In 2020 Wesley College celebrates 20 years of Wesley at Clunes. Conceived by then Principal David Loader, the program has seen significant

development over the years, but always stayed true to the initial concept of learning in community. Throughout 1999, after an important process of working alongside key community members, including Pat Cook and Malcolm Hull, the new houses rose quickly. The campus was officially opened by the former Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks on Sunday 2 April, 2000. Since then the Clunes community has opened its hearts and arms to over 6,000 students from Wesley’s three Melbourne campuses.

The community’s contribution to the success of Wesley at Clunes cannot be overstated. Wesley at Clunes has a strong and highly valued relationship with the local community, enriching many elements of the program: our Community Service program, Community Cooking, assisting with student Projects and volunteering at community events such as Booktown Festival and the Clunes Show. Wesley students are a visible part of the community, shopping at the local supermarket, greengrocer and butcher, collecting their parcels from the post office and moving about the township during the term. The ongoing support of the Clunes community is an integral and valuable part of the Wesley at Clunes program.

All Wesley College Year 9 students are offered the Clunes eight-week experience. The campus consists of 12 modern, self-contained student

houses with an overall capacity for 96 students, alongside several refurbished historic buildings. Our small oval was once a Council Depot! The houses are equipped to allow students to manage all their own cleaning, washing, shopping, cooking, budgeting and to live independently while in Clunes. Each house accommodates up to eight students of the same gender. Staff do not live in houses with the students, but many live onsite in adjacent houses, including all of the Clunes Leadership Team.

Our talented musicians perform at many local primary schools, elderly citizens centres and community events such as the ‘Fun Raiser’ held in Fraser Street after the heart-breaking damage to the Clunes Newsagent last year. These performances are always well received.

During the term community members are invited into each house to share a recipe, pass on their cooking tips and share a little about themselves and their life in Clunes. In return the students share some of their experiences of living in the city and the contrasts that they notice while in a small country town like Clunes. The students invite their guest back later in the term to share a meal and demonstrate their developing cooking skills.

Special Community Dinners are held during the year acknowledging the contribution of community members to the success of the program. The students also actively participate in the Clunes Football Netball Club during the season.

Whilst in residence at Clunes students experience a True Education to realise their full potential through a unique experience of shared living and community engagement. At Clunes, there are no traditional classrooms with the concept of

classrooms extending beyond the traditional school space to a varied range of settings, contexts and physical locations in and around the central Victorian Goldfields region and beyond.

The students visit many of the local farms and get their hands dirty helping out and experiencing true country living. They gain a better understanding of where the produce they purchase in the supermarket comes from and the enrichment of these experiences often allows them to make better food choices.

This year, coinciding with our Group 81 Festival Day on Sunday 22 March, we will celebrate this exciting milestone with the township of Clunes. The day will also serve as the official launch of Clunes – The Next Chapter, our roadmap for the future of Wesley at Clunes.

Festivities commence at 10.00am and will include musical performances, campus tours, student demonstrations and workshops, a food tent and a Wesley at Clunes History Gallery.

Clunes Former Free Library By Phil Taig

New Kitchen

The decrepit old kitchen in the Clunes Free Library building was demolished as part of the renovation when the interior of the South wing was repainted.

Replacement of the old with a new kitchen has been at the top of the action list planned by the Committee of Management (COM) but of course new kitchens are expensive and the CFL account is almost non-existent - nowhere near enough for such a venture ...until now.

The Chairman of the Clunes Free Library COM, Graeme Johnstone, has been working assiduously on submitting applications for Federal, State and local government grants. Each Government Grant is offered to organisations on a competitive basis and has stringent conditions as to:

• Which type of organisation is eligible • For what purpose funds are being requested • Why the requested amount should be given • Submission Deadline

Graeme was notified late last year that a submission he made for $12,000 to be used for a new kitchen in the Clunes Free library has been successful.

Maintenance

The COM is reliant on the volunteer services of ‘Friends of the Clunes Free Library’ for improvements to be made to the 140 year old building and its 1200 M 2 reserve. One such ‘Friend’ is Jack Laan and the COM is grateful and thank him for his several lawnmower sessions in cutting the grass on the reserve.

