We had a briefing from AucklandTransport the other day about theCity Rail Link that is in the firststages of construction in the city. The underground rail is going toconnect Britomart to the AoteaCentre and then up toKarangahape Rd before it headsout to the suburbs.

I’ve never caught a train inAuckland because of where I livebut I’m excited about the railproject anyway - largely forsymbolic reasons. It feels like youcan’t call yourself a true big cityuntil you’ve got an undergroundtrain, and now we’re getting one.

Maybe in 100 years whenthere’s a subway system asextensive as the motorways andour grandkids get the bullet trainto Wellington, we’ll look back atthis time as the beginning of it all.Sometimes it’s hard to stop andlook up and see how good we’veactually got it.

Sure, there’s a chance it’s all amirage built on inflated houseprices and debt. But is there achance we are unknowinglyliving in a time of historicprosperity? - Ian

Homelessness

❚ 177 people sleeping roughwithin3kmof the Sky Tower❚ 50per cent of homeless under 25❚ One in every 100Kiwiswerehomeless in 2013

One hundred rough sleepersnow have an extra layer to keepthem warm for the chilly wintermonths ahead.

The Catholic Church in Auck-land was gifted high quality coatsto distribute to the city’s homelessby the Sovereign Order of Malta.

‘‘It started over a lunch timeconversation with one of themembers of the Order of Maltawho was visiting Auckland fromSydney,’’ says Lyndsay Freerfrom the Catholic Diocese ofAuckland.

‘‘He was disturbed to hear ofthe extent of homelessness hereand because they have con-structed some thousands of coatsin Australia, he decided to sendsome to us.’’

James Liston Hostel inFreemans Bay provides emerg-ency housing to those in need andopens its doors for the homeless tobe able access showers.

The hostel was gifted 24 coatsto distribute and manager Char-lotte Ama says they were all grate-ful.

‘‘We’ve given them out to therough sleepers when they came into access our showers,’’ she says.

‘‘They are handy the way theyare made as they’ve got velcro andpockets for them to store stuff andthe weather has been quite coldrecently.’’

The Auckland City mission’slatest street count in May foundmore than 177 people were sleep-ing rough within a 3km radius ofthe Sky Tower and rough sleepersusually increase over winter.

The parish priest of St Pat-

rick’s Cathedral, Monsignor Bern-ard Kiely is delighted to be able togive warm, quality coats to thehomeless.

‘‘The coats are so warm andlightweight, with internal andexternal pockets to take a person’sbits and pieces. They also stretchto fit a variety of sizes,’’ he says.

The Order of Malta is active in

120 countries and is committed toserving the poor and sick world-wide.

The idea of giving coats tohomeless people began with theOrder’s Australian branch whichhas caught on around the world.

The rest of the coats will be dis-tributed around Auckland by StPatrick’s Cathedral in Wyndham St and by its parish in Otara.

Purewa pioneering the live-streaming of funerals

Purewa employee Chris Martin demonstrates the chapels’ internalwebcasting system.

Kiwi ingenuity is a national termused to express our knack for beingable to miraculously solve problemswith the available resources athand. In association with Purewa

Cemetery and Crematorium, multimedia company One Room hastaken this idea to a new level withthe creation of a high definitionwebcasting system that allowsfuneral services to be streamed livefrom almost anywhere in the world.Purewa’s general manager,

Clifton Thomson has backed theproject since it was first conceivedseven years ago. It’s with hisguidance and support that expertsat One Room have successfully re-branded this concept into a world-wide success, increasing NewZealand’s digital prowess by 10.Since Purewa launched the

product four years ago, thesoftware has come leaps andbounds where quality is concernedand now features high definition,HDMI cameras and impeccablestreaming speeds. It works by feeding sound and

images from four cameras aroundthe chapel, allowing remote users tochoose the orientation in which theyview the proceedings, while offeringa crystal clear picture of the entireservice.Family members and friends of

Young business all wrapped upALASTAIR LYNN

Beeswax and cotton has helpedone young entrepreneur securean inside look at the world’s mostsuccessful companies.

Western Springs Collegestudent Zachary Monk will be jet-ting off to Silicon Valley in Sept-ember with the Young EnterpriseTrust.

Designing, developing andmarketing an organic beeswaxfood wrap was just the first step toget him there.

The Enterprise in Action com-petition saw 80 students completetwo challenges to win a place onthe trip.

It produced some tensemoments for Monk but it was theknowledge he gained throughfounding student-run companyWrap It Up that helped him securethe spot.

‘‘It just teaches you things youwouldn’t learn in the classroom, there’s just so many aspects youhave to think about,’’ Monk says.

The company wants to ridtheir community of harmful plas-tic waste and think theirbiodegradable wrap is a simpleanswer.

‘‘We melt beeswax overorganic cotton wool which can beeasily done in an oven,’’ Monksays.

‘‘We’re all conscious of theneed to be sustainable and we

want to do something to contrib-ute to that. Reducing plastic wasteis a way of doing that.

