Pyramid Boys Fire Up
After a long two year hiatus, the Pyramid Hill Fire Brigade once again had a running team competing at the VFBV Senior State Championships, held in Bendigo over the long weekend! The team consisted of some new and some old faces! After a slow start on Saturday the boys found their feet on Sunday coming 4th in the Hydrant & Tanker trial event! An injury struck down one of the boys (not the oldest in the team either!) so some quick rejigging of the team had to be done before Mondays events. Blake and Ash were successful in there Y coupling, coming a brilliant third!! It was a great effort by the boys with some brand new events thrown in and some events they haven't done since their junior days!
Pyramid Hill’s 2019 team consists of Robert Moon, Ben Lee, Ash Moon, Mathew Moon, Dylan Moon, Blake O'Toole and Noah Chislett.
Bring on the 2020 State Championships which will be held in Mooroopna March 28th & 29th!

A Note From Joan... A funny thing happened on the way to THE FORUM, I decided it was time to
watch my Great Nephew ride his bike!!! And where else would you go to watch
your Great Nephew ride his bike than the Tom Flood arena on their most prestig-
ious night of the year - The Bendigo International Madison. Young Kelland had
been riding his bike with his grandad Bernie ever since his feet could reach the
pedals, and had started winning races from about age 14. He was an international
Junior World Champion before he was 18, and has been riding with the Australian
Cycling team for the last couple of years. The whole of the Australian Cycling team
(women and men) won in Poland a couple of weeks ago at the World Champion-
ships, cleaning up most of the events and titles – a matter so insignificant that no
one in Australia was told about it!! Fortunately Kells’ Great Aunties Joan and
Claire, were able to be there to see him ride in his next International Event, so we
booked a room and stayed on the Saturday night, then realised the main event was
on the Sunday night, so stayed on to see that (and to enjoy being OUT & ABOUT).
The Madison is held over 200 laps, and appears to take about an hour. During which
the riders race at about 60 kph, taking it in turns to ride a lap at race speed, then
getting a ‘breather’ while positioning themselves to chase into the mob, find their
partner, join hands with him and then be ‘slung’ at full speed into the melee, to ride
a lap and then ‘sling’ their partner and on and on for 200 laps. In case you get bored
there are sprints to win, and all sort of points allotted for various efforts on the way.
This is no race for sissies. Unfortunately on this occasion there was an unfortunate
spill of riders at full speed and one went over the rail into a spectator. Once four
ambulances had left with those who needed the most care, the race teams were re-
formed and the race recommenced with quite a few of the competitors, suffering
from cuts and scratches. Anyway our heroes of the night had been among the lucky
one s who were ahead at the time of the accident, so the battle was on for the
honours, which finally went to Kell and Sam Wellsford, who were champs for the
second year in a row. They grandly said they would be back to try to make it three
in a row next year, so I think I know where I will be in a year’s time. By the way
the evening ended with a magnificent fireworks display. Until next time...

Bowls Notes
With the culmination of Saturday Pennant, the 60 and Over
Competition and Barefoot Bowls the 2018-19 bowling season is all but
over give or take a plethora of tournaments.
60 and Over
The 60 and Over guys had a pleasant day out at Gunbower to bring to an end this form of the game for this season. Sadly the elusive dead chooks remained elusive to our fellows. Bill, Ray, Ron and Reg Hipwell were our reps this week and managed to win their two first games before falling foul (fowl) on the last game. The Gunbower gents obviously knew how to play their own greens as they were the successful recipients of the chooks with the Kerang Golf folk being the Runners Up. Well done to our team for being a competitive representative side and thanks to Allan for managing the team.
Saturday Pennant
Saturday’s Grand Final turned out to be a real corker! It was
finger-nail biting time all round with some superb bowling on display.
Results: Division 1 – Kerang defeated Cohuna Golf by 2 shots.
Division 2- Cohuna Golf White defeated Cohuna Golf Navy by 1 shot.
Division 3 – Kerang defeated Wakool by 17 shots.
Congratulations to the successful teams for 2018-2019.

We still have two more tournaments to host, one on 16th April and one
on 5th May, so it is not quite time to lock up the bowls just yet. There
are numerous other tournament to attend so please let Jan or Lionel

