About PuriPuri is located on the eastern side of India in the province of Orissa. Lying on the coastal strip inthe Puri district, the destination is 60 kilometre from the city of Bhubaneswar. This coastal citylies on the golden triangle of Orissa, connecting with Konark and Bhubaneswar.

The city of Puri is known for its historic immemorial, sanctorum, architectural magnificence, balanced climate and divine significance. Counted among the most sacred pilgrim centres forHindus in India, the destination is a seat of Lord of Universe, Jagannath, as per testimony ofSkanda Purana. Honoured with the famous Jagannath shrine, the spiritual city is also known asJagannath Puri. Positioned along the coast of Bay of Bengal, the city is one of the frequentedtourist destinations in India.

All the cities of the triangular axis have well-known pilgrimage venues, exotic landscapes, beaches, historical sites that attract travellers throughout the year. Besides, the destination is arepository of art and architecture of India with testaments dating back to 3rd century B.C. Thisancient town has ruins and testaments belonging to the period from 3rd century B.C. to 17thcentury A.D.

The spiritual city attracts devotees along with tourists from around the world for witnessingattractions like Temple of Child Krishna at Indradyumna Tank, Atharnala Bridge and SudarshanCrafts Museum. The city also has the famous Sun Temple of Konark.

One of the major highlights of the city is Rath Yatra (Car or Chariot festival), which is hostedevery year in the city. Puri Rath Yatra 2012 starts on 21st June at Jaganath Temple, Puri,Orissa. The festival marks the journey of Krishna known as Jaganath in this region, from Gokulto Mathura. Three huge chariots carrying the idols of Jaganath, his brother Balbadra, and hissister Subhadra are pulled along the streets from the Jaganath temple to the temple ofGundicha Mandir. On the ninth day, Rath Yatra is repeated in the opposite direction. Pilgrimsand tourists throng to the destination to cherish the international event besides an annual PuriBeach Festival held in the month of November.

The coastal city gained fame after Chodaganga Deva who built the temple of PurusottamaJagannath after winning a war. Over the years, association with Lord Rama, influencedrenaming of city to Purusottama Kshetra, also known as Purusottama Puri, which exists as Puriat present.

Among well-known attractions in and around, Puri features Chilka Lake, a large inland salt-water lake, Puri Beach, Gundicha Ghar and the Childlike Wildlife Sanctuary. Over the years, thecoastal city has emerged as an industrial centre with major industries like rice milling, handicrafts and fish curing.

The pleasant weather of the coastal city all round the year makes it an ideal destination for thetravellers. With mild summers and cool winters, October to March is considered the best time to

Featured review about PuriGlorious sunrise and a colourful sunset at one go from the same place"Puri, once the only beach destination of middle class in eastern India has now blossomed intoa luxurious beach resorts of eastern India. The hotels which were used to be very cost friendlyfor middle class now charges not much but you have to spend more for a nice stay in the hotelson the beach itself. We reached Puri at about 11 at night by Shatabdi express from Howrah andwas picked up by the car sent from our hotel. Up to this much the service of the hotel was good. The room given was a nice one to stay but only glitch was it was on the 2nd floor which wasdifficult for us to climb every time as there was no lift in that building. The view from there wassuperb but the counter executives were not much helpful.

The puri beach is one of the best beaches to walk on & now with all sorts of entertainmentattached the beach was overcrowded all over the day. You can have a camel ride like in Juhu, can visit one of the best sand craft exhibition on the beach & in the evening there's an openmarket of shell handicrafts on the beach. I have visited Puri several times over the years butthis time I felt it too crowded even during night when I could see several vagabonds takingshelter under the open sky & making their daily habits completed on the beach. These thingshave to be stopped immediately otherwise the beach will lost its immense beauty of easyaccess for all strata of people. But still now this is the only beach for everyone to have a nicebath.

Puri sea offers you the glorious sunrise and a colourful sunset at one go from the same place.Everyone came here several times only for its easy access from all corners of the country, asalso because of GREAT JAGANNATH TEMPLE here. As also for renowned sightseeing likeKonark, Bhubaneswar, etc, Puri offers you different places to visit for experiencing dolphins.Visit Satapada, a dolphin breeding place and also the opening of Chilika lake with Bay ofBengal. Other places like Gopalpur on sea, Borbil, etc. But you can spend days only with a walkalong the sea coast every morning witnessing the sunrise." - Partha Guhathakurta, , 1month ago

A collage of all colours, local-enthusiasm and tradition in vast development"If you are a sea-lover and your list of travel destinations has covered most of India's famouscoastal regions and sea beaches, you just can't help but visit to Puri, where in surplus you alsoget to visit the temple of Lord Jagannatha - in Puri offers an all-in one package. The small townof Puri has developed round the coast of the Bay of Bengal, & the tourist zone, the hotels &lodges have consequently raised orienting the beach. The famous Puri-beach is thus a

Page 3/14

lodges have consequently raised orienting the beach. The famous Puri-beach is thus ajuxtaposition of peace & chaos - in other words Puri offers an all encompassing vista - the vast, broad sea of complete serenity in one hand and on its shore the chaotic & congestedpopulation on the other - creating a remarkable combination of contrasts. & in my every visit, while entering Puri, the first look of the expansive sea in contrast to the crowd used to leave meawestruck.

