IDEX was officially opened yesterday in a ceremony held under the patron-age of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and His High-ness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Guests awaiting the official open-ing were treated to displays from military bands and traditional danc-ers, as the flags of the 56 nations participating at IDEX were paraded. Following the arrival of the Royal Party and the playing of the UAE national anthem, the Presidential Regiment and Orchestra of Russia performed an impressive drill sequence as a prelude to the capability demonstration.

prised a breath-taking, all-action display that highlighted the capa-bilities of many branches of the UAE Armed Forces. The scenario involved a militia group attacking a humanitar-ian aid train and also hijacking a ship that was loaded with chemicals. At the same time a submarine threat was detected out at sea.

Responding immediately to the militia’s assaults, the UAE forces mounted attacks on militia forces from air, sea and land. Leclerc tanks and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles fired at militia positions, while NorthStar 407MRH and Apache helicopters pro-vided air cover. Special forces stormed the hijacked vessel from fast boats, while others arrived by Chinook to helo-cast into the creek before coming ashore. Mirage 2000 and F-16 fighters provided air support for the operation.

As the militia forces were over-whelmed by the UAE forces, specialist route-proving and CBRN vehicles were deployed to detect and negate IED threats, as well as to take samples to ensure that there was no chemical threat. But even as UAE forces took control of the situation, the submarine threat manifested itself. UAE Navy Panthers and a Super Puma arrived to counter the sub-marine, which was tracked by the Super Puma using its dipping sonar. As the submarine surfaced, its crew surrendered to UAE assault forces.

To bring the spectacle to a fitting finale, the MB339 aircraft of the UAE national aerobatic display team, Al Fursan, performed their trade-mark flypast streaming the national colours behind them as a salute to the UAE Armed Forces.

NIMR Automotive, a subsidiary of Emirates Defense Industries Company (EDIC, Stands 12-A05 and CP-219) has launched its Rapid Inter-ventional Vehicle (RIV). The RIV is a joint development between NIMR Automotive and MIRA (Motor Indus-try Research Association), which specialises in delivering automotive technology to the defence sector.

During the unveiling of the RIV, NIMR’s newest vehicle, NIMR chief executive Dr Fahad Saif Harhara said: “We have listened carefully to the special operations commu-nity and incorporated their combat experience into the design and devel-opment of this light and powerful 4x4 rapid intervention vehicle. The NIMR RIV is our most modern special forces platform available.”

The RIV has seats for four people, with the version on display being in

the left-hand drive configuration. It is powered by a 300hp diesel engine coupled to a fully automatic eight-speed transmission, which gives a

maximum speed of 160km/h and a range of 1,000km. The gross vehicle weight is being quoted as 4,000kg, of which 1,500kg is the payload.

is armed with a roof-mounted .50 machine gun (MG) and two pintle-mounted 5.56mm MGs. In addition to using its small size and mobility for its survivability, the NIMR RIV is equipped with underbody blast protection and a modular appliqué armour pack for ballistic protection.

As usual there are a number of options including a battery man-agement system, a central tyre inflation system, ride height con-trol, run inserts and a self-recovery winch. It can be carried underslung or inside a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter, which is widely used by special forces all over the world.

The NIMR RIV is seen as com-plementary to the Ajban (4x4) long-range special operations vehicle (LRSOV ), which was launched at IDEX two years ago and is already operational in the United Arab Emirates.

UK is here on businessWith about 100 companies exhib-iting at IDEX, the UK has one of the largest international presences at the show, writes David Donald. Heading the trade delegation is Minister for Defence Procurement Harriet Baldwin, who announced at the show that Welsh company Qioptiq had been awarded an £82 million contract for surveil-lance and targeting equipment for the UK Armed Forces.

The Minister is here to underline the strong bonds that exist between the UAE and the UK. British nationals account for 100,000 of the expatri-ates that live in the Emirates, and a further 1.5 million visit every year – many coming here to do business. At a government level, the two coun-tries are unique in spending at least 0.7 per cent of GNI on internationally recognised overseas development and humanitarian assistance at the

same time as at least 2 per cent of GDP on defence.

Bilateral trade is now approaching £13 billion, and the UK/UAE Business Council has targeted an increase to £25 billion by 2020. “IDEX is a key part of this goal,” said the Minister, “and I am here to help make the case for a dynamic, outward-looking Britain – a Britain that is recognised across the world as a leader in security, infra-structure protection and training.” With around £4 billion of exports, the UK is now the fifth largest exporter in the security sector.

Turkish missile specialist Roketsan continues to grow its portfolio of precision weapons and bring new options to the marketplace, as well as expand the number of plat-forms to which they can be applied. Recently the company announced that its 8km (5-mile) range Cirit laser-guided rocket is now available with a thermobaric warhead, adding to the multi-purpose (anti-armour, anti-personnel, incendiary) and high-explosive options.

Work also continues apace with a number of new Cirit applications. In the maritime domain, the weapon has been fired from fast patrol boats and corvettes, and continuing development is being undertaken in this arena. The Cirit has also been demonstrated in a number of land applications, both fixed and mobile. The system has been ordered by an undisclosed export customer in a towed land configuration.

In the air domain, Cirit has been operational for some time on the T-129 Atak and AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters of the Turkish armed forces, and with the Iomax Border Patrol Aircraft operated by the UAE. Additional integration work is now being undertaken in conjunction with MBDA Germany to clear Cirit for use with the Tiger attack heli-copter, while Roketsan has signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus Helicopters covering the integration of the weapon with the H135M and H145M light helicopters.

Turkish missiles move forward

A separate agreement with Airbus Defence and Space covers the pos-sible addition of a Cirit capability to the C295W transport/patrol aircraft.

In the Turkish armed forces T-129 attack helicopter application, the Cirit is partnered with the laser-guided L-UMTAS long-range anti-tank missile. Roketsan has now completed the qualification phase of the imaging infrared version of UMTAS and is preparing for produc-tion. This weapon is initially intended for use from armoured vehicles and from fixed/towed land platforms. Work is also being performed to integrate the UMTAS with stabilised weapon systems on naval vessels.

Alongside UMTAS, Roketsan is also close to bringing the OMTAS medium-range anti-tank missile

system into production. With an effective range of between 200 and 4,000m, OMTAS is a tube-launched weapon for vehicle application. Although anti-armour is its primary task, it also has capabilities against a variety of other target types. OMTAS offers direct attack and top attack profiles, and can be launched in fire-and-forget or fire-and-update modes. Product and production line qualification is nearing completion.

