2 Presentation on Inception Report

24th September 2014 • Approach and Methodology Finalised • Finalised on survey plan and survey schedules

3 1st Stakeholder meeting 22nd November 2014

• Stakeholders insisted that the study should come out with proposals to address parking • More walkways and projects for pedestrianisation need to be considered • Few stakeholders also stressed on the needs for integrating land use with transport systems by providing outer ring roads outside the city limits and creating new CBDs outside Puducherry city and provision of other drivers of mobility such as schools and hospitals within the main residential areas. • As roads are narrow, mini buses instead of standard buses requires to be operated. Stakeholders insisted on introducing new public transport mode to convert all the polluting and unsafe shared auto plying in the city. • Apart from new railway line from Puducherry to Cuddalore, there are many other proposals such as doubling, electrification, etc., from Railways for the Puducherry region • Requirement of Truck terminal and Transport Nagar in the city was suggested by Lorry and LCV associations

S.No. Sector LOS Comments

1 Public transport facilities 2

The city has public transport system which may need

considerable improvements in terms of supply of buses /

coaches and coverage as many parts of the city are not

served by it. The frequency of the services available need

improvements. The system provided is comfortable.

2 Pedestrian infrastructure facilities 2

The city has pedestrian facilities which may need

considerable improvements. The pedestrian facilities at

intersections, availability of footpath etc. needs

improvements as many parts of the city are not served by

it.

3 Non-Motorized Transport

(NMT)facilities 4 The city lacks adequate NMT facilities.

4 Level of usage of Intelligent

Transport System (ITS) facilities 4 The city lacks adequate ITS facilities.

5 Travel speed (Motorized and Mass

Transit) along major corridors 3

Small increase in flow may cause substantial increases in

approach delay and hence, decrease in arterial speed.

6 Availability of parking spaces 4

The city authorities need to initiate immediate actions with

respect to providing paid parking spaces and demand

management for parking.

7 Road Safety 4

Need considerable improvements in Road design and

available road infrastructure, traffic management and in

other such reasons which significantly contribute to road

safety.

Development of Truck Terminal Assignment of Goods Vehicle – Base Year

The main objectives of a truck terminal are: • To reorganise office and godown space of transport

companies • To provide for expansion of companies • To reduce parking, loading/unloading instances in CBD • To locate the facilities for vehicle repairs, servicing, rest

places, shops etc. • To cater to intercity movements destined to operator’s

godown and provide for idle parking for trucks • Waiting for return load. • To function as a rest and halting place for through

traffic.

Development of Truck Terminal at Sedrapet

• Within an area of 75 acres • Capacity: 2500 truck parking space by 2036 • To be developed in Phases – Phase 1 for 1500 parking space • Phase 2: 2000 parking space • Phase 3: 2500 parking space

Access to Fish Landing Areas and Fishing Harbour

Fishing is the major primary sector of economy in Puducherry

It is a perishable good, it is to be transported as soon as possible.

Fish loading and unloading from boats to LCVs is usually done during 2.00 AM to 6.00 AM.

Better and quicker access to the harbour or fish landing center to storage unit or major road would help in transporting fish quickly.

Access from following centres to be improved

• Kanagachettikulam • Periyakalpet • Chinnakalpet • Pillaichavady • Solai nagar • Vaithikuppam • Kurusukuppam • Vambakeerapalayam

• Fishing Harbour • Periyaveerampattinam • Chinnaverrampattinam • Pudukuppam • Nallavadu • Pannithittu • Narambai • Moorthikuppam
