Vol. 3. Valter LangThe Bronze and Early Iron Ages in Estonia 2007. 298 p. ISBN 978-9949-11-726-0

This book analyses social, economic, and cultural processes during the Bronze and Early Iron Ages (18th century BC – 5th century AD) in what is today Estonia. The above period between the Stone Age (ca. 9000–1800 BC) and the Middle Iron Age (AD 450–800) was an era of signifi cant and crucial developmen-tal processes. The fi nal transi on from a foraging to a farming economy occurred during that me and resulted in an extensive se lement shi from suitable hun ng and fi shing places to ag-ricultural lands. In rela on to the above processes, the general se lement pa ern changed, and the agricultural household as the main se lement unit became prevalent. Social rela ons also changed, which contributed to the development of stra fi ed socie es, at fi rst mainly in coastal Estonia and later throughout con nental Estonia. Signifi cant developments took place both in material and intellectual culture. By the end of the period the Estonian areas had changed beyond recogni on compared to what they had been at the beginning of the period.

Vol. 4. Andres Tvauri The Migra on Period, Pre-Viking Age, and Viking Age in Estonia2012. 384 p. ISBN 978-9949-19-936-5

This book analyses the society, economy, se lement, and cul-ture of the territory of present-day Estonia in the period of ca AD 450–1050. This period is known in the Estonian archaeological chronology as the Migra on Period, the Pre-Viking Age, and the Viking Age. This was an era of rapid change, by the end of which tradi onal Estonian peasant culture as it is known un l the 19th century had developed. Whereas in Western Europe wri en sources from the second half of the fi rst millennium AD herald the arrival of the Middle Ages, there is an almost complete ab-sence of wri en informa on about the prevailing condi ons and events that took place in the area of present-day Estonia. There are only remains of the farms and fortresses of that me beneath the earth, as well as cemeteries, overgrown fi eld baulks and clearance cairns, and the large amount of excavated ancient objects or fragments thereof. Many aspects of prehistoric life cannot be researched because the source material is not extant

and there is no hope of fi nding it. Moreover, many phenomena of human life do not generate archaeological source material. Thus our overall understanding of the Estonian Middle Iron Age and the Viking Age is inevitably fragmentary and superfi cial.

Hämäläinen discusses the development of the nomenclature system (nomenklatura) of the Central Commi ee of the Esto nian Communist Party. The nomenclature was a list of key posi ons in the party and state bureaucracy, which served the purpose of consolida ng the party’s command and control over the whole society. Aldur Vunk Kuningamäng ärkamisaja koidikul 2012. 191 p. ISBN 978-9949-19-962-4. [In Estonian, with an English summary, The Game of Kings at the Dawn of the Awakening]

The allegoric framework and the tle of the book are borrowed from the card-game of serf peasants, recorded in 1818 by the Estophile pastor Johann Heinrich Rosenplänter. The role-play of this game refl ected the customs and habits of the class society, which was s ll in full bloom at the turn of the 18th–19th centu-ries. In the Game of Kings, the trump-cards for the peasant were his capabili es, but these were hindered during serfdom when there were no possibili es to act freely. The estate of the realm restricted the serf from obtaining be er educa on, a more well-paid occupa on, or property, necessary for the breakthrough. This book presents family histories, which started in the 18th century and peaked during the 19th century, and are clearly

framed with the restric ons, due to privileges and ins tu onal barriers, which the Bal c gentry managed to secure on occasion. The book juxtaposes the life stories of four men who were born in the Province of Livonia, at the me of the French Revolu on, and the narra ves of their direct predecessors.

underlying much of his novel thinking about language, literature and culture, his ‘unifi ed fi eld theory’ cri cism of literature. With a vision of renewal for the analysis of texts, Merilai’s two mono-graphs teach us to look deeper into the interplay between the referen al and auto-referen al dimensions of poe c produc on. The result is refreshing and cap va ng. — Thomas Salumets (University of Bri sh Columbia)

For more than 40 years, Jesper Hoff meyer has been commi ed to the idea of developing “a semio cs of nature, or biosemio cs as he chose to call this eff ort, that could intelligibly explain how all the phenomena of inherent meaning and signifi ca on in liv-ing nature – from the lowest level of sign processes in unicellular organisms to the cogni ve and social behavior of animals – can emerge from a universe that was not so organized and mean-ingful from the very beginning” (Claus Emmeche, Kalevi Kull, Frederik Stjernfelt (ed.), Reading Hoff meyer, rethinking biology, Tartu 2002, p. 41). In this volume, over 80 world-class scholars from more than 20 countries select a short quota on taken from any of Jesper Hoff meyer’s texts and provide their scholarly com-mentary upon that passage – whether in the form of an analy -cal explica on, a cri cal disagreement or a conceptual extension – that as they feel asks the ques ons that need to be asked, pro-poses the ideas that need to be proposed, or that draws out the

