    1846 DECORATIVE NEEDLEWORK

Ladies complete guide to needlework and embroidery containing clear and practical instructions whereby any one can easily learn how to do all kinds of plain and fancy needlework" by Miss Lambert. When published, this book was a complete guide to every kind of needlework popular in the period, including crochet, knitting, netting, tapestry, braiding, and embroidery. Additionally, this book offered one of the first histories of needlework ever published, creating a model for the many needlework instruction manuals that followed. A particularly pretty book with numerous illustrations and comprehensive introduction by Textile Historian Lynne Zacek Bassett, Consulting Curator for Textiles and Costume, Connecticut Historical Society, former Curator of Textile and Fine Arts, Old Sturbridge Village, and author of Textiles for Clothing of the Early Republic and Northern Comfort: New England's Early Quilts. 1846 Decorative NeedleworkISBN 0-9717605-8-6 504 pp CaseboundList Price: $39.00

THE WORKWOMAN'S GUIDE by a Lady

“One of the most important needlework manuals ofthe 19th Century”L.Z. Bassett, Textile Historian

Although she was too humble to identify herself, the English "lady" who authored The Workwoman¹s Guide created one of the most important needlework manuals of the 19th Century. The book is appropriately titles, for it is not a handbook of fancywork patterns for ladies of leisure but a comprehensive instructional text.

The modern researcher will find The Workwoman¹s guide especially rewarding to use, for here are head-to-toe descriptions of men¹s women¹s and children¹s clothing. Here are also instructions for making every sort of period household textile, including elegant bed hangings and window drapery.

COSTUME & FASHION - Each item of apparel- for babies, children, men (laborers and gentlemen), women (servants and society women) is graphically depicted both in the stages of creation and completion.

INTERIOR DECORATION - Upholstering, bed draperies, window blinds, cases and cover. The author guides the neophyte through all the steps necessary to become and accomplished upholsterer.

STITCHING KNITTTING & PLATING - The bone stitch, shawl stitch, network stitch, honeycomb stitch, French Stitch, and seam stitch are just a few of the 35 different stitches described and pictured for the knitter.

    The "FIDDLE"

16" Fiddle floor stand $95 ( same as the Harp 16)

Small Rigid Heddle Looms for Onsite Demonstrations

The Kromski "Harp" has a warping board integral to its design; turn over the loom and you can make your warp (five yards plus). When you get ready to travel, take your Harp with you; it folds to be more compact (with the warp attached) and fits neatly into the Kromski tote bag (optional). The overall look of the Harp is also striking; European alder wood with a clear finish, lots of curves and turned pieces. Available in 3 different sizes, also available with floor stands and other accessories.

16" Rigid Heddle loom $18924" Rigid Heddle loom $20932" Rigid Heddle loom $229

The "Fiddle", at 16", will do everything the 16" Harp will do in terms of weaving; you will not be giving up anything in that regard. Weave to your heart's content. The main differences between the Harp and the Fiddle are that the Harp can fold and comes finished with warping board pegs whereas the Fiddle does not fold, comes unfinished and does not include any warping board pegs. Also, the Fiddle is only available in a 16" weaving width; the Harp comes in 3 widths: 16", 24" and 32". The Fiddle also comes ready for use as a warping board (pre-drilled holes on the back of the frame) - you can purchase the pegs for this purpose or make your own.

The Fiddle comes unfinished and partially assembled. You may finish the wood but it is not necessary. Assembly is easy (instructions included) and takes about 30 minutes.