The Puri beach is thoroughly sandy and long to which the main road runs parallel. This roadserves as entrance to puri, links to the most bustling Swargadwar area and also leads to otherimportant places around. One can find a lot of activities in and around the beach and nearbyregions in Puri. The beach itself is full of amusement & enthusiasm - with stalls, permanent &temporary selling everyday stuffs, crockery & stationery materials and fanciful items made ofsea-shell - the permanent shops mostly lining up the main-road. As for food, one can easily findregular stuffs every where and in the beach all kinda beverages like cold drinks and fresh greencoconut water (which to me is the best to quench the thirst & stay cool), all street & junk foodslike peas, masala/spicy puffed-rice etc.

Unlike other coastal regions and sea shores, Puri has an aura of simplicity and homelyatmosphere about it and hence has always been a favourite hotspot and comfort destination forfamily travellers - as for me and my family, our visit in last July has been the 5th time.

Again if you are not to travel much to the suburbs for sightseeing & is here to have a completerelaxed holiday, the best is to chill out in the beach. You are no way to feel bore - even if youare not into it, your time will fly looking into the life & vivacity around & one would absolutely lovethe evening fair of the beach. The fair is not similar to the typical exotic beach carnivals and itcarries a local flavor, local atmosphere and ambiance - from selling out beautiful handicraftitems of seashell & canes, it has it all. But to me the most luring is the food items like the friedfish fillets of pomfret, snipper etc & the hot pickles served along. After all, the smell of salt water, the salty snacks and sea fishes together make a nice combo.

Puri market a shops is also platform of showcasing some of Puri's rich heritage, tradition & ageold culture. So the hand-looms and handicraft museum in Puri is worth visiting, not only forshopaholics but for all to experience.

Puri beach is crowded at almost anytime except at post afternoon when the crowd beginthinning out (though this time should better be avoided for the general heat) again people startgathering during sundown to the sunset view - too astounding to give that a miss. & there blowsthe cool breeze to be felt and get swayed away.

Like most, I too have some fond memories of Puri and family outings there in the beach -playing with sand, some futile attempts at sand-art, crying for some ice cream chunks to soothein the sun and many such. And now there are other entertainments arranged to increase thefun factor - like horse-ride, parks & camel rides. The camel ride I had last time was an amazingone.

Page 4/14

But above these all, the fun to face the large waves, to skip & jump with it, to bathe till you drop& when drenched to get heavy with the weight of the sand particles all over your body isincomparable - these give all time experience which never lets Puri become old, boring orredundant.

As mentioned above Puri can also be taken as pilgrimage for the Hindus for its well knownJagannath temple. Even if you are not religious, this ancient shrine with intricate art works andan aura of spirituality has a power to draw you there. Yet again this is also over crowded andgetting a glimpse of the mighty God will make you feel fortunate and blessed. The 'dhoja' - aceremony of soaring the flag at the top of the dome to fly high is a sight to witness!

Puri has many other temples and the suburban regions have numerous others - of whichKonark - the Sun temple stands first. A visit to it can only explain what it feels to experiencesuch a heritage sight - what ancient culture and rich history it bears with it that means a lot eventoday. Others like Udayagiri-Khandagiri temples, Dhaulagiri (the Buddhist shrine - as 'Ango' hasbeen a site of flourishing Buddhism under king Asoka' s influence) are also mention-worthy.And if you take some hour's journey, you can reach Bhubaneswar - the city of temples to visitLingaraj temple of lord Siva.

Puri has small hills and rivers and lakes in its suburban regions - river Mahanadi,Chandrabhaga- its tributaries and R. Dayal (which most comes across on their way toDhaulagiri) make some good tourist spots nowadays (which we visited last time). Among lakesChilika lake are some tourist tour's attraction. Though our journey by a boat, exposed in the sundidn't intrigue me the first 2 times, but the last trip was rejoicing enough - as it was mid July andin the drizzle we could spot some hopping Dolphins and huge eager Swans. The Jawbone inthe island amid the wide Chilka lake and the fishermen' net in it seemed interesting to me. TheChandrabhaga sea beach is also amazing and offers a distinct taste - comparatively lesscrowded and more entertaining & is slowly being a craze for tourists now.

One of my favourite sightseeing in and near Puri which I made sure to visit in last few trips isRamchandi. Not far, but still away from the bustle and crowd where you find the broadness andopenness of the sea at its best and the temple of Hanuman with a primitive charm to match withoverall serenity and old undisturbed charm of the place." - Samriddha Roy, Kolkata, Apr 1,2015