Vol. 11. Silver Ra asepp, Tyler Benne (ed.)Gatherings in Biosemio cs 2012. 244 p. ISBN 978-9949-32-048-6

The Gatherings in Biosemio cs is the fi rst and only regular series of worldwide conferences in semio c biology. The twel h and largest of the Gatherings took place in Tartu in the summer of 2012. This commemora ve volume includes new material on the basics of biosemio cs, as well as a complete history of the Gatherings as told by their organizers. In the fi rst part of the book, Approaches to Biosemio cs, fi ve scholars (Kalevi Kull, Ter-rence Deacon, Howard Pa ee, Stuart Kauff man, and Myrdene Anderson) describe their personal perspec ves on the history and func onality of biosemio cs. The second part, History of the Gatherings, includes retrospec ves on the gatherings, in-cluding the programmes of all these events. The third part fea-tures nearly the en re set of submi ed abstracts for the 2012 conference.

Vol. 12. Floyd MerrellMeaning Making: It’s what we do; it’s who we are (A transdisciplinary approach) December 2012

This is a book about fundamental ques ons of contemporary semio cs, however wri en in the style accessible to a wide range of readers. It sheds light on the following assump ons, largely following C. S. Peirce: (1) pre-linguis c sign modes of feel-ing, sensing and experiencing entail consciousness-becoming; (2) consciousness-becoming, culmina ng in linguis c signs, is always in the process of becoming something other than what it was becoming; and (3) linguis c signs are never complete and consistent, for they con nuously draw from pre-linguis c semi-o c processes. These processes involve signs incessantly becom-ing other signs in interdependent, interac ve interrelatedness. The three terms carry the implica on that all signs are comple-mentarily coalescent; they are always in the process of merging

BOOKS SEMIOTICS AND CULTURE THEORY

Page 12: Publications in humanities and social sciences

10

with one another. Illustra on of the complementary coalescent processual fl ow of signs involves split-second decision-making — examples are chiefl y from baseball and soccer — when one has no me consciously to think and then act on one’s thinking. Decisions must be made in the blink of an eye, and they must be spontaneously acted on. This rapid-fi re semio c transi on from pre-linguis c feeling-becoming to interpre ng-becoming emphasizes ongoing process, rather than rela vely fi xed prod-uct. Process is the principle key qualifying Peirce’s concept of semiosis.

Book series: Approaches to Culture TheoryApproaches to Culture Theory is a book series that focuses on var-ious aspects of analysis, modelling, and theore cal understanding of culture. Culture theory has a great role to play, not only as a set of complementary theories in the humani es and social sci-ences, but also as a self-descrip on of culture that forms a factor in the dynamics of culture and science. The series thus also aims to enhance methodological and theore cal standards in cultural research. We strive towards signifi cant improvement in both the self-understanding of disciplinary fi elds and in the comprehen-sion of general theore cal models by juxtaposing and comparing data, theories, and the methods of research in an interdisciplinary environment through crossdisciplinary coopera on.The series was launched in 2011 by the Centre of Excellence in Cultural Theory (CECT; European Regional Development Fund). CECT research groups cooperate to fi nd new, and combine estab-lished, approaches and themes in order to advance theore cal analysis of culture. The core group of CECT includes archaeology, human geography, ethnology, communica on and contemporary culture, folklore, religion studies, and semio cs.

Vol. 1. Tiina Peil (ed.)The Space of Culture – the Place of Nature in Estonia and Beyond2011. 191 p. ISBN 978-9949-19-623-4

This volume sets out to construct a tenta ve bridge between the physical and perceived (academic) worlds, between the under-standings of culture and nature, their spa ality and temporality by tackling the spa ality of culture phenomena across discipli-nary boundaries. The contribu ons are arranged around a gen-eral ques on of how humans organise the spaces in which they live. The book is divided according to three themes: the humani- es and ecosemio c approach to nature, construc ng nature,

and examining environmental and landscape change. The fi rst provides an historical review of the humani es and expands on the more theore cal themes. The second sec on discusses some ways in construc ng (wild) nature with specifi c examples. The fi nal one illustrates the changes that various cultures have brought about in the environment examining landscapes and domes ca on. The space of culture and the place of nature in various cultures are discussed cri cally throughout the volume in a way that challenges their ontological separa ons and invites to discuss culture-nature rela onships on a more balanced basis.

