On Wednesday, September 15, Kevin Shumate, on behalf of the elders, presented a plan of action…a course of work…a direction formovingahead(whateveryouwishtocallit)forourcongregation. This is some exciting stuff! This has come as the result of many, many hours of work and discussion and planning. It has come on theheelsofmuchinstructionanddiscussionandinputfromyouas the congregation. You know that over the past couple of years wehavespentsomeconcentratedeffortonourthird-Wednesdaynights taking a look at what we are doing and what we could be doingbothindividuallyasChristiansandasachurchfamilyandcongregation. Remember…each one of us, as Christians, are ministers. We are servants, and we are to be about the business of ministry (serving).Adirectresultoftheseeffortshasbeensomenewareasof work (Welcome/Bread Ministry, Helping Hands, Sequoyah ElementarySchoolPartnership)aswellasincreasedinvolvementfrommanymembers.ThisisFANTASTIC! Now it’s time to continue to move forward. Kevin’s presen-tation had to do with an overall view of the works and ministries of this congregation. These have been identified, overall expectations listed, and even leadership expectations defined. Now, two things needtohappen.Oneisthateverymemberneedstogivethoughtfulandprayerfulconsiderationtowhereyoucanbestserve.Theotherneed is for leaders in all of these areas of work. Be praying about this. Also, we will have an upcoming Sunday in which we will take an even closer look into the plans for the work of this congregation andhowyoucanbeapartofthat. Our next big event, and actually our biggest annual event, is the upcoming Friends and Family Day, Sunday, October 10. Who AM I?David Deffenbaugh
WhoamI? What is more, how do you know who I am? Now, this could get pretty philosophical very quickly. Let’s steer away from that. One way that people attempt to let others know who they are – and I’m sure Henry Ford never saw this coming – is through the vehicle they drive. I’m not talking about the kind they drive necessarily; although some people do use the make and model of their car as a form of self-expression, albeit an expensive one. Instead, I’m referring to what is placed on the bumpers and back windows of their automobiles. Just by looking at the some people’s vehicles from behind you may learn their religious viewpoints, their political leanings, their hobbies and in-terests, their dislikes, and even (this is a new one to me) their sexual preference (Isurehopethisonedoesn’tcatchon). There are, of course, other ways that we can (and should) learn who a person is. The Christian needs to know the appropriate means by which their identityiscommunicated. The identifying mark of one being a Christian, a child of God, is that God’s own Spirit dwells in them and they are then led by that Spirit. We re-ceive the Spirit when we become a Christian (Acts 2:38). The fact that we are a Christian (God’s child) means God’s Spirit leads us. “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Rom. 8:14). Understand that this does not mean what many people try to make it mean. This has nothing to do with speaking in tongues, ecstatic experiences, oranythingmiraculous.Whatisitthen? The affect of one’s being led by the Spirit is unmistakable. The Bible says it is the presence of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithful-ness, gentleness, and self-control in that person’s life (Gal. 5:22-23). This is commonly known as the “Fruit of the Spirit.” In other words, this is the fruit borne in the life of one led by God’s Spirit. Just as obvious is the evidence of one who is not led by the Spirit, and thus not a child of God. The Bible says that if the Spirit does not lead us, we are left only to fulfill the desire of the flesh (Gal. 5:16). This is quite “evident” (“obvious” NIV; “manifest” KJV). What does this look like? It is shown in immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, ca-rousing, “and things like these” (Gal. 5:19-21). It really isn’t that hard to know who someone is. But the back of their car is not the place to look. What kind of life do they live? That is how you cantell.

