What a way to celebrate 20 years of the Jersey Child Care Trust with the announcement that Lady Dalton has become our new Patron! We are honoured and delighted to have Lady Dalton on board and her endorsement of what we do makes such a difference to us and our supporters.

We look back in this edition to just how far we have come as a charity. Back to our earliest days in 1997 when there was no support for children with special educational needs and disabilities in their nurseries and how we have changed that.

Every single child and their family form part of our story. In this edition we look back to how we helped Harry because,

without us, he would not have been able to go to nursery. We also look forward to potential future career aspirations for Harry and how, through Pirates and Princesses Week children can help us to help more children.

As a charity, we are proud to be an integral part in Jersey’s process of making major legislative and policy changes that benefit not only children and families, but every single islander. In this edition we tell you more about how we work hard with others to put families first.

Thank you to everyone who is part of our story. You help us to make a real difference.

Making a difference since 1997!

Raising Early Achievement in Literacy (Making it REAL)Making it REAL provides training and resources for nurseries and preschools in Jersey to raise early achievement in literacy. It is now entering its third year with some fantastic results.

98% of Practitioners rated the training as excellent, increasing their knowledge of engaging parents to support children’s learning.

80% of parents reported increased confidence in supporting their children’s literacy.

71% of parents reported improvements with their children’s literacy, language and communication.

Most recently, Dr Cathy Hamer has run a ‘Making it REAL’ for Parents workshop at the Jersey Library. The four sessions

equipped the parents not only to respond to their own children’s learning but also prepared them to volunteer in nurseries and preschools. More sessions for parents will be running in June.

In addition to the REAL projects running in nurseries and pre-schools around literacy, this term has seen many settings running REAL Maths projects. The Village Preschool have had such a positive response from families that they are running more events and home visits in the summer term!

Watch this Space - Nursery Place FundingThere are plans to publish a clear guide for the children’s workforce around how to access the £200,000 of available charitable funding for nursery places each year. The Early Years and Childhood Partnership aims to make this a much easier system for practitioners to navigate very soon.

We are delighted to announce that Lady Dalton has become our Patron. In her first month, she has shown unfaltering commitment and support with no less than three engagements with us!

Speaking of her reasons for becoming our Patron, Lady Dalton said. “Jersey has one of the highest rates of working women in the developed world, many of them are mothers and for some families juggling work and childcare is a tremendous issue.

Over the last 20 years a small local Charity, the Jersey Child Care Trust, has worked tirelessly around putting families first. It believes passionately that by helping families access the nurture,

care and learning they need early on, each child can reach their full potential. These children are after all the next generation, the future. The amazing work being done by the Child Care Trust is literally changing the lives of children and their families here in Jersey and I am honoured to be asked to be Patron.”

Lady Dalton’s first engagement included a glimpse into our work at a local day nursery. She met the team at Cheeky Monkey’s at Durrell, headed up by Nursery Owner Juliet Pearmain, which included our JCCT Support Worker, Emma who enables a little boy with Autism to attend alongside his peers.

The Jersey Child Care Trust funds 40 part time, year-long nursery places for children, aged 2-3 yrs, whilst their parents, living with significant challenges, learn new skills that will enable them to make positive and long term changes.

A cohort of 10 parents faced with the challenges of single parenting, low income or struggling to cope, experienced a skills based programme to help boost confidence, trusting relationships and lower stress levels. Funded by Ogier, the Resilience Development Company delivered the 5 week bespoke resilience training with incredible results.

Safeguarding Award CongratulationsCongratulations to Karen Ogilvie, Manager of The Village Preschool who was awarded one of seven Safeguarding Awards to recognise her outstanding safeguarding practice. The Chair, Glenys Johnson awarded Karen with her certificate and her nomination was read out to a packed room of Safeguarding Partnership Board members, fellow awardees and the local media.

Liberate Award Finalists

We were a finalist in the Best Non-Profit Support Initiative Award Category for the Liberate Equality and Diversity Awards recently. Our work around enabling inclusion for children with disabilities in private day nurseries and preschools across Jersey attracted our nomination.

One of the greatest differences that we can make for children and families happens when we join them and others to work on making improvements to our local legislation and policy that impacts them. We have recently noticed a tremendous increase in invitations for us to join others to progress these improvements and these are sincerely welcomed.

Most recently our work with others has seen a developing Children and

Young People’s Plan, improved Safeguarding procedures and access to training for the Voluntary Sector, a review of Early Childhood Education with proposals to the Minister for Education, the introduction of Unicef’s Baby Friendly Initiative and improved family friendly legislation being drafted.

Look how far we have come! In 1997, the idea that every child with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) would be able to go to their chosen private nursery was just a brave dream. There was nothing available but we were determined to give all children the chance of a better future.