Experience from the L-UMTAS programme has allowed Roketsan to develop a version tailored for launch from small UAVs, in which SWaP (size, weight and power) fac-tors are critical. MAM-L, also known as Smart Micro Munition, employs the guidance system and warhead of the L-UMTAS missile but lacks the

motor, keeping its length down to less than 1m and weight to around 50 lb. Depending on the altitude and speed from which it is dropped, the MAM-L has an effective range of up to 8km.

Roketsan is aiming the MAM-L at a number of airborne platforms, with smaller UAVs being the principal application. The weapon is already integrated and operational with the Bayraktar and Karayel tactical UAVs operated by the Turkish armed forces.

Roketsan’s wide range of missiles and other weapons is on display on Stand 10-B05, including the Teber precision-guided bomb kit in both Mk 81 and Mk 82 configuration, and the SOM and SOM-J long-range stand-off missiles.

Since the last IDEX exhibition there has been considerable movement in the fighter market in the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region, not only in terms of new orders, but also with the beginning of deliveries from previous orders. For beleaguered fighter manufactur-ers in Europe and the USA, beset by shrinking budgets in their domestic markets, the fighter boom in the MENA region has been a welcome development.

For Dassault, for instance, the sale of the

Rafale to the Egyptian air force rep-resented the first firm order for the type after many years of marketing, and a number of “near misses” such as an aborted sale to Morocco. Egypt ordered 24 Rafales on 16 February 2015 and the first three of them were delivered in July that year. A further three arrived in January 2016. The order is split between eight single-seaters and 16 two-seaters.

Not long after Egypt bought the type, Qatar announced its intentions to acquire the Rafale in late April 2015, with a contract being signed for 24, plus 12 options, on 4 May. The Rafale had been evaluated against a

number of types, and will supplant the Mirage 2000-9s that are cur-rently in service with the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF). Underlining the rising star of the Rafale, India finally concluded long-running negotia-tions with an order for 36 aircraft in September 2016.

Qatar’s Rafale deal is part of a massive spending spree by the oil- and gas-rich state covering a wide range of defence equipment. Also on the table is a requirement for up to 72 F-15QA Advanced Eagles from Boeing. Similar to the F-15SA Eagle for Saudi Arabia, the acquisition of Advanced Eagles would dramati-cally enhance the capabilities of the QEAF. US Congress had held up the sale to Qatar for some time, but this was finally approved last November.

Saudi Arabia itself has started to receive the first F-15SA aircraft that were ordered in a huge deal cover-ing 84 new-build aircraft, and the modification to F-15SA standard of 68 existing F-15S Eagles. What Boeing terms the F-15 Advanced has an APG-63(V)3 AESA radar, addi-tional outer wing pylons, flat-panel cockpit displays and a Tiger Eyes infrared search and track system. Deliveries to Saudi Arabia began in December, and the type was offi-cially unveiled in a ceremony at Riyadh on 25 January.

Also approved at the same time as the Qatari F-15 deal was the sale of up to 40 Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornets to Kuwait. Within days of the approval, the Kuwait Air Force announced it would be buying 28 Super Hornets. These aircraft will serve alongside the 28 Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role fighters that were ordered, together with a train-ing and support package, through

12 in December 2012. The first air-craft from that order undertook its first flight from BAE’s Warton plant in recent weeks, and the type is due to enter Omani service this year.

Eurofighter continues to tout the Typhoon in Bahrain as a potential replacement for the country’s eld-erly F-5 fighters. In the meantime, a request was submitted to the US Congress last September for the possible sale of additional F-16s to Bahrain. Approval was initially held up by the Obama administration, but signs have emerged in recent days that the Trump administration is preparing to approve the sale.

In September 2011, Iraq con-cluded a deal for 18 F-16IQ Block 52 aircraft from Lockheed Martin, acquired via the US government. This was soon followed by an order for a second 18-aircraft batch. On 5 June 2014 the first was formally handed over to the Iraqi air force at the Fort Worth factory, with training being undertaken at Tucson, Arizona. An initial batch of F-16s arrived in Iraq in July 2015, and began flying combat missions soon after. How-ever, the ongoing war against Daesh caused the US government to tem-porarily hold up deliveries to Iraq, the second batch not being deliv-ered until August 2016.

In the meantime, desperate to receive jet aircraft to continue the fight with Daesh, Iraq sought Su-25 ‘Frogfoot’ aircraft from Russia, a batch of five being delivered in late June 2015. They were followed by aircraft gifted by Iran, or more accu-rately returned, as the aircraft had originally fled Iraq at the end of the 1991 Gulf War. Further aircraft have also been acquired from Russia.

Meanwhile, Algeria continues to add to its Sukhoi Su-30MKA fleet, having received an additional eight aircraft in December to join the 44 aircraft acquired since 2006. Another six remain to be delivered to bring the fleet total to 58.

The largest display area at IDEX is that of EDIC, the Emirates Defense Industries Company. As a strategic partner of the IDEX exhibition, EDIC is presenting the products and ser-vices of 12 Emirati companies that span a wide spectrum of technolo-gies, highlighting the world-class capabilities of the UAE in the defence sector.

EDIC was formed in 2014 through the integration of assets owned by Mubadala Development Company, Tawazun Holding and Emirates Advanced Investments Group. The group includes companies active in many defence sectors, such as manufacturing and maintenance, mapping, communications, logis-tics, technology development and autonomous systems. The aim of EDIC is to provide a single integrated platform from which the UAE’s defence industries can offer world-class facilities and support for the

UAE Armed Forces and those in the wider region.

Active in the MRO (maintenance, repair, overhaul) sector are Al Taif Technical Services and AMMROC. Al Taif offers integrated life-cycle support of defence systems, sup-ported by an integrated supply chain. It also has a state-of-the-art research and development capabil-ity. AMMROC has been active since 2010 as a major MRO organisation for both rotary- and fixed-wing air-craft, supporting the UAE Armed Forces and others in the region.

Another UAE-based aerospace services company is Global Aero-space Logistics, whose portfolio of services includes engineering and technical services, maintenance, air traffic management, training solu-tions, sales and leasing, and logistics and supply chain management.

