Pueblo bubbles over with assets, from its energetic nightlife to its rich culture and heritage. But perhaps the city’s most attractive qualities can be found in its beautiful lakes and rivers, which offer endless recreation opportunities under year-round sunny skies.

Lake Pueblo State Park is the most visited state park in Colorado. The lake features more than 60 miles of shoreline and 4,500 acres of surface water.

“The Pueblo Reservoir has great paddling with lots of coves and wildlife. And going down the Arkansas River to town is about a 10-mile stretch of beautiful paddling almost year-round.” – Bob Walker, owner of The Edge Ski, Paddle and Pack store.

Pueblo water-sports enthusiasts flood downtown Pueblo’s Whitewater Park on the Arkansas River with activity. The area teems with kayakers, boaters, waterskiers and … surfers? Yes, surfers.

“Pueblo is the surfing capital of Colorado.” – Chad Parson, an experienced river surfer and founder of the Colorado River Surfing Association.

“The waves never close out, never get to shore – it really is an endless ride.” – The Edge’s Bob Walker

“It’s a great sport for both men and women. Even kids as young as 10 or 12 can start out on a body board … Anyone who wants to learn can go to The Edge and talk to Bob or just come on down to the river – anyone there is willing to help anytime.” – Tina Sotelo, a Pueblo resident

“Pueblo is a great town. They’re showing the world what can be done with our rivers to make them enjoyable for all.” – Chad Parson

Pueblo’s beautiful scenery and temperate climate are favorable for mountain biking. The Greenway and Nature Center of Pueblo offer excellent biking trails.

The Southern Colorado Trail Builders – a nonprofit organization whose goal is to preserve and develop mountain biking trails in the Pueblo area – work closely with the Colorado State Park Service to ensure mountain bikers will have plenty of trails to enjoy in the future.

A $6.5 million habitat restoration project has transformed nine miles of the Arkansas River – from below Pueblo Dam to Fountain Creek – into a bona fide trout stream with a half-mile-long white-water-boating course at the lower end. The habitat project was designed primarily to alter the river channel to provide protection for fish year-round.

200,000visitors

The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo is a scenic place to stroll along the riverfront or take a relaxing pontoon boat ride while learning about local heritage. “The boat rides are the main attraction at the Riverwalk,” says Erin Regrutto, director of marketing and special events for the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo. “Every boat has a captain who gives an overview of the history of Pueblo and the Riverwalk.”

The Riverwalk is a $24 million project that opened in 2000 and has served as a catalyst for the revitalization of downtown Pueblo. It attracted more than 200,000 visitors during its first year and continues to be a popular downtown recreation spot. “A lot of events are held at the Riverwalk throughout the year,” Regrutto says. “An outdoor farmers’ market offers food and entertainment in the summer. And there is outdoor entertainment every Friday and Saturday night from May to September.”