July 2 1926 The request from Pyramid Hill for the installation of electric light was considered at the council meeting on Wednesday. The engineer said that he had discussed details with the manager of the station at Quambatook, who told him that his estimate of 12/ per month per householder for consumption was low. It was the experience at Quambatook that once the light was installed the people used it more than was estimated, and it had amounted to 16/- or 18/- there. Mr. Graham considered that in view of the expansion of Pyramid. Hill the 30 h.p. engine at first thought of by him would not give sufficient reserve power for peak periods, and it would be wise to spend another two or three hundred pounds to put in a larger engine. Cr. Spowart said the people had met and favored the scheme. The estimate as upon us users and more than that number had promised to take it. People would use the light more than was expected; he was inclined to go on with the scheme. At present three or four houses were being built, and there were more to come. The proposal was safe, and lie thought it would not be a burden. There was the question of the town bearing its own burden in this. A lot of money had been spent in the town, though they would like to like to be able to spend more. He moved that the engineer set the necessary procedure in motion to put the project into effect. Cr. Riegel seconded and advocated an engine of more 30 h.p. Cr. Barnes said he was sorry to see the Shire getting a loan, thus breaking away from its custom; but it was for a certain purpose In Boort It did not pay, and with only ono engine there was risk of stoppage and darkness. It was outside the real business of the Shire, and if it affected the central riding lie would oppose it, but it was an affair' of the east riding he would say nothing. Cr. McGillivray said he agreed with Cr. Barnes to the extent that he would rather go on without a loan, but things were changing and this being a special thing it needed special treatment. Sentiment could be put aside in this case. If it failed to pay the interest would amount to very little for each ratepayer. If the Boort lighting did not pay that was the affair of the butter factory which ran it. If anything happened that the light failed sometimes through accident the ratepayers were sensible enough to put up with darkness until things were put right. He felt sure that after the first year the scheme would show a handsome profit. We had to progress and Pyramid Hill was now coming into its own. So many towns were now being supplied from Yallourn it might be possible to secure a good plant from one of them. Cr. Weaver said the loss at Boort was £70 and it was due to the fact that the pumping, for which they used to receive £120 was now being done by the urban trust. He was pleased to see them take the matter up, and they could get the benefit of Boort's experience. If the whole shire had to pay the interest he would take his part in it. Korong Shire was now floating a loan to light two towns. The President said Cr. Barnes did not like getting the loan, but he would he fortunate if he had not to get another for the central riding bridges. Times were different, and they had to be progressive. He knows of an engine which had been running at Mincha for years and had never turned them down. That all depended on the man in charge of it. The engineer said he hoped the people would not expect the light to be in use at a very early date, as the procedure under the Acts of Parliament occupied a long, time. An Order in Council had to be obtained to get permission of the Electricity Commission and that had to have three months’ notice before being another granted. Then there was another Period for the Order-in-Council to obtain a loan. The procedure was long.

This year National Playgroup week is being celebrated between the 24th and the 30th March.
Playgroup is a great way for children to learn about the world, make friends and develop social skills. Playgroup also gives mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers a chance to share ideas and experiences.
Between the ages of 0 to 6 years children go through a stage of rapid brain and skill development. For the best development, young children need a stimulating environment to play and learn. Playgroups offer babies, toddlers and young children a wide variety of early learning experiences in a safe and supported environment.
At playgroup children can:
• develop physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually
• gain self confidence
• develop cooperation skills
• extend their experience of literacy in a social environment.

• have new experiences
• develop communication skills
Within the Pyramid Hill Community there is great support for playgroup and early learning opportunities. The Pyramid Hill Playgroup is run from the Pyramid Hill Preschool on Friday from 10.00am to 12.00pm. VicPol & VFF Working Together On Farm Thefts
In July last year I asked farmers and community members to be vigilant about crime in rural areas. This followed a number of thefts from farms and break-ins in some of our towns. Unfortunately we have seen these farm thefts continue across Victoria. However, the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) and Victoria Police are working together to try and curtail these crimes.
The VFF in conjunction with Victoria Police held an information session last month (which I attended) regarding this farm crime. There were many interesting points that came up during this session, including plenty of information about what systems work in trying to deter farm crime as well as the pattern of crime behaviour. Another important point raised was that Victoria Police have dedicated farm crime officers at a number of locations, including at Echuca and Swan Hill.
According to the VFF, the Livestock and Farm Crime Specialist Group includes a list of officers specifically trained in dealing with rural crime (also known as Agricultural Liaison Officers or AGLOs). It is good to know that Victoria Police (and the VFF) are very much aware of and working together on the issue of farm crime – an issue that causes great frustration for our farmers and our rural communities.

Autumn Firewood Collection Season 2019
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has announced that the Autumn Firewood Collection Season for 2019 is now open until 30 June.
The Autumn Firewood Collection Season for residents of Loddon Shire opens today (18 March).

DELWP is reminding people to ensure they stay within collection limits. This is a maximum of two cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year. The felling of any trees for firewood is strictly prohibited. Collection is to be during daylight hours.
DELWP staff will be patrolling parks, forests and reserves to make sure people are doing the right thing while collecting their firewood. Infringement notices, fines or even imprisonment can apply to those who don’t obey firewood collection regulations. It’s also important to check whether a firewood collection area is part of the autumn planned burning program. This may require affected firewood collection areas to be closed at short notice.
