’s audience.

“Home Sweet Home” was one of the ex-isting messages that I have worked with.

I started out from searching for places which are not at all ‘sweet’ places to live to get a contrast with the phrase.

Places such as Syria or the Gaza where homes are bombed and people lost their place which they called ‘home’.

“Home Sweet Home” was one of the ex-isting messages that I have worked with.

For the phrase “Home Sweet Home” I choose to use an image of a destroyed house as a contrast to the phrase.

I chose to refer to the known ‘Home Sweet Home’ tiles and textile patterns. These tilesand textile patterns with “Home Sweet Home” consist usually a serif font for ‘Home’ in capitals as well as an ‘handwritten’ or curly font for the “Sweet” part. To refer even more to this I have put an border which refers to stitching.

The next step I took was taking the meaning of the message that I createdinto the ‘real’ world.

The message of the “Home Sweet Home” image which I created was that for some people, home is not sweet but bitter. Here were we are living in peace and wealthwe are busy creating our perfect homes. If we don’t allready have a perfect homewe’re creating super idealized interiors to make us as much feel home as possible. We even pretend to live at sea with creating a ‘beach look’ interior even though we are living in a flat.

I took an interior magazine Ariadne At Home (Payoff: Waar wonen genieten is/where living equals enjoying) and found an article which was called “At home with..”

Which is an article where someone shows off her perfect interior and house. And I decided to make a contrasting one and place it in the magazine as if it was meant to be there. This article is layout wise almost the same as the real one; ‘At Maren’ but the difference are the pictures, which are of de-stroyed interiors and houses instead of the perfect house of Maren in the real article. And in the introduction of ‘At Mohammed’ Mohammed tells about the bombing in Syria contrast to the happy life of Maren.

“Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s Maybelline” is an advertising payoff of Maybelline (L’Oreal) cosmetics.

Cosmetics are in some cases tested on animals. Unfortunately Maybelline is one of these companies who test on animals.

So I decided to find an image of an deformed or hurt animal which was tested on and question whether ‘she’ the animal, was born with it or whether it was due to Maybelline’s cosmetic testing.

MAYBE SHE’SBORN WITH IT

Drawn with make up

I experimented with making a protest poster which is drawn with make up. By drawing the poster out of make up I have added an extra meaning to the poster.

The tortured bunny

The problem with testing cosmetics on animals is that people are not being con-fronted with this fact when they are buying their make up. It’s too far away. So maybe being confronted in the shop with an im-age of a tortured rabbit would make them aware. Or a maybe a bloody eyeliner?

I read this demanding phrase on the cover of a womans magazine. The article was about turning your hobby into a career.

It made me think about that not everyone has the opportunity to have a choice in the work they do. Some people just work because they have to, some people find out they took a wrong careerpath and some people might have been pushed in a job that they hate. This can be in any career but prostitution is the most questionable. Did girls turn their hobby into a carreer or do they hate their job. Or is it ‘just a job’ like so much other jobs.

LOVE YOUR WORK!