Next Meeting

The Clunes Free Library Committee of Management meet at 7:30pm on 20th February, 2020. Note that meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at the Library and everyone is welcome to attend, particularly anyone with kitchen planning ideas.

CLUNES MUSEUM: A HOME FOR YOUR HISTORY By James Curzon

2020: THE YEAR AHEAD

The New Year has started well with two special exhibitions. In 2020, the Museum team has a lot of projects coming to fruition. In particular, the Bring Back the Cannon team has a plan which will please all those who regard it as an icon of Clunes. The Museum will be commissioning a professional conservator’s report regarding siting options taking into account conservation issues and the cannon’s historical significance within the context of the Museum’s own Interpretive Plan. Obviously, we want to get this right. Of course, whatever the professional conservator recommends, the final decision will be made by the Museum committee. Thanks to John and Jen at the Nash, the Museum was the beneficiary of the September 2019 Friday Night Happy Hour Community Raffle to the value of $1670.50 – and this is earmarked for the Bring Back the Cannon Project. Meanwhile, the cannon is well looked after by the Seaworks Museum at Williamstown.

As well, the interactive Hotels of Clunes board, a popular feature of the “old” Museum, will be returning soon to the Permanent Exhibition. Thanks to Ian McFarlane for making this happen.

The ongoing program of conservation and preservation continues to grow. The magnificent 1902 Sarony photographic collage “Early Residents of Clunes” is a priority in 2020. Restoration and archival copying of the Holly Barkell wedding photo was done last year and restored to its former glory. Make sure you see it next time you visit.

Last year, the Museum improved its conservation practices as well as the handling and hanging of artworks. Craig Barrett, a Creswick conservator and artist, has been a most valuable source of advice and hands-on assistance. Thanks to Dot Keller for forging a vital professional relationship. This new level of expertise was reflected in last year’s special exhibition on Historic Buildings of Clunes in the Esmond Gallery and in the two exhibitions that have just finished. Thanks to the curators for putting on exhibitions at a busy time.

Both January exhibitions highlighted the importance of research in making sense of artefacts from a vanished past. The Organs of the Clunes exhibition was an opportunity to showcase the Museum’s impressive collection of church organs – and to research the part played by these overlooked instruments in community building and economic development in goldfield towns. Similarly, the “Brotherly Love” exhibition was an opportunity to highlight the impressively ornate certificates of the Friendly Societies – and to research those almost forgotten organizations. Who knew how well paid – comparatively – church organists were 150 years ago? Who knew there were so many Oddfellows, Foresters and Rechabites in C19th Clunes- let alone, Australian Natives and Sons of Temperance? If you missed these exhibitions, there will be articles on both in the next edition of the Museum’s newsletter, Discovery.

WE NEED YOU IN 2020

If you’ve been tempted to get involved, this is the year. If research is your preferred area, we have a very well organized archive. While family history research is our bread and butter, often we come across topics that deserve further

research and writing up as an article for the Museum’s newsletter, Discovery. For example, I was recently perusing on microfilm a March 1921 edition of the Clunes Guardian and Gazette newspaper and came across Rev. Smith of Clunes fulminating against “ the Big Fat Farmer who was not worth a straw to the town.” It turns out he was a prominent member of the CTL (Country Townspeople’s League), a now forgotten group responding to farmer politics in the 1920’s. Who knew about Rev. Smith or the CTL? Surely worth further research and writing up. Whatever your interest – whether its research, publications, cataloguing, conservation, exhibitions, grant writing, you name it - the Museum provides training and pays for courses. Your Museum needs you.

Australia Day Celebrations 2020 By Jane Lesock

To start the celebrations for Australia Day, a group of Clunes people attended the Civic Reception at Daylesford Town Hall for the Awards.

The Reception includes a Citizenship Ceremony followed by announcing the Hepburn Citizens of the Year and Community Event of the Year.

