SOLVINGPROBLEMS

It’s our responsibility to take the knowledge we have and use it for the better of the people around us. If we are not solving problems in our design, then we are creating a wasteful product.

WHY FORD?

RYAN TYLER QUADRUPLE AMPUTEE

Creating cars with a purpose has been a long term goal of Ford and now we can customize our brand to a specific demographic. Recognizing that there is a large group of people missing out on basic opportunities was a problem we saw and hope to come to a resolution. The future of driving is here and is being equipped and customized for your needs. Inside the Ford Pursuit are two computer systems that communicate with the 360

Auto-Sensor to navigate the vehicle. The first computer is located in a department in the rear of the vehicle (accessible in the trunk). The second computer, located in the center console, is accessible from the drivers seat and can be used by the front seat passenger as well. Both computers communicate back and forth while receiving information from the 360 Auto-Sensor.

WHY IT MATTERSCreating cars with a purpose has been a long term goal of Ford and now we can customize our brand to a specific demographic. Recognizing that there is a large group of people missing out on basic opportunities was a problem we saw and hope to come to a resolution. By giving people accessibility to drive, we hope to accomplish 3 simple goals:

20% of the population is disabled

68% of disabled would be able to use the Pursuit

75% of disabled are reliant on transportation

1 in 44 people are legally blind. 1 in 20 children under the age of 5 begin to show signs of irreversible vision impairment.

1 in 120 people are physically disabled

1 in 38 elderly restrict their driving because of fear of getting into an accident.

Addressing the varied demographics that could benefit from the Pursuit, visually impaired, physically disabled, and elderly would be the best fit candidates for owning this car. There is a large number of people that could be effected by the ability to use their own transportation.

Legal blindness is the leading disability that restricts people from driving. Those who do not qualify for surgery or who have irre-versible damages are left dependent on others.

Amputees and other handicapped people account for 47% of disabilities, which makes this group one of the biggest to benefit from the Ford Pursuit.

The dangers of driving increases as one grows older, especially with genetic disorders in brain illness. The elderly cause approxi-mately 18% of pedestrian fatalities.

THEREVOLUTION

Creating a revolution is what Ford’s history is started with. Today, we are striving to make more advances in automotive technology.

The future of driving is here and is being equipped and customized for your needs. Inside the Ford Pursuit are two computer systems that communicate with the 360 Auto-Sensor to navigate the vehicle. The first computer is located in a department in the rear of the vehicle (accessible in the trunk). The second computer, located in the center console, is accessible from the drivers seat and can be used

by the front seat passenger as well. Both computers communicate back and forth while receiving information from the 360 Auto-Sensor. The user friendly computer system has various menu options including, GPS navigation, car settings, and Pursuit car diagnostics, along with much more. From this touch-screen computer, the driver can control everything from speed to turn controls.

Standard with the Pursuit are the latest technology physically embedded into the car. Front to back and top to bottom, we considered every aspect of how to make this car elite in communication, safety and function.

These sensors adjusts to terrain such as slick and rocky roads. Traction sensors also assess turns and adjust to inclines and declines, while maintaining an appropriate speed.

Offers superior side protection in the event of a crash. As well as creating shock absorbers for the cars framework. This feature also protects the car’s computers, but more importantly, the people inside the car.

Rotating at high speeds, the Auto-Sensor detects and assesses objects and situational events in the car’s environment and allows the computer to respond appropriately.

MORE INFORMATION

COMPUTERSYSTEMThe Pursuit’s specialized computer system was developed specifically for navigation and safety. Working in unison, the computers within the car register information from satellites and its own sensors. The Pursuit’s computer systems can be controlled through the simple, user friendly touch screen in the front of the car. Various menu options can take you from navigating your route to checking over the diagnostics of your car. Located at the top left is an audio version of the

menu, which allows users to control the car’s programming through voice recognition.

Pursuit navigation can show a range of street views from graphic, 3D, and satellite photos.

Car diagnostics are easy to access and tell you basic information about your car as well as more detailed stats and numbers. Here, the computer will warn you to change your oil, change your tire pressure, and much more.

Computer diagnostics are also available on this page and tell you how your computer is running. Here stats on the speed of computer processing is logged and sent to Ford Service Headquarters, where if any problem is detected, you are informed immediately.

GPS navigation options can also be listed out or can be given through audio.

Other options include changing the car over into manual driving and the emergency stop option, where the car pulls over at the next safest area.

The Home Screen directs you to several features that allow you to navigate a route, go to your current location, view car diagnostics, view your general settings, make calls, and receive help.

FIND THEMOTIVE

Everyone’s reason for trying out the Ford Pursuit is different. Whether it be to change your life, or the lives around you. Finding the motive to embrace this phenomenal technology is up to you.

With new technology comes apprehension, however new advancements have allowed us to reach new levels of vehicle safety, which is most evident within the system of the Pursuit. Giving people the gift of motion is one of our main priorities, but with people who have disabilities,

we want to make sure their safety is at the forefront of our goals. Passenger safety is another concern we addressed in the engineering of the Pursuit, and wanted to make sure all passengers as well as pedestrians aare as safe as possible.

SAFETYCOMPARISON

19

KEY SAFETY FEATURESWhile considering a computer operated car, many safety advantages come with the technology of the Pursuit. Ensuring passenger safety, the Pursuit comes standard with the fastest computer operating system allowable in the car. Assessing situational hazards is a key element in the workings of the Pursuit

computer programming. More accurate than a human, the computer system is capable of a faster reaction time and observing at greater capacities than the human brain. Not only is the Pursuit looking out for its drivers, but also senses pedestrians and other potential hazards.

