It has been a long time since I was commodore. The last time was 18 years ago so I may be a little rusty. The first thing I would like to do is thank our out going commodore, Todd Memmel, and past commodore, Lisa Dittmer. They did a fantastic job serving our club.

As I write this it is 6 degrees below zero outside, and yet boating season is right around the corner. The Milwaukee boat show is this month, and we need members to man our booth. It is a great way to meet new people and help recruit new members. So please sign up now. All volunteers get into the show for free. What a great opportunity to look for that next boat or accessory for the 2018 boating season!

As a final note I'm looking forward to our first meeting of the new year and a great boating season for all. Duane

Wisconsin Boating Club

Board Meeting at Memmel’s Home December 18, 2017

Todd and Katie Memmel hosted a casual dinner prior to this Board meeting, as a ‘thank you’ to all those who have served on the Board, and for all those who have committed to serve over the next year(s).

Board Members Present: Duane Delaney, Commodore; Jim Kaun, Vice Commodore; Todd Memmel, Past Commodore; Donna Danowski, Purser; Katie Memmel, Yeoperson; Travis Sarinske, Membership/Marketing; Dan Danowski, Legislative Liaison; Pete Zierden, Fleet Sheet Guests Present: Boyd and Lisa Dittmer, Jenny Freckmann, and Michelle Sarinske. Lisa Dittmer joined the meeting. MINUTES: Commodore, Duane Delaney, called our meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. He asked if there were any additions or corrections to the December Membership Meeting minutes, which were e-mailed to Board members. Jim Kaun made a motion to accept the minutes and Todd Memmel seconded. The motion carried. PURSER’S REPORT: Purser, Donna Danowski, reported that the club had a beginning balance of $4,040.86. We had income from membership dues and Christmas party attendance checks. We had expenses from new name tags, and engraving of the bell and “Boater of the Year” awards. Our ending balance was $4,884.45. Jim Kaun made a motion to accept the Purser’s report. Pete Zierden seconded. The motion carried. MEMBERSHIP and MARKETING: Travis Sarinske said that six people have signed up so far to work at our club booth at the Milwaukee Boat Show. We need more. The show’s dates are: January 19-21 and 24-28, 2018. We will meet to set up our booth on Thursday, January 18 at 4:00 p.m. Any who are interested will go for pizza afterwards. Take-down will be Sunday, January 28 in the late afternoon. Travis has 50 Buy one/Get one tickets if anyone is interested or has friends that would like to attend the show. Travis won’t be at our January meeting, so he will get all information to Duane. Todd Memmel said he would bring chairs for the booth. All club banners are accounted for. Travis said that our map of cruise destinations needs fixing. Todd said he’d do it. PROGRAMS: Todd Memmel reported that January’s meeting will be held on the 8th, since the first is New Year’s Day. The program will be a “Brown Bag Gift Exchange.” Bring something boating related or fun or ‘drinkable’ worth about $15.00 and we will have some fun. February’s program is unsure right now. Pete has consented to putting together a club movie for our March meeting. Anyone thinking about hosting a cruise this year should get their info to Todd soon so that he can display sheets at upcoming meetings, and allow members to sign up. CRUISE MANUALS AND ADVERTISING: Jim Kaun said that he will send out this year’s letters to potential advertisers. Donna mentioned that two advertisers from this year have still not paid. SAFETY: Boyd Dittmer and Russ Weber have volunteered to handle the Boat Inspection this year. Jim Kaun said he’d write up a report for the Fleet Sheet. // The recall on Kidde fire extinguishers was again discussed. We thought we could possibly make a hand-out regarding this, and give out at the Boat Show. GRIEVANCES: None FLEET SHEET: Pete Zierden asked that material be sent to him by Sunday, December 31st. LEGISLATIVE LIAISON: Dan Danowski reported that he found some articles, and he will give to Peter for Fleet Sheet publication. One is regarding a skimmer along the Milwaukee River that has picked up 1,545 yards of junk. It costs $139,082/year to maintain the vessel. He said that “Sea Ray” is for sale because sales have plummeted. Also, there is an ethanol study of how it affects global warming. The pipeline that runs through the straits of Mackinaw is now 64 years old, and beginning to cause concern. WEBSITE: Things seem fine. MARKETING: Travis has the invoice for the key chains, which were given to members at the Christmas party, and that will passed out at the Boat Show. He also spent $50 to link our club website with the Boat Show’s website. // We discussed how the club may want to advertise in the coming year – Lakeland Boating? Scuttlebutt? Or maybe we could do a video (or several videos) and put up on Youtube. Those on Social Media could share. // More effort will once again be concentrated on smaller types of boat cruises – dinghies, fishing boats, day cruises…