Aircrew training for both com-mercial and military pilots is the role of the Horizon Flight Academy at Al Ain. The academy trains UAE

Emirati excellence on showpilots and those from other nations.

In the weapons and military equipment arena are the well-known names of Caracal, NIMR Automotive and Tawazun Dynamics. Caracal manufactures a renowned range of small arms, from pistols to sniper rifles, and also provides supporting services such as training. NIMR is a leading military vehicle manu-facturer that provides a product

portfolio that meets the needs of both military forces and security organisations. Tawazun Dynamics is the joint venture formed with Denel Dynamics to produce the Al-Tariq range of precision-guided weapons that is in service with the UAE Air Force and Air Defence.

Mapping, survey and geospa-tial services are the specialities of Bayanat for Mapping & Surveying Services LLC, which was formed as a commercial spin-off from the UAE Armed Forces’ Military Sur-vey Department. Its expertise is offered to commercial and gov-ernment organisations to aid their decision-making. Diverse busi-nesses involved in oil and gas, transportation and utilities ben-efit from Bayanat’s services, which include survey, cartography in both 2D and 3D, visualisation and expert advice.

Also in the EDIC fold are a number of technology companies, such as C4 Advanced Solutions, which serves defence, government, public safety, education and healthcare sectors. Thales Advanced Solutions, a joint venture between EDIC and Thales, specialises in defence electron-ics. Tawazun Precision Industries supports a range of industries through advanced tooling, treat-ment and other capabilities, while Naval Advanced Solutions provides maritime systems, logistics support, consultation and other services to defence clients.

Rheinmetall continues to expand the functionality of its widely sold Multi-Ammunition Softkill System (MASS) ship protection system with new payloads and sensor integra-tion options.

MASS has been designed to provide multi-spectral protec-tion against guided weapons in all relevant wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (including radar, infrared and elec-tro-optical). Suitable for installation on a wide range of platforms, it can be integrated into an existing command and weapon control sys-tem, or operated as a standalone system.

Typically MASS consists of between one and six trainable launchers, each able to fire 32 stand-ard Omni-Trap munitions. Each launcher comes with a control unit and a data interface (Ethernet/RS422 or other standard interface).

At IDEX the company is show-casing two new options: MASS_OCR with an off-board corner reflector (OCR) payload; and the new stan-dalone MASS Stand Alone with Sensor Suite for smaller units.

The MASS_OCR introduces a new corner reflector countermeasures payload, designed to produce a ship-like radar response, which can be used in either the distraction or seduction modes. Each launcher unit can be configured with two OCR rockets programmed to deploy the corner reflector to a range of between 35m and 850m. The reflec-

tor payload itself is suspended beneath a parachute, sustaining the effect for over 60 seconds.

With the MASS Stand Alone with Sensor Suite, Rheinmetall has engi-neered a self-contained system with its own control unit, power supply and sensor suite (a radar warner and a laser warning system) and typically one or two MASS decoy launchers.

Apart from the standard and OCR versions, Rheinmetall offers a number of other customisations. These include MASS_ISS (Integrated Sensor Suite), which features inte-grated radar ESM systems as well as laser warning; MASS_ATD (Anti Torpedo Decoy), which embod-

ies acoustic decoys to provide an anti-torpedo capability; the MASS Omni-Trap mmW incorporates chaff cut to millimetric wave fre-quencies for defeating the latest generation of guided missiles; and MASS_DUERAS, which configures the standard MASS launcher with additional distraction-mode chaff decoy rockets.

Soucy Defense of Canada is target-ing its composite rubber track at the many countries in the Middle East that operate the M113 series of tracked armoured personnel car-riers (APCs) and variants that are currently fitted with conventional steel track with rubber pads.

So far Soucy Defense has sup-plied more than 11,000 sets of its composite rubber track for instal-lation on a variety of articulated all-terrain vehicles, including the BAE Systems Bv 206, Bv 206S and current production BvS 10, and the Singapore Technologies Bronco. More than 2,000 vehicle sets have been supplied for the M113 APC and variants used by a number of coun-tries, including Canada and Norway, and they are now standard fit on the current production CV9030N being delivered to Norway.

For trial purposes, the compos-ite rubber track has been installed on many other platforms including

the Alvis Scimitar, the Alvis Spartan APC, the Armadillo APC, the ASCOD APC, the M2 Bradley IFV and the Pro-tected Mission Module Carrier G5.

When compared with conven-

tional steel track, composite rubber track offers a significant number of advances including through life-cycle cost savings. Survivability benefits include less rolling resist-

ance, increased top speed and acceleration, reduced engine load and reduced fuel consumption, which leads to an increase in the operating range. Composite rubber track is also much lighter than con-ventional steel track and causes less noise and vibration, reducing the effect on the crew and the degrad-ing of the vehicle electronics.

Its mean durability is typically between 6,000 and 10,000km and trials have shown that when operat-ing in sand, composite rubber track has around 19 per cent more trac-tion than conventional steel track.

While originally designed for installation on lighter tracked plat-forms, Soucy Defense has been rapidly increasing the gross vehi-cle weight (GVW) and has recently tested its tracks at a GVW of 42 tonnes, with the objective being to raise this to 50 tonnes.

SpetsTechnoExport (Stand 12-C25) is presenting the latest version of its Phantom tactical unmanned ground vehicle (UGV).

It is fitted with a stabilised turn-table on which can be mounted various weapon systems such as a 12.7mm machine gun (MG) and anti-tank guided weapons such as the locally produced Barrier. The lat-ter is of the laser-guided type and has a maximum range of 5,000m. It is fitted with a tandem high-explo-sive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead to neutralise threat targets fitted with explosive reactive armour (ERA). According to SpetsTechnoExport, successful firing trials have already been carried out in Ukraine with the Phantom UGV fitted with the 12.7mm MG.

of cross-country performance, even when operating in sand. The Phan-tom UGV is controlled by a secure radio channel with a maximum range of 10km from the operator or from a fibre optic cable up to 5km from the operator.

According to Pavlo Barbul of SpetsTechnoExport: “The upgraded version of the tactical unmanned multipurpose vehicle demonstrates just one of the many configura-tions of the Phantom. The objective of the project is to create military equipment that can effectively per-form a variety of combat tasks while protecting and saving the lives of soldiers.”

