The Pecos River & SaltBeneath the Pecos River, in southeastern New Mexico, lies billions of gallons of pure sea salt water put there millions of years ago when the earth was formed.

In the 1950s it was discovered that more than 250 tons of salt per day was entering the Pecos River through a fissure (crack) in the earth in the form of salt water (brine). The salt then flowed down the Pecos River into the Redbluff Reservoir where it polluted the water used by towns and farmers in Texas.

In the 1960s the U.S. Government developed a solution to the problem. They drilled a water well next to the fissure and pumped it until it relieved the pressure pushing the salt water into the river.

In 2005, Southwest Salt Company was formed to carry on this work. We have constructed 6 state-of-the-art evaporate ponds to separate the water and salt. Then we harvest the salt, wash, dry, and size it to use as various types of salt, either bagged or in bulk, for water softening or pool salt.

So, the salt we sell, unlike all other salt companies, is neutral to the environment because we capture the salt that was going to pollute the water and use it for the salt needs of the Midwest.