Vol. 4. Peeter ToropTõlge ja kultuur 2011. 231 p. ISBN 978-9949-19-620-3 [Transla on and Culture, in Estonian, with an English summary]

In this volume, Torop examines various issues connected with the interplay of culture and transla on. In the fourteen chapters, he deals with the analysability of culture as a research object, de-scribes the terminological fi eld associated with the no on of text in the context of cultural media on, and the existence of text in its diff erent transforma ons in an intertextual and intersemio c environment. He emphasizes the role that the technological de-velopment of cultural environment plays in the collabora on and interrela ons between various media. Theore cal analyses are accompanied by empirical examples from fi lm and drama texts. Torop also introduces a broad socio-cultural understanding of transla onal ac vity as a complex of economical, ideological and ethical problems of cultural genera on and media on. He further combines the transla onal view on culture with an interdiscipli-nary analysis of transla on, poin ng out the importance of inter-disciplinary methodology for the crea on of disciplinary iden ty for contemporary transla on studies. He also discusses the meth-odological value of history of transla on and demonstrates the metaphorical use of the no on of transla on in an ar s c inter-preta on of a historical experience, based on the analysis of some confl icts involving historical monuments. The last chapters focus on the dynamics of boundaries of source texts in various cases of translatability and on the use of semio cs as a tool for under-standing the nature of text, discuss transla on from the viewpoint of transla on studies’ disciplinary iden ty, demonstrate the rela- vity of the defi ni ons of transla on within various disciplines

and terminological fi elds, and emphasize the importance of con-solida ng this no on in order to achieve methodological coher-ence in transla on studies. Finally, he conceptualizes the rela ons between culture and transla on in the context of disciplinary dialogue within transla on studies and interdisciplinary dialogue between transla on studies and other disciplines, especially semi-o cs of transla on and semio cs of culture.

New book series: Poli cs and Society in the Bal c Sea Region

Call for submissions!Poli cs and Society in the Bal c Sea Region is a series devoted to contemporary social and poli cal issues in the countries sur-rounding the Bal c Sea. To this day, a considerable amount of research carried out in the social sciences especially at Bal c universi es remains largely unknown to the wider academic community due to either language or publishing constraints. Signifi cant analy cal fi ndings and relevant conceptual discus-sions about human and social development, socioeconomic challenges, media discourses or poli cal culture in the region do not get the broad interna onal a en on they deserve. The specifi c aim of the series is therefore to publish work especially by emerging scholars, who focus on current issues in the Bal c states and their specifi c regional and geopoli cal contexts and challenges. Open to a conceivably wide range of thema c, con-ceptual and methodological approaches, the Series seeks to become a forum for high-level social science scholarship that will signifi cantly enrich interna onal knowledge and understanding of the Bal c Sea region. The Series welcomes manuscripts in either English or German in all social science disciplines, including also economic and legal studies that demonstrate a clear regional focus, both in empirical and/or conceptual terms. Studies in history will be considered if they use social science methodology and clearly demonstrate the relevance of the par cular historical inquiry for our under-standing of contemporary poli cs/society.In order to ensure high quality and a broad readership, all manu-scripts are subjected to interna onal peer review. Published volumes will be made accessible through open access reposito-ries. If you are currently working on a book project or have just concluded a manuscript, please contact us. We would very much like to hear from you!

Indrek Tart (ed.)Basic human values in Estonia and Bal c Sea countries 2011. 171 p. ISBN 978-9949-19-853-5

The book focuses on revealing the signifi cance and peculiari- es of Estonia’s space of basic values and its division into two

large and dissimilar ethno-linguis c groups: Estonians and (mostly) Russian-speaking non-Estonians. There seems to be suffi cient jus fi ca on for making that dis nc on since separate languages (and even alphabets) along with diff ering cultural and psychological a tudes have resulted in quite dis nct processes of socializa on in the two groups. The approaches used in the volume are based on the theore cal work of Milton Rokeach and Shalom Schwartz.

Jaan RossKaksteist loengut muusikapsühholoogiast2007. 190 p. ISBN 978-9949-11-790-1 [Twelve lectures on the psychology of music, in Estonian]

This book contains a series of lectures on the psychology of music its author has delivered during a number of years to mostly undergraduate students at the University of Tartu and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn. The book is based on an underlying idea about the psychology of music as a rather broad discipline focusing on the rela onship between music itself on the one hand and extra-musical reality in its dif-ferent forms on the other. Twelve lectures in the book are rela- vely independent from each other. They deal with subjects like

musical abili es, emo ons and music, musical communica on, music and language, percep on of pitch and mbre, music and society, etc. An a empt has been made to avoid too narrow specialist jargon in discussing musical phenomena and, this way, to make contents of the book available also for students taking programs other than music in the fi eld of humani es and social sciences.

This book contains a number of texts on psychological issues that might be considered controversial and socially sensi ve, including the problems of intelligence, personality and “na onal character”, and specifi c topics from the history of psychology. Most of the texts have been published before, but have been revised for this edi on. Some texts have been wri en in coop-era on with other authors.
