President’s Message:

Thank You! And Please By Chris Kirsop

Editor’s note: Chris Kirsop was elected president of the Puget Sound Chapter board, effective Oct. 1, 2015. He succeeds Mike Torbenson.

Hello fellow BetterInvesting members, In my first President’s Message since be-ing elected to this position, I would like to take this opportunity to convey two mes-sages. The first message is intended to be a huge and public “thank you” to our chapter’s current and past volunteers, board mem-bers and officers. Before I became a mem-ber of the Board of Directors, I had no idea how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep our chapter healthy and functioning smoothly. We are truly fortu-nate to be the beneficiary of all of your efforts.

The second message is to everyone else who is a current member of our chapter. Please consider, and you don’t have to answer right now, contributing a small amount of your time as a volunteer with our chapter. Our chapter currently boasts a membership of 1,368 and of those, 21 of our members are now volunteering to varying degrees. That leaves a vast re-source still remaining that I would like to try and tap into over the course of the next several months. Most of us have more demands on our time than we are able to fit into our lives. I have no doubt that is the case with all of you. The Puget Sound Chapter could use your help at various times throughout the year but we will not be asking for a life-altering commitment. You can start small

IEC REPORT — P AGE 3

Another Great IEC in 2015 The 2015 Investors Education Conference, held Nov. 6 and 7 at a new venue near Sea-Tac airport, was another huge success that garnered rave reviews. Here are some of the comments from participants: “It gets me re-motivated every year, just to be around others talking about investing.” “This conference is always so rejuvenating and I leave with more knowledge and understanding.” “Outstanding lectures and a diversity of investment topics means here is something for everyone.” “I can’t imagine how you can put on a conference of such outstanding value for only $95.” Thanks to the hardworking committee that organized the event: Bob Adams, CV Chung, Bruce Ellis, Diane Ellison, Jackie Hertel, Marisol Summers, Bev Tiedje and Mike Torbenson. Also a big thanks to our prime sponsor, Realty Income. Their lunchtime presentation on REITs received high praise from attendees. Longtime Puget Sound Chapter associate director and volunteer CV Chung was recognized for his service to the chap-ter and to the IEC. CV is the chapter’s “venue procurer extraordinaire.” He finds and reserves venues for all of the chapter’s activities — classes, the IEC, board meetings and other special meetings and events — and then negotiates contracts, arranges meals, room set-up and more. It is a big job that CV handles with incredible skill and grace.

New One-Day IEC for 2016 Save the Date: November 12

Your IEC committee has recom-mended and the Board has approved a new concept. We hold an Alaskan cruise every two years and this year’s cruise will be September 10-17. Since the Novem-ber IEC is held very shortly after the cruise, we’ve decided to try a ONE-DAY IEC on the years that there is a cruise and go back to our usual two-day event on the “off cruise” years. Our facilities volunteer has found the Coast Hotel in Bellevue to be the best choice this year and they can accommodate us on Saturday, No-vember 12. It will still be a jam- packed education day with six class hours and five classes each hour for a total of 30 hours with no duplica-tion. Instructors, class schedules, and that very important item, the cost, are yet to be worked out, but be assured it will be a value rich event.

Pictured above with chapter President Chris Kirsop are Bill and Kathy Ward of the Forward Investments club, first-place winner of the 2015 Club Portfolio Contest, with a five-year return of 22 percent. This is a family club, with three generations now participating. They have placed in the top three in the portfolio contest in each of the three years they have entered – 2nd in 2014 and 3rd in 2013. The club is based in the Tacoma area.

P AGE 4 — CHAPTER NEWS

The biggest and most important role of the Puget Sound Chapter is to provide quality education to its members. When a chapter finds a board member whose passion is both teaching and class development, it is doubly blessed. The Puget Sound is fortunate to have found such a person in Mike Torbenson, who has been honored with the Blue Chip Award for outstanding service to the chapter.

The previous year’s honoree, Bev Tie-dje, nominated Mike and presented him with the award at the chapter’s an-nual meeting in September 2015. Mike started teach-ing for our chapter in 2005 and joined

the board in 2007. Since then he has played an active role in all our education activities, ranging from core classes to our Investor Education Conference to free classes at the chapter’s annual planning meeting.

In 2010, Mike was elected vice president of education for chapter. In that role he redesigned and updated our core class materials, ensuring that what we teach is up to date and relevant. He not only worked on the quality and con-tent of our classes, he teaches many of them as well, in-cluding many IEC classes. His IEC tasks have also included determining which classes will be offered, finding teach-ers to teach them and scheduling them at the event – a huge job! In 2014, Mike served the same role for our first-ever cruise to Alaska, where he was instrumental in developing a set of 42 classes, 10 of which he also taught. Mike has also taken on club visits, often teaching our clas-ses as club classes. In October 2014, Mike was elected chapter president, and despite the many new tasks that role requires, he contin-ued to be actively involved in chapter education pro-grams.

This chapter has been extremely fortunate to have Mike

as a team member all these years, working tirelessly on

behalf of our members. Thank you Mike!

Here’s a “2fer” loaded with rewards. This year’s BetterIn-vesting National Convention (BINC) will be held in Chantil-ly, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. Why not com-bine an outstanding educational opportunity with a chance to spend a few extra days and visit the nation’s capital? You can see where lawmakers decide how to spend your taxes, dozens of historical sites and museums, and the National Zoo to see the newest attraction, baby panda Bei Bei. BINC is a great place to increase your investing knowledge with friends old and new. This year’s BINC will offer more than 65 class sessions on a variety of topics for investors of all levels. The convention favorites are the panels of edu-cators sharing stock ideas. You will go home with new stocks to study. Enjoy meeting people from other chapters and getting to

know our National Better Investing staff. They are a friendly bunch who make a point of meeting personally with the attendees. Go to www.betterinvesting.org/biconvention for BINC de-tails and registration.

MODEL CLUB & SPECIAL INTEREST WORKSHOPS — PAGE 5

A model club attempts to “model” a well-run invest-ment partnership. Employing BetterInvesting best practices, the club members (partners) invest real money. The Puget Sound Model Investment Club (PSMIC) is about three years old and has approxi-mately $7,000 invested in eight stocks. The club usually meets on the third Thursday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. Most meetings are held online. This makes it possible for a diverse group of partners to meet no matter where they are as long as they have a high speed Internet connection. The club also meets in person four times a year. Visitors are encouraged to join us to observe a

“typical” club as long as they don’t interrupt the meeting. We address visitor questions at the end of the meeting or through email. Some visitors simply want to learn more about how a club operates. Some may be inspired to start their own club. Those al-ready in a club can learn different methods. Several PSMIC partners are BetterInvesting volun-teers with extensive investment club experience. Each meeting includes either an industry study, an educational segment or other learning experience. See schedule below for upcoming meetings. Look for links in our monthly email newsletter to register for the online meetings.

and leave it at that if you would like to. Or bask in the warmth of the ever-increasing appreciation you will re-ceive for your efforts if you choose to expand your role. If the remaining 1,347 members of our chapter were to be able to volunteer just five hours per year, that would be the equivalent of 168 full-time work weeks. Think of what your Puget Sound Chapter could do to fur-ther the mission and the principles of BetterInvesting with that kind of support. So, please consider leaving yourselves open to the possibility of helping your chapter in some way. We will work on presenting you with some opportunities to do so in the coming months.