WISCONSIN BOATING CLUB Membership Meeting

December 9, 2017 at South Shore Yacht Club

The December Membership Meeting took place immediately before the annual Christmas party. No guests were present. Commodore, Todd Memmel, called the meeting to order at 5:17 p.m. Minutes Todd asked if there were any additions or corrections to the November Membership Meeting minutes. There were none. He asked for a motion to accept them as they appeared in the Fleet Sheet. Chris Vogds made the motion, and Lisa Dittmer seconded. The motion carried. Purser Donna Danowski reported that the club started the month with $3,800.86. We had income of $240.00 from dues, which were received via mail. The club had no expenses. Our ending balance is $4,040.86. Todd asked if there were any additions or corrections to the Purser’s Report, and there were none. He asked for a motion to accept the report. Lloyd Vogds made a motion, and Russ Weber seconded. The motion carried. Membership and Marketing Travis Sarinske reported that we have two new members. George and Sam Graubner said hello, and said they have had a boat for 15 or 20 years. They have a 34’ Martinique Wellcraft, which they slip at SSYC. We all welcomed the Graubners. // Travis passed out a sign-up sheet for members to work at the Boat Show. He also said he sent an e-mail so that people can sign up via “Doodle,” if they prefer, or call him on the phone. // Travis also explained that members will receive a free key chain/float for their boat keys. This gift is in honor of our club’s 60th year. The key chains will also be given out to people at the boat show who seem truly interested in joining. // Travis said that he had four guest passes for the boat show, and will get more. // He said that our club spent $50 to connect our website to the boat show ads. // As in years past, our club will enter the show through the rear door (S.E. corner) and receive name badges. Our booth will be in the same location as the past couple of years. Exact dates for the show are: January 19-21 and 24-28. Programs Lisa Dittmer reported that tonight’s program is, of course, the Christmas party. Todd then reported that January’s meeting will be on January 8, 2018, at the Brookfield Civic Center. The program will be a brown bag gift exchange. Couples or individuals should bring a $15.00 gift – maybe something boating related or a libation. There will be steals (and bribes.)

SUNSHINE: Lloyd and Chris Vogds’ younger daughter had a baby. Congratulations to their family. OLD BUSINESS: Donna inquired what happens when members have not yet paid their membership dues. A decision had been made last year that if dues aren’t paid in October, then a $5.00 late fee is due in November. If dues are still outstanding in December, there’s a $10.00 late fee. Todd will send an e-mail to anyone who is still outstanding. NEW BUSINESS: Todd Memmel received a letter from the Vice Commodore that the books have been audited, and that all is well. // If anyone has an idea for a social outing for the club in 2018, let’s discuss it. MISCELLANEOUS: Nothing miscellaneous. DATES TO REMEMBER:

- January 8 – Membership Meeting at BRF Civic Center 7:00 p.m. - January 18 – Set up for Boat Show 4:00 p.m. at State Fair Park - January 11-14 Chicago Boat Show - January 19-21 and 24-28 Milwaukee Boat Show - January 28 – Club takes down booth at boat show – late afternoon - February 5 – Membership Meeting at BRF Civic Center 7:00 p.m.

A motion was made by Todd Memmel that the meeting be adjourned. It was seconded by Dan Danowski. The meeting was adjourned at 8:58 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Katie Memmel

Cruise Manuals and Advertising Duane Delaney said there’s nothing new to report. Safety Jim Kaun reported that if you own a Kiddee fire extinguisher, either for your boat or home, and it has a plastic handle, there is a recall. Go to the Kiddee website, and there are directions as to how they will replace them. Be sure to let other boaters know about this offi-cial recall. Grievances None Fleet Sheet Pete Zierden was absent, but we figured information should be submitted to him by December 27th. Legislative Liaison Dan Danowski said he has some articles from the Journal Sentinel, but didn’t bring them tonight. He will bring them in January. // Dan said that he can get some galvanized cable for no charge – not sure of the size – but it’s strong enough for winches. He can also get some poly or hose, if anyone is interested, let him know. // Wayne Happel said that the LMYA had a meeting last month, and there will be four per year. The number of people present had been about 20, but now there are around 40 participating – sheriff, police, water patrol, private enterprise. They talked about river bridge repair. There is some concern about the rentals on the river, such as pontoons and kayaks, that they receive better information (such as going under the bridges). Should be better. // LMYA’s new commodore is Tom Dugan, Jim Mergener is the Purser, and Sally Mergener is Yeoperson. Website Ren Rodee was absent, but the website is running well. Sunshine I (Katie Memmel) reported that there were no actual cards sent, however, our son and his wife, Tony and Lesleigh, are safely home from their American Music Abroad tour to southeast Asia. Todd and I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for the kids as they traveled half-way around the world. Much appreciated. The trip was very much a success! Old Business Election of Officers. Past Commodore, Lisa Dittmer announced the new slate of officers for 2018/2019. Commodore, Duane Delaney; Vice Commodore, Jim Kaun; Past Commodore, Todd Memmel; There is no Senior Pilot; Yeoperson, Katie Memmel; Purser, Donna Danowski; Legislative Liaison, Dan Danowski; Membership and Marketing, Travis Sarinske; Fleet Sheet Editor, Pete Zierden. Boyd Dittmer and Russ Weber have volunteered to handle the Safety Inspection, which is usually the Senior Pilot’s main job. // Commodore, Todd Memmel read through the Election of Officers, and I (Katie Memmel) read the official slate of officers. Keith Ponath made a motion that the officers be accepted. Russ seconded, and the motion passed. Todd said that they would be taking their roles at the next Board Meet-ing. New Business Nothing new. Miscellaneous Nothing new. Dates to Remember December 18: Board Meeting at Memmel’s – 6:00 p.m. for casual dinner, meeting to follow January 8: Membership Meeting – 7:00 p.m. at Brookfield Civic Center / Brown Bag Gift Exchange January 11-14: Chicago Boat Show January 19-21 and 24-28: Milwaukee Boat Show Todd asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Points of interest

In 2017 the Milwaukee river Skimmer operated by the Veolia Water Milwaukee Co. removed 1,545 cubic yards of debris from the river.

Illustrated is a photo of the oil pipe lines running through Wisconsin and Upper & Lower Michigan. Line # 5 runs under Lake Michigan at the Mackinaw Straits. The line was put in in 1953 and there is now worry that it could leak after all these years. There is now debate as so whether to shut it down or do some much needed repairs to the line.

Pete went on his first cruise with Robin, a seasoned cruiser, and visited Eluthera island in the Bahamas, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel Mexico. At Grand Cayman they took a Boat to the “Sting Ray City” sand bar to walk with and feed the Stingrays. From there they went