We had a vision and a tremendous faith that others would support us to make it happen and in 2000 we received our first grant from BBC Children in Need to support six children on the Special Needs Inclusion Project. Since then, we have supported over 350 children with SEND in most private day nurseries and preschools making a real difference to them and everyone around them.

Harry aged 3 years old loved nursery at Little Oaks, his friends and paint but he needed our support to enjoy these.

He was fed through a tube into his stomach every 3 hours and struggled with his mobility, walking with a frame. In addition to his Support Worker, Mel, Harry was surrounded by his friends who learnt how to help him whilst they all played together. Now Harry is 6years old and we recently invited him to try his hand at baking scones at the Beresford Street Kitchen. He loved the experience so much and we are thrilled that he has begun to consider his future career options at such a young age!‘I will never forget how

you have helped my family’ Parent

Pirates & Princesses Week 25 - 29 June 2018

Calling all nurseries, preschools and any group with young children! You can register with us now for a free fundraising pack so you can host your own Pirates and Princesses Day for us in June.

Children are sponsored by their family and friends to dress up as pirates and princesses and learn some new sign language to go with their songs and stories. This year we are introducing our new Signing Together Volunteers from HSBC who are trained and ready to join you for your singing time on the day.

You can contact us for a free fundraising pack with posters, stickers, letters and sponsorship forms to help your day be a success. Together we have raised thousands to help children with special educational needs and disabilities. With your support, we can go on to help many more.

If you want to make a difference in your community, get in touch to volunteer with us. We have various tasks to suit, from ‘one offs’ to more regular opportunities.

Kayleigh is from JCG School and visits us for one hour every week after school. We really look forward to her visits and love the difference that she makes.

‘I’m Kayleigh and I began volunteering with JCCT last year through my Duke of Edinburgh award. I chose JCCT through the JCG Serves Fair at my school because of the direct and positive impact that it has on children in Jersey. There is a real friendliness and warmth from everyone at JCCT and my role is so varied! Last Christmas I even took part in a Christmas day swim to raise money for JCCT! It may have been freezing but it was a great feeling to know I had contributed to such a brilliant charity. I love volunteering at JCCT, it is a fantastic way to meet people and learn new skills.’

With your support we can make amazing things happen! ‘For the first time since his diagnosis, I am excited about the future’. Parent about our support.

Every donation makes a difference to us, from your office dress down day to being chosen as your charity of the year. Every penny counts. Thank you to you all and in particular to some of our most recent supporters.

We were chosen as one of the five main charities to benefit from the Lions Swimarathon 2018 and have just received £10,000. Our sincere thanks to the Lions Club, all the amazing swimmers and the generous support of the Royal Bank of Canada.

Voisin’s customers have donated a total of £2,846.27 to us in the past year through their in store Pennies Scheme.

And finally… to the amazing shops and businesses that host our lovely collecting tins. You know who you are! Know that we spend every single penny wisely putting families first.

Cream Tea for JCCT 2018 We are launching our second season of Cream Tea for JCCT inviting you to host cream teas in your homes, businesses and schools from the 1st May over the summer.

Together we raised over £18,000 last year which included some incredible events across the Island.

In 2018 we are introducing our Cream Tea for JCCT Annual Awards to be presented at a special Cream Tea event at Government House hosted by Lady Dalton in June.

Keeping up with tradition, we hosted our first Champagne Cream Tea for JCCT of the year at Longueville Manor raising over £1,400!

To host an event, register with us for your free fundraising pack either through our website, email or give us a call. As soon as we hear from you we’ll pop your free pack in the post.

Our thanks to Dasa Wharton Photography.

Nanny Accreditation in Jersey

We introduced the Nanny Accreditation Scheme to Jersey in 2003. Jersey’s first employer of an Accredited Nanny was Jennifer Bridge, who also helped us to make the Scheme a reality.

The brave JCCT teams raised £900

“In July 2001 I became the first female States member to give birth while in office and in 2003 I gave birth to my second child. I realised that as a working parent, once I had more than one child, employing a nanny made sense for meeting the children’s needs and also financial sense. However, I was shocked to discover that while you could get Childcare Tax Relief if your child was in a day care setting you were not eligible if the child was cared for in their own home. I set about working with the Jersey Child Care Trust to rectify this anomaly. I wanted a scheme that would give parents financial parity with other childcare choices and that gave parents peace of mind; an accredited nanny must have professional qualifications, first aid and safeguarding training. They must have a police check, references and be insured both personally and for any vehicle they drive. Having worked on this scheme with the JCCT, by coincidence, I ended up being the first employer to employ an accredited nanny. The scheme has stood the test of time as my children are now 14 and 16 years old and with 60 Accredited Nannies, it’s still going strong.”