‘‘This is a sustainable optioninstead of plastic wrap.’’

The Western Springs Collegeyoung enterprise team willofficially launch their product onJuly 29.

Students are responsible foreverything from organising and

sourcing materials to manufac-turing and marketing their prod-uct.

With their idea secured, WrapIt Up now wants to see how farthey can take it.

‘‘The way they’re made meansyou can have designs, companylogos, or anything printed onthem,’’ Monk says.

‘‘It’s not just food it can be used

for but a whole range of things. The great thing about beeswax isit’s antibacterial.’’

Wrap It Up is the first businessWestern Springs College hasentered into the Young Enterprisecompetition.

Monk says he hopes to carve apath which will inspire his fellowstudents to take up the challengenext year.

Māori art stamps its mark onnational Matariki postage

While his cousins were playing bullrush or

getting into mischief around the marae, a young

Te Atiwei Ririnui spent hours alone harvesting

harakeke lax and evolving his raranga (weaving)skill.

Te Atiwei irst learned the art from his koro

(grandfather), who he watched splice ropes and

tie knots and plaits when he was eight years old.

“One day he was putting up a clothesline for

my mother using these skills - that was my

introduction to the traditional art of weaving,”

he says.

“From there, I would be out practising and

reining my skills my koro taught me while my

parents prepared food in the wharekai.”

Since then, his skills have been recognised

nationally through numerous exhibitions and

conventions.

One of his latest works ‘Kete’ featured as a $1.80

postage stamp for New Zealand Post’s Matariki

2016 series.

Te Atiwei (Ngāti Ranginui) says people often askhim about being a male weaver, something he

doesn’t consider unusual.

“I’ve been doing this for over 20 years. I see it as

the rebirth of something that had been lost for

many generations.

“Raranga was practised by men many

generations ago. I’m just trying to maintain that

knowledge so I don’t see this as unusual - but as

history repeating itself.”

His passion for his craft forms part of the work

he’s completing toward a Master of Applied

Indigenous Knowledge, which he studies with

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa in Mangere.

“Weaving ofers lots of challenges that I love.

I’ve practised the poutama pattern for the last

10 years now and for some reason I can’t get

enough of it.”

Anyone can learn weaving and other traditional

Māori Arts such as wood carving, kapa haka,

Is it gluten thatmakes me tired?

If you think you may be gluten intolerant, go and see a health professional, says

questions can be answered.

Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY

I often feel sleepy after I havebread, sometimes when I have asandwich for lunch I could easilycurl up and go to sleep? Could Ibe gluten intolerant? Thank you,Amy.

Hi Amy. If you feel tired aftereating bread specifically, chancesare you’re responding to changesin blood sugar or brain chemistrycaused by higher levels of insulin.

Gluten intolerance could alsobe a part of the response. However, many different factors have aninfluence.

GLUTEN INTOLERANCE

Wheat, rye, oats and barleycontain a type of protein calledgluten. Some people can’t digest itfully, so they experiencesymptoms after eating gluten-containing foods. Bloating anddiarrhoea are frequent side effects, but lethargy and brain fog are alsosymptoms commonly associatedwith gluten intolerance.

If you think gluten is a problemfor you, I encourage you to talk toa qualified health professional.

COELIAC DISEASE

Both genetic and environmentalfactors play a part in thedevelopment of coeliac disease.

It is estimated that in NewZealand coeliac disease affects upto 1 in 100 of the generalpopulation but many of thesepeople will be undiagnosed. NewZealanders of Celtic origins are atthe greatest risk of developing thecondition.

The average age of diagnosis ofcoeliac disease is approximately 40years but it can occur at any age. Itis possible that a major life eventsuch as pregnancy, infection, serious emotional stress andsurgery may activate thecondition particularly ingenetically pre-disposedindividuals. If you suspect coeliacdisease I encourage you to consultyour GP.

Despite having a very healthydiet I suffer with brittle andbroken nails. I would appreciateyour reply. Thanking you, Bev.

Hi Bev. There a number of reasons

nutritionally why our nails maybecome brittle. It can be due topoor digestive function – often dueto poor stomach acid production(commonly due to stress). Thismay mean that you eat well but

don’t absorb the nutrientseffectively.

Having apple cider vinegar tostart the day can assist with this.Concave nails (like the inside of aspoon), may be caused by low ironlevels, or iron deficiency-anaemia.Iron helps form haemoglobin, amolecule that helps distribute redblood cells loaded with oxygen toyour nail matrix. Brittle nails canalso be a sign that you need moreminerals in your diet, such ascalcium, magnesium and/or zinc;or that the thyroid gland needssupport.

Repeated wetting and drying ofthe fingernails (this occurs whenwashing up without gloves) canalso be the cause of nail damage, this tends to make them dry andbrittle.

This is often worse in lowhumidity and in the winter. Andlastly, nail polish can be damagingto nail health particularly whenleft on for long periods of time.