In addition to being used as a weapons platform, the Phantom UGV can also be used as a reconnais-sance system, carrying ammunition to forward operating units and transporting wounded personnel from the battlefield to the rear. It can also be used as a power source, and when fitted with the correct attachment could be used in a de-mining role.

China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has brought its latest export VT4 main battle tank (MBT), which is already in production for an undisclosed export customer believed to be Thailand.

The VT4 MBT is armed with a 125mm smoothbore gun that in addition to firing conventional natures of ammunition, can fire a laser-guided projectile with a maximum range of 5,000m. As a 125mm automatic loader is fitted, the crew has been reduced to three consisting of commander, gunner and driver, which has led to a more compact design.

An all-electric gun control system is installed, and the commander and gunner are each provided with stabilised sights with day/thermal channels and integrated laser range-

finder. This sighting system allows for hunter/killer target engagements to take place, in which the target is first detected by the commander and when confirmed as hostile, is handed over to the gunner, who carries out the target engagement.

A 7.62mm machine gun (MG) is mounted co-axial with the main armament, and on the roof is a

remote-controlled 12.7mm MG operated by the tank commander.

The VT4 is powered by a turbo-charged diesel developing 1,200hp coupled to an automatic transmis-sion, which gives it a maximum road speed of 70km/h. With a combat weight of 52 tonnes, the VT4 has a power-to-weight ratio of more than 23hp/tonne.

According to NORINCO, its latest VT4, previously called the MBT-3000, is fully digitised. Other features include an inertial navigation system coupled to a global posi-tioning system, an air-conditioning system, an NBC system and a fire/explosion detection and suppres-sion system.

The hull and turret are made from welded steel armour with an addi-tional layer of composite armour over the frontal arc. Explosive reac-tive armour can be added to the composite side skirts.

Battlefield survivability is further enhanced by the installation of laser detectors coupled to banks of grenade launchers. A total of 12 grenade launchers are fitted, of which eight are for smoke/screening grenades and the remaining four for shrapnel to provide a close-in self-defence capability.

Turkish company Otokar (Stand 10-A05) has brought its latest Tulpar-S in an armoured person-nel carrier (APC) configuration to IDEX, fitted with its Basok remote controlled weapon station (RCWS) and armed with a 7.62mm machine gun (MG).

The Tulpar-S has an electronic architecture, which makes it easier to be re-roled for different battle-field missions, as well as integrating new technology as it becomes avail-able. It is fitted with rubber band tracks, which are not only lighter than conventional steel tracks but also much quieter and have less vibration and rolling resistance, thus increasing the operational range of the Tulpar-S. According to Otokar, the Tulpar-S has a high level of bal-listic and mine protection and is fully

The company is also showing a number of other armoured fight-

The Cobra II is the latest wheeled AFV to be developed by Otokar and has already attracted significant orders from home and export mar-kets, with the former including the Turkish Land Forces Command.

When compared to the original Cobra, the Cobra II has greater internal volume, payload and protection, and in addition to the driver and commander carries seven dismounts.

Otokar has strengthened its pres-ence in the region by establishing Otokar Land Systems in the United Arab Emirates. According to Serdar Görgüç, Otokar general manager: “Today 30,000 military vehicles we have developed for different needs are being used on five continents in over 30 countries. Otokar Land Sys-tems will be the driving force in our regional expansion, especially in the Gulf countries.“

Last week UMS Skeldar announced the first contract for its Skeldar V-200 rotary-wing UAV, with the Indonesian ministry of defence. The Skeldar was deployed to the country in late 2016 as part of performance and acceptance tests, in advance of delivery and the start of operator training. Indonesia is acquiring the Skeldar V-200 for surveillance of the country’s long coastline, the system having proven its itself for both mar-itime and overland reconnaissance.

A group of ten Kuwaiti cadets has arrived at Défense Con-s e i l I n t e r n a t i o n a l ’s ( D C I ’s ) International Academic and Aero-nautical Training Centre (CIF-AA) in Salon-de-Provence, France, to begin helicopter pilot training.

Inaugurated in July 2016, the CIF-AA has been fully refurbished and updated to incorporate the latest

digital teaching resources. The cen-tre features ten ‘new generation’ classrooms with interactive white-boards, four language labs and an engine simulator bench.

Training takes place in a military setting on the Salon-de-Provence air base, in full coordination with the French Air Force Academy. Fol-lowing this initial phase, most of

the cadets will from May be eligible to specialise as helicopter pilots at the International Helicopter Train-ing Centre (CIF-H) in Dax.

This latest helicopter pilot training contract continues a rela-tionship between DCI and Kuwait to build resources in helicopter, fighter and transport pilots. It follows train-ing in these areas initiated in 2014

and 2015, during which 56 cadets were, or are being, trained.

DCI’s mission is to transfer French military know-how to the armed forces of nations friendly with France. As well as operating several international training centres in France, the company also has bases in Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia among others.

Leonardo Airborne and Space Systems (Stand 06-A03) has been selected by Safran Electronics & Defense to supply its PicoSAR Active Electronically-Scanned Array radar for Safran’s Patroller Unmanned Air System (UAS).

Patroller was in April 2016 selected to meet the French armed forces’ Système de Drone tactique programme. Fourteen are due to enter into service with the army’s 61st Artillery Regiment in 2018.

Serbia’s Yugoimport-SDPR (Stand 12-E20) is unveiling its new Milosh (4x4) multi-purpose armoured vehicle for the first time.

Milosh has been developed to undertake a wide range of battle-field missions including use as an ambulance, armoured personnel carrier (APC), command vehicle and reconnaissance vehicle, as well as a platform for various weapon systems.

It has an all-welded steel armour hull with an appliqué passive armour package, which provides protection to NATO STANAG 4569 standards.

The front-mounted power pack consists of a Cummins ISB 300 diesel engine coupled to an Allison 3500 SP automatic transmission, which gives a maximum road speed of up to 110km/h.

The new T700 drive line has been developed by Timoney and Texelis to meet a maximum gross axle weight requirement of up to 7,000kg, which gives a gross vehicle weight of 14,000kg. This uses proven modu-lar assemblies such as wheel hubs

and differentials from the Texelis rigid axle range in conjunction with Timoney independent suspen-sion technology, to provide a high level of cross-country mobility and a good ride for the occupants. The Milosh powered steering system has also been designed by Timoney.

