- 1100 new entrants Nova Scotia

- 37,000 new entrants Canada

- between 200 – 250 new entrants annually to private truck driver training colleges in NS

- Lack of skilled drivers = potential lack of company growth

- 90% of all consumable goods coming into and going out of Atlantic Canada is done by truck

- Every 3 seconds a tractor trailer unit crosses the US border and is a multi billion dollar industry

One Journey Trucking Work and Learn Partnership

- Industry recognized they needed to be part of the solution

- Project Team included Department of Community Services, Department of Education, Trucking Industry employers (Armour Transportation, Eassons, Sunbury Transport), DCS clients, Future Worx / Career Works Nova, private training industry and THRSC

- Project phases: orientation with employers, one

week job readiness, four weeks essential skills, 12 weeks of skills development with end goal being employment

- Test of Workplace Essential Skills testing specifically for the trucking industry was developed through the national Canadian Trucking Human Resource Council (pre employment for new entrants / test for professional driver / dispatcher / safety personel)

- Three main essential skills focused in testing is reading comprehension, document use and numeracy

• Measuring success …

– Of the original group of 8; 5 are employed using their Class 1 driver’s license; 1 is completing their work experience and 2 did not complete all phases of the training (one for medical reasons / one due to nerves, but has since found employment and attributes personal success to growth during essential skills training)
