Why is the work in this booklet important to complete?

You will be working with a professional fashion designer whose work will inspire our own designs. In this booklet you will be introduced to fashion design and apply your knowledge of sustainability to garment design.

Task 1

Self-Assessment

Complete a self-assessment for your designs from the last

booklet.

You must use the success criteria. Write two areas of success

and two areas for development.

Success Criteria:

“One of the projects I am most proud of is my Dior project,

which I was selected to participate in at the V&A event

"Fashion in Motion: Dior Designer of Dreams" in February

2019”

Dior

“Dior’s inspiration behind his designs were the memories of his mother and the garden he grew up in. My inspiration was my mother, the clothing that would she would wear. She would wear loose fitting clothes where the material would drape. The design is also based on the books I read about women and how women lose their identity, playing a role and women who suffer from depression. I feel that my mother lost her identity playing her role as a mother. I also looked at work by Dior in the 50s and mimicked that style in a contemporary way.”

Christopher Kane

“Here I made a dress for Christpher Kane for London fashion week, you can see it on the catwalk in the picture above. It was a very stressful experience, the timings were strict and it was very busy, but it was extremely rewarding! Initially, I didn’t know if I could do this but I worked hard through the challenges and overcame them. I really enjoyed working for Christopher Kane and I worked on multiple projects for this designer.”

NIKE

“NIKE asked me to work with a new material called E-Leather which are

leather scraps blended together. This an eco-friendly material, as we are

using material which would normally be discarded. NIKE wants to be a

sustainable brand. They are looking at different approaches to zero waste, to

transform, reuse and use biodegradable materials. The garments didn’t

require any stitching so no sewing machines were necessary. The E-Leather

was laser cut and the pieces connected together rather than sewing them

together. In this project we wanted to promote a connection with the

garments you are wearing. The idea is that if you make it yourself, you will be

more attached to what you are wearing and will be less likely to get rid of it,

minimising waste. People will also realise the amount of work that goes into

constructing a garment.”6

Design Brief:

As you know, NIKE is looking for new ways to be more sustainable. You have been hired by NIKE to design a sustainable garment inspired by sports. The garment must be made from recycled materials.