The complete wheel assembly has been provided by Tyron and uses runflat inserts to ensure the mobility of the vehicle for up to 50km in case the tyres are damaged by enemy action.

With an endurance of 20 hours, and an operating ceiling of 20,000ft, the Patroller UAS will be used to provide real-time surveillance and intelligence in support of French land forces. Its modular design enables it to carry a multi-sensor intelligence payload exceeding 250kg, either installed in the air-frame or in pods.

PicoSAR, which will be used for long-range overland surveillance missions, was selected by Safran following an international competi-tion. Under the multi-million euro

contract, Leonardo will provide a number of radars and spares, with deliveries set to start later this year.

According to Leonardo, PicoSAR will be used to detect moving land-based targets and collect imagery of the ground using the system’s Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mode. PicoSAR is able to produce SAR imagery in both ‘strip’ and ‘spot’ modes, as well as collecting ground-moving target indication data.

Leonardo has to date sold Pico-SAR to more than 10 customers worldwide.

Designed to operate at 12,000ft above ground level, the Redkite WAMI can image a whole city-sized area all at once – detecting and simultaneously tracking all sig-nificant geographically dispersed movers in real time, while also recording events for later forensic analysis.

Redkite’s greater than 50 mega-pixels (MP) camera can image an area up to 4km in diameter. From within this expansive field of view,

operators can retrieve up to 10 select video feeds, and stream them down to hundreds of desktop computers, tablets or other mobile

Each Kestrel Block II sensor, when mounted on an aerostat, creates a 440MP mosaic image and can also monitor an entire city-sized area at once, day and night, and for weeks at a time.

“The key upgrade in Kestrel Block II,” said John Marion, president of Logos Technologies, “is that we have improved the operational reli-ability, while significantly reducing the weight from 150lb [68kg] to less than 85lb [40kg].” This lighter weight allows the Block II to be paired with a wider range of aerostats, sensors and communications equipment.

Building on the on-time and on-budget delivery of two 72m High Speed Support Vessels (HSSVs) to the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) in 2016, Australian shipbuilder Austal (A-015) has announced an

expanded HSSV design portfolio that includes a new 113m variant shown for the first time at NAVDEX.

In common with the US Navy’s proven 103m Expeditionary Fast Transport (EFT) platform – designed and built by Austal and now oper-ating with the US 5th Fleet in the

Middle East region – the HSSV’s sealift capabilities support a broad range of naval logistics operations.

The all-aluminium, twin-hulled HSSV features a shallow draft that enables the fast, effective deploy-ment of hundreds of personnel and equipment, wheeled and tracked

vehicles and cargo, with medium- or heavy-lift aviation support options available for joint force military operations and other missions, such as search and rescue, humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

Furthermore, the HSSV’s unique open design can be customised to achieve even greater mission flexibility. For example, it is possi-ble to integrate specialist mission packages such as mine warfare, hydrographic survey and research, and special forces operations.

Austal has to date delivered seven EFT ships to the US Navy, including USNS Millinocket pictured here, and will deliver a further five through to 2021. All have been built at Austal USA’s yard at Mobile, Alabama.

The two HSSVs for the RNO – RNOV Al Mubshir and RNOV Al Naasir – were both built at Austal’s Hen-derson yard in Western Australia. This facility also built the 101m aluminium fast ferry WestPac Express, which has been on charter to the US Marines Corps for the past 15 years.

Iveco Defence Vehicles (Stand 06- B07) is showing its latest Light Multirole Vehicle (LMV ) in the specialised Public Order con-figuration, which is already in service with an undisclosed customer in the Gulf.

This specialised LMV has a number of new features including a one-piece roof that replaces the original modular roof design. According to Iveco, this increases the vehicle’s flexibility and allows the end user to rapidly fit a remote weapon station (RWS) or a protected weapon sta-tion (PWS). It can typically be armed with a 5.56mm, 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher (AGL).

Other improvements to this version include a higher level of protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other battlefield threats, as well as addi-tional comfort for the crew.

In addition, the LMV on show at IDEX has enhanced power supply through a higher output alternator,

and infrared headlights are incorpo-rated into a new bumper design with a centre-mounted towing pintle.

Crew survivability against mines and IEDs is enhanced through the installation of blast-attenuating seats.

The vehicle being shown here is also fitted with firing ports in all four doors to provide a close-in self-defence capability.

The LMV is currently being marketed in two versions. The baseline model has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 7,100kg, of which payload is up to 1,000kg. The second version has a GVW of up to 7,750kg,

of which payload is up to 1,500kg.So far, Iveco has sold more than

4,000 LMVs in various configura-tions and these are now deployed by 13 countries including the UK, which calls the vehicle the Panther.

Iveco Defence Vehicles has also completed development of the LMV 2, which was launched in Paris in mid-2016. This has many improve-ments, including an electronic architecture, a more powerful diesel engine and a greater payload.

Other new vehicles are the amphibious VBTP 6x6 and the M1250.70T WM high-mobility 8x8 tractor.

CMF’s main focus areas are dis-rupting terrorism, preventing piracy, reducing illegal activities, and promoting a safe maritime environ-ment for all. Speaking to Jane’s last year, Vice Admiral Kevin Donegan, Commander, US Naval Forces Cen-tral Command, US Fifth Fleet, and Combined Maritime Forces, made clear the imperative for security at sea: “Nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil transits through the Strait of Hor-muz every day,” he said. “Imagine the impact on the global economy if suddenly that oil stops flowing because of restricted sea lanes. This region is clearly important to the whole world.”

With the conflict in Yemen now starting to spill out into neighbour-ing seas, the spotlight is once again falling on naval forces to ensure that maritime trade can continue to flow unimpeded into the Middle East region.

That responsibility is very much on the shoulders of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), a unique multinational collective of more than 30 like-minded nations dedi-cated to promoting security and free flow of commerce across 3.2 million square miles of international waters in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Somali Basin, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf.

Headquartered at the US Naval Support Activity in Bahrain, CMF is commanded by a US Navy vice admiral (who also serves as Com-mander US Navy Central Command and US Navy Fifth Fleet), with a UK Royal Navy commodore as his deputy. Operations are executed by three combined task forces: CTF 150

(maritime security and counter-terrorism), CTF 151 (counter piracy) and CTF 152 (Arabian Gulf security and co-operation).