Through the CTDA, Linda Newitt was nominated for Citizen of the Year, Lachy Wrigley for “Young Citizen of the Year”, and the 2019 Clunes Ceramics was nominated for “Event of the Year” and pleased to say Lachy was named “Young Citizen” and Clunes Ceramics “Event of the Year. Congratulations to both. In the years these awards have been going, Clunes has had 7 Events, 4 Young Citizens & 8 Citizens named for Hepburn Shire Australia Day. A wonderful accolade to our many volunteers in Clunes, and to the CTDA who take the time and effort in nominating.

On a perfect morning the traditional Sunrise Walk up Mount Beckworth was well attended and upon descending; the hikers were rewarded with a breakfast of pancakes, tea and coffee. Thank you to Helen Hardy who has for 29 years has co-ordinated this part of Australia Day. Thank you Helen.

In the evening Collins Place was transformed for the free community celebration with marquees for shade, BBQ meats, drinks and flags were handed out for young and old.

CTDA President Steve Hunter welcomed everyone, and then the fun began with the local band “little Big” providing the entertainment for the night.

To conclude the formal part of the celebrations, Clunes Citizens of the Year, Linda Newittt & Steve Hunter lowered the flags.

Clunes Australia Day Co-ordinator, Megan Jones, who organised the evening and with many wonderful volunteers made it happen with setting up cooking and cleaning. Thanks to local businesses, IGA Supermarket, Longview Farm & Meats, Rose & Oak and Quigley & Clarke who helped out with the catering. Thanks Megan for your commitment to make it happen and to all the volunteers. THANK YOU ALL. An amazing effort and great night was enjoyed.

The Australia Day events are generously sponsored by the Hepburn Shire and auspiced by the Clunes Tourist & Development Association.

Call Out for Volunteers By Sharon Hughes

People of Clunes, it’ now 2020 which means your Clunes Booktown Festival is on the horizon! This year we have another amazing program lined up for the 2nd + 3rd of May, with an array of talented writers engaged to come to Clunes to entertain, wow, inspire and uplift us all. This year we are excited to be bringing you names like Andy Griffith - tell the kids! - Geoffrey Blainey, Chloe Hooper, Ross Garnaut, Bruce Venables and Fiona Hardy amongst others. As always, at the heart of your Clunes Booktown Festival, is 60+ book traders bringing you books of old and new. We are excited to share this with friends of the festival both well inducted and newly acquainted. We are calling for volunteers to help us make the festival a success again this year.

Every year we are humbled by the support from our community and this year we need help in the venues, at the gate, at the information desk and help with the mail out. We also need help in setting up and pulling down the marquees, along with helping with ticket sales at the authors talks in venues around the festival precinct. If you cannot help during the festival but would like to be involved, we are also looking for accommodation for some of our writers and authors. So if you have a spare room you could make available please contact us. We understand that many locals have friends or family staying with them over the weekend so please don’t feel obliged to make your house available.

We have been very lucky in past years to have had such amazing support from our local volunteers so if you have helped out in previous years we would greatly value your expertise again. If you are new to the area this is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in the community, meet long time locals and new residents alike, and have fun over the festival weekend while rubbing shoulders with some talented authors, writers and poets.

All volunteers are invited to our celebratory dinner at the Showgrounds on the Saturday evening. As always, many hands make fun and light work!

If you would like to volunteer please contact Sharon on 53453947 or [email protected]. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates on the festival #fortheloveofbooks

Clunes Crime Wrap Up 15th November 2019 up to 18th January 2020 By Athol Chaffey

Welcome back from the Xmas break peoples, I hope everyone had a great Xmas/New Year and all arrived home safe and well. If you went away (half your luck) I hope you had a good break.

November • Offender processed re a serious Assault. • Offender processed re theft from a shop in Fraser

Street.

December • 2 x Offenders processed re Arson at Queens Park. • Criminal Damage to large window at the IGA. • Offender processed re theft from a residential

property. • Offender processed re Criminal Damage at the

Caravan Park. • Offender processed re making threats to kill. • Offender processed re theft of a dog.