Joyce and I havebeenblessedwithourninthcamping year at Burnt Cab-in. January 2002, we loaded one large U-Haul truck and twotrailers inOregonand pointed them towardOklahoma. Joyce refers to thewinter trip through theWyoming mountain passasahair-raisingexperienceand I look back on it as an adventure. We both knew we would love the camp; we just did not know how much. Sometimes we are asked ifitisworthallthosehourspreparingthemeals, maintaining the pool and canteen. Our answer is a resounding “yes”. Lest we forget: the reasonthecampexistsistopreach the Gospel. Year after year the Gospel is preached and the church of the fu-ture is born not of flesh and blood but of the Spirit ofGod. Some have asked what

But rest assured, if the Lord is willing, and a few sacrifices are made, there will be another building project that will make the camp more desirable to more children so God’s wordcanbetaughtandpreachedtohungryyoung receptive minds.”
Our ninth camping year wasanother successful adventure to God we give the glory. We thank all of you who have supported us over the years, may God blessyouall.

DID You KNoW?Dick and Joyce Higginbotham
“We spent our summers swimming inthe river.” That was Dick’s statement about him and his 8 siblings. They grew up in Hominy, OK, not too far from the Arkansas River. Joyce echoedthesamecommentforherandherbroth-er who grew up in Taft, Texas right next to the SanJacintoRiver. Richard Glenn “Dick” Higginbotham joined the Navy and spent most of his time pack-ing parachutes, including the one he used to jump from an airplane. His time on the aircraft carrier took him from Japan to Bermuda and most of the islands in-between. During this time, Aleta
Joyce Branch was going to school at Abilene Christian College in Texas. She was getting her degree in Speech and Theatre, thoroughly enjoying act-ingandset-building. When Dick got out of the Navy, he used his GI bill to become a pilot. While working in a printing shop where Joyce’s dad was foreman, he met Joyce, who worked there also. Dick asked Joyce to take a ride in the plane with him. Joyce says, “He asked me to help him watch out for other planes. There wasn’t anyone in the sky but us!” They got married in 1957. Dick bought a fabric plane, and took turns moving the wings (and then the fuselage) back and forth to their living room to work on. “It was a small house”, Dick commented. “And we’re still married”, Joyce returned. Yes, they are; for 53 years. When their children were in school, Joyce worked as a teachers’ aide in the school, which was a joy for her. Dick remembers that piloting the plane for each of his children’s first plane ride was a time that was really special for him. Their daughter, Peggy, and grandson, Kyle, are a part of our congregation and 2 more children, 3 grandchildren, and 8 great-grand-childrenareinTexas. From watching Joyce each day, you would assume her hobby is serving others. She stays so busy at that, it would seem she has little time for knitting, but she does that also. Dick enjoys fishing and hunting which he not only does here in OK., but also goes to Canada and Alaska. Themostexcitingtripforthemhasbeenthetwotimestheywereable to go to the Ukraine on the mission trip. These two seem to keep flying high, even with their feet on the ground.
comebewithus.Spousesofteachersarecertainly invited as well. Please RSVP with the church office. OurSundaymorningstudiesfrom1 & 2 Timothy and Titus have brought to our attention the necessity for “sound” doc-trine. Paul also speaks of doctrine that is not “sound.” When he does so, a subtle, yet important change takes place. He speaks of “strange doctrines” and “doctrines of
demons” (1 Tim. 1:3; 4:1). Did you catch it? Sound doctrine is always spoken of as singular, all other doctrine is plural. The importantpointhereisthatdoctrinethatcomes from God, doctrine that is true and sound (literally healthful), is one. Have you ever heard someone ask about or talk about “church of Christ doctrine”? It’s as if they are thinking that everychurchhasit’sowndistinctdoctrine– that is there are many different doctrines – and that is OK. Well, it may be true thatdifferingdoctrinesdodistinguishonegroup form another, but it is definitely not OK. Far from it. If the doctrine to which I hold, and believe, practice and proclaim is not the “sound” (true) doctrine of God found in the Bible, then I am embracing some-thing else. What Paul calls “strange” and demonic. Obviously, I dare not be found by God promoting, teaching, encouraging, or even tolerating anything but “sound” doctrine.