CMF is today comprised of 31 member nations: Australia, Bah-rain, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Jordan, the Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, the Philippines, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, the Seychelles, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, the USA and Yemen.

Participation is purely voluntary, and member nations are not bound by either a political or military man-date. The contribution from each varies depending on its ability to contribute assets, and the availabil-ity of those assets at any given time: contributions can vary from the provision of a liaison officer at CMF HQ in Bahrain to the deployment of warships or support vessels in task forces, and land-based maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

“The sea continues to be the lifeblood of the world economy,” added Commodore Will Warrender, commander of the UK Maritime Component Command in Bahrain and deputy commander of CMF. “The protection of the seas, and our proficiency in ensuring that we maintain the capability to provide security, will remain a key maritime responsibility.

“Of course, to do this we need to ensure that we, along with our partners, have the capability and confidence to act together. The best method to ensure this is to train both as individuals, but most importantly, collectively as a team.”

UAS flies southThe Royal Australian Navy has selected the S-100 Camcopter from Schiebel (Stand 07-D04) to assess the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned air sys-tem (UAS) capabilities alongside its manned helicopter inventory.

The navy will introduce the S-100 at the end of April for test and evaluation, prior to a poten-tial operational acquisition. The contract calls for the provision of one system, with an option for another, together with three years of follow-on logistics support.

Hans Georg Schiebel, owner of the Schiebel Group, said: “We are sure that the S-100 will prove to be an effective asset that will set a new benchmark for UAS capability.”

The S-100 will join the Boeing/Insitu Scan Eagle, which the navy is currently using from a variety of ships. Wherever possible the navy will partner unmanned systems with a manned capability, with the S-100 likely to be teamed with the NH Industries MRH90.

The Camcopter S-100 holds an enviable track record of sup-porting naval customers, with missions successfully completed on more than 30 different ships on all the world’s oceans, in every environment from the Tropics to the Arctic.

This is most visibly demonstrated by the regular International Mine Countermeasures Exercise (IMCMEX), which has now widened its aperture to address a range of defensive operations designed to protect international commerce and trade. Last year’s event, ‘IMCMEX 2016’, was claimed to be the world’s largest maritime exercise, reflect-ing both the number of participants (more than 30 drawn from six con-tinents) and the vast geographical spread of its activities over an area of operations from the Suez Canal down through the Red Sea to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, through the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, and into the

Gulf. These vast sea areas provided the venue for fleet tactical exercises focused on mine countermeasures, maritime infrastructure protection, and maritime security operations.

“The participating nations are united by a common thread: the need to protect the free flow of commerce from a range of maritime threats including piracy, terror-ism, and mines,” said Vice Admiral Donegan. “This exercise is also a great opportunity for us to build proficiency and test the latest tech-nology available for ensuring the global maritime commerce stays open and secure. It also allows us to work with our partners to reinforce

adherence to the international rules and accepted behavioural norms expected of professional mariners.”

Commodore Warrender added: “IMCMEX demonstrates the cap-ability and co-operation of the international community and is not about any one nation or group. Our aim is to conduct exercises with our partner nations that allow us to con-tinue to develop our interoperability and capability to ensure that we are ready to meet potential challenges now and in the future.

“No one nation here is big enough to be able to address the whole prob-lem, but no one nation is so small that their contribution doesn’t matter.”

Part of the major French partici-pation at IDEX is the EDEN cluster (Stand 07-B53), an organisation that incorporates 130 French SMEs in the defence sector. Nine of those com-panies are exhibiting in Abu Dhabi as part of the cluster’s display.

Formed in 2008 by six business owners in the Rhône-Alpes region of France, the EDEN (European Defense Economic Network) cluster brings together SMEs from across France to explore synergies and to pool expertise and technologies so that made-to-measure solutions can be created at competitive prices. The group employs around 9,000 peo-ple and has a combined turnover of around a billion euros. More than half of that is generated by exports.

A well-known EDEN company exhibiting at IDEX is Metravib, an expert in acoustic gunshot detec-tion systems. Its products have been sold to 20 countries, including 12 in NATO, and its PILAR system has been incorporated into the French army’s Griffon and Jaguar vehicles as part of the Scorpion programme. EDEN member IRTS also has a part in the Griffon and Jaguar vehicle pro-grammes, having been selected by Nexter, Sagem and Thales to equip the vehicles with gun computers and ultra-rugged displays.

Another SME providing equip-ment for military vehicles is Elno, which develops communication systems for operation in severe envi-ronments. Being shown at IDEX are the Hoplite armoured vehicle head-set and ELIPS IP digital intercom for military vehicles. Other communi-cations products on show include the P2C personal communications

controller, Tetrapol bone conduc-tion headset for use in very noisy environments, and the HPH700 heli-copter flight helmet.

From the aircraft equipment sector comes Aeronet, which spe-cialises in a range of air transport solutions such as pallets, restraining nets, straps and fittings. The company is the main sup-plier to the French army of helicopter roping systems. Another EDEN member exhibiting is Nicomatic, which produces a range of innovative and spe-cialised connectors and man-machine interface switching.

Two of EDEN’s exhibi-tors at IDEX are from the personal protection sector. Ouvry develops new-generation personal pro-

tective equipment for use against CBRNe threats, including both body and respiratory protection. The company also provides decon-tamination equipment, such as the DEC’POL emergency mitt that pro-vides protection and neutralisation capabilities against chemical and biological agents.

Ouvry is providing more than 22,000 CBRN sets as part of the French army’s FELIN future sol-dier programme, and 20,000 sets for employment by civil defence, law enforcement and emergency medical services agencies. Here at IDEX the company is displaying its OPPS pilot protective system, which provides both above- and below-the-neck protection for fighter pilots. The system has been flight approved for Mirage 2000 and Rafale fighters.

Bollé Protection also manu-factures personal protection equipment, including the Gunfire ballistic spectacles. These come with optional clear or CSP lenses, the lat-ter featuring an innovative coating

that provides for activities in alternating low light/bright light situations, and in extremes of tem-perature. The Gunfire spectacles also feature

From the training world comes VSM (Visualisation Simulation Mod-elisation), which has more than two decades’ experience of creating aircraft and helicopter simulators. Since January 2014 VSM has oper-ated a training centre at Istres in the south of France. Part of the facility includes ESTHEL (emergency and shooting trainer for helicopters), which combines the training of both hoist operators and pilots in SAR operations with door gunner activi-ties. The SAGOD (safety go-down) simulator is a transportable system that provides training for person-nel in the rescue environment who need to be hoisted, such as rescu-ers, emergency doctors and search teams, including dogs. In April this year VSM is to open an aquatic cen-tre to allow the training of winching from water from up to 6 metres height.