More than 3 million people get injured due to car accidents, with more than 2 million of these injuries being permanent. As an engineering car company, it is our responsibility to protect our drivers and passengers to the best of our ability.

Every twelve minutes a person dies in acar accident.

1 in 3 fatal car accidents, also kill one or more of the passengers.

About 1 in 3 fatal crashes and 1 out of 5 injury crashes could be prevented or have their severity lessened.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY

20

PURSUIT PERFORMANCE

Pursuit has the ability to sense traffic signs, stop lights and other road navigation as well as construction hazards and detours. The Pursuit is also aware and constantly looking out for pedestrians in crosswalks, sidewalks and in the street. Sensors also detect motion around the car, which means wildlife such as deer, are spotted and reacted to properly.

THIS IS RYANRYAN IS AN IRAQI WAR VETERAN WHO SURVIVED AN EXPLOSION THAT LEFT HIM A QUADRUPLE AMPUTEE. RYAN DESCRIBED TO US WHY HE WANTS TO INVEST IN A FORD PURSUIT.

WHAT ARE YOUR DAILY LIMITATIONS?

WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR CONDITION?

HOW WOULD THE PURSUIT CHANGE YOUR LIFE?

You would think I would feel the worst about missing out on all the fun other people my age are having, but really what I miss most are the more mundane things. I’m limited to basic movements that don’t let me do the simplest chores. Like the other day I ran out of deorderant. Before, it would be a short drive to the drug store and I would be home in 12 minutes. That’s what I miss.

It’s frustrating to have to constantly rely on someone to get you things or take you places. It’s a terrible feeling knowing that the people that love me are almost obligated to take care of me. That’s by far the worst part of my condition.

Owning this car would be one of the best things to happen to me since getting my prosthetic limbs. The Pursuit would mean I would once again be independent, but best of all I wouldn’t feel like a burden on my friends and family.

RYAN’S MOTIVE“My fiance has been an extension of me ever

since I woke up from surgery without my arms and legs. Every single day she helps me get up, shower, get dressed and eat. She drives me to all my appointments and holds my hand when I need both physical and mental help. She is the first thing I see in the morning and the last I see at night. She has sacrificed too much just for my needs and always puts herself last. On top of this she finds time to work a full time job. This car would take a lot of the pressure off of her and allow her to live her life more freely. She is my hero and my motive for getting a Ford Pursuit.

““

THIS IS JANEJANE HAS BEEN LEGALLY BLIND SINCE HER 17TH BIRTHDAY AND ALTHOUGH HER VISION ALLOWS HER TO SEE A BLURRED IMAGE OF HER SON, IT DOES NOT PERMIT HER TO DRIVE. THIS IS WHY JANE WANTS A PURSUIT.

WHAT ARE YOUR DAILY LIMITATIONS?

HOW WOULD YOU BENEFIT FROM A PURSUIT?

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE PURSUIT?

Unlike 100% blind people, I can see blurred images as if you’re looking through a camera so out of focus, that making out faces is hard. I can do mostly anything to a certain extent, like cooking for my family on some nights. Because I can’t drive a manually operated car, I can’t go grocery shopping or pick my sun up from day care.

I would love to be able to feel a little independence for once. Being able to pick up the dry cleaning and food, but most of all I want to drive my kid to the park. I feel like because of my condition he is missing out too. My husband works a lot of over time, but feels obligated to come home and take care of us. I don’t want him to feel responsible for me anymore.

I love the accessibility of this car. How can something with such advanced technology be this user friendly? Well after test driving the Pursuit, I know how much of a success this car is. If this car could make such a difference in my life, I can only imagine the impact it could have on people who are considered more disabled than I am.

JANE’S MOTIVEGrowing up in a large family, I knew the value of the family dynamic. We all took care of each other and all took part in family chores. At a young age I was taught responsibility and hard work. As I developed my vision disability, less responsibility was put on me by my parents, which has made me feel guilty. As my own family is growing, it bothers me more and more that I can’t take care of my husband and son the way my mom took care of us. Adding this car to my family would help me be able to do more of the house chores and work and allow me to feel like the mother I want to be. I don’t want my husband to have to take care of me and I certainly don’t want my son and future kids to have to wait on me either. Gaining the independence from this car would not only benefit me, but my family as well. If not for me, I would want this car in order to take proper care of my family.

THIS IS DONRAY IS A RETIRED BUSINESS OWNER, WHO HAS DEVELOPED PARKINSON’S DISEASE, WHICH HAS MADE HIM LIMIT HIS DAILY ACTIVITIES. RAY SAYS HE IS NOT READY TO SLOW DOWN AND HAS SO MUCH MORE HE WANTS TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THE HELP OF THE PURSUIT.

DON’S MOTIVEI’ve always been a self-sufficient man, so when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, I was very disappointed. Immediately I had to revoke my drivers license, which meant I could no longer visit my kids and grand children on the weekends. Because my wife died 10 years ago, I am more dependent on public transportation or my friends. Calling a driving service or taxi gets expensive and I feel guilty making my children drive out here all the time. My Parkinson’s gives me daily struggles, however if I were to have a Ford Pursuit, I know my quality of life would increase dramatically because I could see my grand children again at my own will. I want to be able to have my life back and not let this disease control when and where I go and who I am able to see.