January • Theft of property from a residential property. • Criminal Damage to a fence of a residential property. • Burglary of a residential property.

As you can see, I’ve been busy processing various offenders in the past couple of months. Some have already been dealt with by the courts and some are still awaiting their day in court.

I am aware of the ongoing issues surrounding the ‘disputed land’ near the show grounds, all I can say is that there are several criminal matters that are before the courts in relation to same, so I would ask everyone to be very careful about Facebook Posts and interfering in matters that really don’t concern anyone. Like I said several people have been interviewed and charged with criminal matters over what really is a civil issue between two parties. Basically if you are not one of the 2 parties involved in the civil matters, just stay away from the area.

I have attended a few motor vehicle collisions over the past couple of months, I assume everyone will know now of the fatal collision that occurred on the Clunes-Mount Cameron Road at Mount Cameron in mid January. Please take care on the roads. Note that when this newsletter hits the streets, kids will be back at school, so keep an eye out for them and not really an issue in Clunes but if you’re going through to Ballarat watch out for the 40km/h zones around schools.

I am continuing to issue tickets in and around the town, speed, seat belts and mobile phone use, especially in the 60 km/h zones in Service Street, Victoria Street and Talbot Road. I have also issued quite a few tickets to vehicles that refuse to obey the STOP sign in Bailey Street at the intersection of Service Street (the intersection at the service station) as well as the STOP sign at West Street and Talbot

Road. These are two of the collision ‘blackspots’ in Clunes that I warned I would be targeting in the last newsletter.

Still conducting the “Coffee with the Copper” mornings, bit nicer now with warmer weather, thanks to the people that have called in and said g’day. I will continue to be at the Rotunda on the 3rd Friday of the

Month b/w 10 – 11 am, thank you to the businesses that have put the flyers in the window or noticeboard.

Until next newsletter, look after each other and stay safe …. As I always say I am YOUR local copper and can be contacted on station number 5345 3211, mobile number 0427 683 940, fax number 5345 3794 or email at [email protected]

Clunes Golf Club By Ray Skinner

Happy New Year from the Committee and Members of Clunes Golf Club. Santa has come and gone. Hoping everyone enjoyed their Christmas. All our very best to everyone for 2020. Our thoughts have very much been with the thousands of families across Australia affected by the horrific bushfires. In particular, all who have lost Loved Ones.

First Committee meeting for 2020 was held on the 12th. January, just after submitting this article. It is very much our intention to build on the great success we enjoyed throughout 2019. I will report on any significant news from the Committee in future months. In a change of roles we welcomed Ann Jones as our new Secretary and thanked Margaret Bird for her many years in this position. Margaret will remain on the Committee as Ann's assistant.

ORGANS of the BALLARAT

GOLDFIELDS By Jane Lesock

Clunes was very fortunate to have 2 Recitals on Tuesday 14th January. The first being in the Wesley Bluestone and second

held in St Paul’s Anglican Church with both Recitals booked out.

The CTDA have worked closely with the Organs Committee over many years, not only with Sponsorship but also to

ensure we get these revisits, Clunes is promoted and our retailers benefit. By the number of visitors, the

retailers that were open benefited greatly with the hospitality shown. All very positive.

Thanks to volunteers Sue & Karen who opened up The Warehouse (not normally open on a Tuesday) and had over

30 visitors for the day. Great effort.

Flyers promoting Clunes, Shops and other services were designed by Lily Mason, printed by Pete Billing and handed

out personally by Tess Brady & Gill Jedwab, giving visitors a warm welcome. Comments were made such as:

“Clunes is the only place that has done this” “Thank you so much, what a thoughtful idea”

“Great to see familiar smiling faces”

To assist the Organs committee, the CTDA do the setting and packing up of chairs at Wesley Bluestone. Thanks to our

helpers Gary Sharp, Ken Gibson & Peter Hanrahan.

All this effort is appreciated by the Organs Committee and we are assured they will continue coming to Clunes in the

future. Thanks to all involved – well done