VSM’s services and simulators have been used for many years by the Dutch and Kuwaiti air forces, while the French navy has taken out a multi-year contract. The French air force is also evaluating the service, while the Royal Saudi Air Force and Police have also used the facility.

The ability to timely detect enemy incursions is vital for countering such a threat. UK-based Blighter Surveillance Systems (Stand 05-C20) is showing its new Explorer Nexus, a compact, lightweight, all-weather surveillance solution designed for covert operations.

“Our Blighter Explorer Nexus is a rapidly deployable fully integrated e-scan radar and thermal imaging system designed to provide covert all weather day/night surveillance for small border patrols in mountainous terrain and for specialist reconnais-sance personnel including those operating behind enemy lines,” said chief executive Mark Radford.

The product is designed to be deployed from transport back-packs, with the radar and camera sensors mounted on a single tri-pod. This allows use by foot patrol or from a vehicle for remote border surveillance, for temporary camp

protection, forward reconnaissance and other covert operations. It can detect a crawler at 1.5km and a moving vehicle at 8km.

US based HighCom Security (Stand C3-004) has just announced four new hard armour models to its ballistic product line. As with High-Com’s other products, the four new Guardian models received compli-ance status through the National Institute of Justice compliance testing programme (NIJ CTP).

“With the growth of body armour supply, and considering these are life-saving products, we are focus-ing all possible resources into the certification programme created by NIJ along with our ISO 9001:2008 and BA 9000:2012 certified quality management system,” said Michael Bundy, president of HighCom.

He said the new models offer law enforcement and military person-nel an expanded selection of both single-curve and multi-curve options for up-armour requirements, spe-cifically for armour-piercing threats and high-powered rifle threats. The company’s Guardian series prod-

uct line now includes 10 NIJ 0101.06 certified models.

Announcing the launch of its Striker ultra-light ‘UL’ and high-performance ‘HP’ ballistic protective helmets, HighCom stated these models exceed ballistic resistance as speci-fied under NIJ Standard 0106.01, as well as MIL-STD-662F according to STANAG 2920.

Sales of HighCom’s current light-weight solutions have already exceeded 100,000 units.

HighCom’s helmets are designed using the most advanced ballistic materials including ultra-high molec-ular weight polyethylene. The UL and HP series come in various cuts and styles including the ACH, MICH and PASGT (personnel armour system for ground troops), and will be commer-cially available through HighCom’s global distribution network.

Enhanced riflesColt (Stand 03-B18) has added the M5 Enhanced Carbine series of assault rifles for the modern war fighter and special weapons law enforcement professional when weight, comfort and adaptability are critical. It features a com-pletely redesigned lower receiver with fully ambidextrous controls and a six-position receiver exten-sion adaptable to any sized shooter and bilateral shooting style. The Colt M5 Enhanced Car-bine has a low-profile gas block in a carbine length gas system and a free-floating modular rail sys-tem, maximising accessory-rail real estate, comfort, weight and accuracy, while at the same time maintaining lethality and accu-racy. It is available in 10.3in, 11.5in and 14.5in barrel lengths.

Ukrainian APCThe Varta is a special purpose vehicle designed and manufac-tured by Kiev-based Ukrainian Armor (Stand 08-D22). Varta is an armoured personnel carrier (APC) that can serve as a command post vehicle or to evacuate wounded personnel. Ukrainian Armor also develops and produces various other types of vehicles, includ-ing ambulances for civilian and military applications. Its vehicles are operated by Ukraine’s rapid deployment police task forces operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

For effective military training, the simulated operation should appear as realistic as possible. The FATS 100e virtual training system from Megg-itt Training Systems (Stand 03-A22) is making its Middle East debut at IDEX, with several other products.

“The Middle East continues to be a key market for Meggitt,” said Frank Socolow, managing director, Middle East and North Africa. “We believe our enhanced FATS 100e system and our local dedicated team represent a strong solution for customers in this region.”

He said the FATS 100e system, introduced in late 2015, offers a major expansion in weapons train-ing capability. The system’s 3D marksmanship provides visually realistic and highly detailed terrains and targets, including weather, and striking visual effects such as wind-blown environments, birds in flight,

dirt splashes and explosions. Impor-tantly, the FATS 100e system features VBS3-based collective training and automatic coaching, which has pre-viously never been available in the small-arms training market.

Meggitt’s display also includes its BlueFire wireless weapon simula-tors, which provide the same form, fit and function of live-weapon counterparts at the highest level of virtual realism. These simulators include the G36 assault rifle, Glock pistol and M32 grenade launcher.

The fixed target head of Meggitt’s multi-function stationary infantry target can respond to hits, automatic triggers activated by soldier move-ments, or a pre-programmed scenario. This provides a realistic environment for urban operations and specialised training. Meggitt’s XWT GEN3 wireless target carrier is available in both indoor and outdoor versions, and is weather-resistant for extreme environments.

Mitigating bomb blastBlastGard International (Stand C3-004) is presenting its bomb mitigating Trash Receptacles models MTR91 and MTR101, which reduce the pressure from a very large charge from 60.47psi (fatal), to 7.5psi (eardrum damage) at 3m. BlastGard CEO Michael Gor-don said: “Under extensive testing, BlastGard’s MTR units suppress the force of a very large charge, even when it is placed against the vul-nerable sidewall weld seam. The units dramatically reduce blast pressures and extinguish the fire-ball within 5 milliseconds, all while maintaining complete structural integrity. IXM2C2’s principal benefit is its ability to provide real-time situational awareness and a com-mon operating picture (COP). This advanced multi-mission system incorporates the Incident Command System (ICS), which allows comprehensive resource management and the capacity to mitigate risk in all operational environments. IXTROM solutions interoperate seamlessly with exist-ing IT infrastructures, are easy to adapt, and scale cost-effectively.

