Although the electrical connectors attached to the ends of the module cables are “finger safe”  when new, if they are opened under load, the dc arc may damage the insulation and the connectors may then pose a shock hazard. Therefore, there are new requirements in 690.33 for locking connectors in the 2008 NEC. A tool will be required to open these locking connectors. They will also soon be appearing on most, if not all, PV modules, although they are only required when the PV array wiring is operating above 30 volts and is readily accessible (690.33).

Amphenol Helios H4 is designed to meet NEC 2008 standards without requiring additional locking mechanism.Benefits are:

HELIOS H4 M12 BULKHEAD CONNECTORSMOUNTING INSTRUCTIONSThe connector can be used with either a round hole or a “D” shaped hole. 

a) In case of the D hole, you must use the flat gasket which will be mounted from the front.The hole must be 12.3+‐0.13 mm, no burrs, remove the sharp edge.The nut must be tightened with 2nm. 

b) In case of the round hole you have the option of using either gasket but o‐ring is more standard. The hole must be 12.7+‐0.13 mm, no burrs, remove the sharp edge (preferably bevel of 0.5mm). The o‐ring will fit INSIDE the bore, not on top of the bulkhead.If you look closely at the connector thread, you will see that there is a groove at the flange end. This groove has a diameter of approx. 10.15 mm, the o‐ring has a nominal cord diameter of 1.6mm. With this, the o‐ring sitting in the groove has an OD of 10.15+ 2*1.6 = 13.35mm; the bore has a diameter of 12.7mm. That means, the o‐ring has a squeeze of (13.35‐12.7)/2/1.6 = 20.3%. This is a usual squeeze for static o‐ring applications.Since the seal is radial in the bore, the connector flange is in direct contact with the bulkhead and this avoids any kind of rocking (tilting) issues.The nut must be tightened with 2nm.