The world’s first and only auton-omous robotic human type target system can turn soldiers into ‘pre-combat veterans’, says Australia-based company Marathon Targets (Stand 07-C01).

Used in dry and live-fire combat training, the robotic targets look, move and behave like real people. This significantly improves the war fighter’s marksmanship skills to hit a fleeting and agile adversary in real-world operat-ing environments.

Already in service with numerous militaries, including the US Army and Marine Corps, as well as the UAE Armed Forces, Marathon targets are employed for live-fire manoeu-vre training for force elements ranging from individual combat teams or sections to battalion-sized formations.

The company claims that sol-diers engaging Marathon robotic targets become more discriminat-ing of targets and more confident in their battlefield performance. By including robotic ‘civilians’ in

live-fire training exercises, a chal-lenging tactical scenario is created to test the soldiers’ response to a dynamic situation, which inevita-bly leads to greater discretion and a clearer understanding of the ‘rules of engagement’ by soldier participants.

The US Marine Corps determined that soldiers developed a 104 per cent increase in combat accuracy within a 24-hour period through use of Marathon robotic targets.

Marathon has recently introduced a new robotic target model, desig-nated T30, which was designed for

high-throughput training with high volumes of fire coming from one direction. It has inherited most of the features of the company’s flag-ship T40, including hit detection and armour protection up to .338, with the mannequin also able to lean to indicate acceleration and able to be programmed to peek from behind walls and barricades.

Secure communicationsTravelling members of defence and government agencies are vulnerable to cyber threats when communicating with headquarters over public or satellite networks. South African company Parsec (Stand 12-C40) has been developing high-security network encryption (HSNE) products since 2007.

“Given the success of our HS9200 family of products, Parsec is constantly looking for ways to improve our offering,” said business development director Tobie van Loggerenberg. “The HSNE9008 [pictured] is an upgrade on our earlier 9004 model, offering improved functionality and user-friendly features. It will be available in the second quarter of 2017.”

These devices that encrypt network traffic flowing over public or shared networks not only enable commercial or client supplied propri-etary cryptographic algorithms, but also cryptographically authenticated secure administrative access. The 9008 boasts a touchpad and larger screen in a more compact format. It has active hardware tamper protec-tion of cipher and key material, as well as virtual private network (VPN) fire-walling capabilities.

For the past seven years, Parsec has been co-operating with Middle East partners, offering technology transfer to the extent that its partners have now independently embarked on electronics manufacturing, testing and marketing. Van Loggerenberg said he believes these partners are soon to manufacture Parsec’s HSNE9008 in their own factory.

“As an original design manufacturer, with a worldwide client base, we at Parsec take pride in our ISO-certified project management and professional system engineering capabilities,” he concluded.

Stepahead, well-known for its military headwear, has just launched a market-leading fire-retardant flight suit. Working hand in glove with Gelvenor Textiles, Stepahead now produces the FR flight suits in its manufacturing facility in Pretoria. Made from Protal, advanced inher-ent FR materials, the suits can be manufactured to a customer’s colour preference, even in Hi-Vis yellow.

Protal is a patent-protected technical fibre blend that is strictly controlled. Gelvenor secured the rights from Waxman Fibres to pro-duce the fabric, which is lightweight yet strong, breathable and com-fortable to handle and wear. “From our early beginnings in 2004, we made quality our top priority,” said managing director Maureen Simoẽs.

Cutting edgeFox Knives (Stand 06-B05), based in Maniago in Italy, known for ages as ‘the city of knives’, is showcas-ing its extensive range of knives and cutting tools for military and security operators. In existence for 40 years, its FKMD (Fox Knives Military Division) is targeted at the domestic and international military market and was formed in 2005. Three of its latest and most prominent products are to be seen at IDEX this year. The Fox Oplita Bayonet Tanto is a combat knife bayonet made from premium materials. The Grand Trapper is ideal for heavy-duty work, being robust and strong, while the Desert Fox is a folding knife from the expert designer Boris Manash-erov. Fox Knives is an official NATO supplier with N/Cage Code AG180, and is ISO 9001 certified.

As the need to counter threats grows, specialist ammunition is improved, which is why UK com-pany Primetake (Stand 07-D21) is launching three new small arms ammunition products. It has just introduced the armour piercing (AP) and armour piercing incendi-ary (API) rounds in .338 (8.6x70mm) calibre, along with the .308 (7.62x 51mm) AP round.

Containing the same tungsten carbide core as the .338 AP projec-tile, the .338 API projectile uses a mechanically initiated incendiary effect, which produces both front and rear incendiary.

The company is also planning the launch later this year of new variants of its specialised elite rounds. One of these is the .300 urban combat round (UCR300) being developed within the important .300 AAC

Blackout calibre. It is aimed mainly at special forces and counter-terror units to maximise performance and capability in challenging tactical situations. The projectile is designed to penetrate laminated glass at 45° angles, while maintaining trajectory to the original point of aim.

The ability to ‘see’ at night adds immensely to a military or home-land security force’s operational success against an enemy. French company Bertin (Stand 07-B40) is offering its innovative FusionSight night vision device, developed with Photonis. The company stated: “To win in close combat missions under increasing global terrorist threats, the ability to use the night as your ally has become a priority.”

The compact monocular device enables infantry commanders and

special forces to operate efficiently in the field at night when facing hidden or camouflaged enemies. It combines a colour low-light sensor with a thermal imaging sensor to enhance situational awareness. This is achieved by providing the user with options to use a thermal image, optical colour image or a fused ther-mal and full colour image, which can also be recorded.

Making use of the Photonis col-our imaging sensor, the first image is recorded in colour in extreme

low-light conditions (~10 mlx) with-out additional illumination. The second image is recorded by a high- resolution thermal imaging sensor that can detect in any night condi-tion (down to 1 mlx). The embedded real-time image processor auto-matically selects key information from each sensor, allowing the user to see in pitch darkness better than in broad daylight. The image can be recorded and saved as a digital file.

A significant advantage is that the FusionSight can detect through smoke, other obscurants and in deep night with a thermal sensor, while the colour imaging sensor provides an optical colour image that can detect through windows with sufficient resolution to allow positive identification.

The combined view of thermal and colour imaging is critical in urban environments or inside struc-tures where little ambient light and multiple barriers offer concealment potential, and it is also useful for search and rescue missions to locate missing persons and casualties.
