Fire-resistant glass in generalArchitectures and interior designers increasingly use largerglass surfaces and glass doors to improve aesthetics, safetyand comfort in buildings. In many cases glasses must havefire-resistance functions as well to ensure safe evacuationand safeguarding.

Based on their production technology EL type fire-resistantglasses have two main categories:

• laminated fire-resistant glasses consisting of several lay-ers of slim float glass with transparent fire resistant gel inbetween the layers

• gel (or interlayer) glasses consisting of two (at certain pro-ducers three or four) glass panes and a transparent fire-resistant gel layer in between.

Drawing on the stable professional and financial backgroundof Dunamenti Group the Dunamenti AKA Kft. launched theproduction of PYROVITRO gel (interlayer) fire-resistant glassin Hungary according to the manufacturing licence acquired.

The licence is for an effective manufacturing technology de-veloped in Western Europe a few years ago which allows forthe production of long life fire-resistant glasses of reliablequality with a favourable value for money evaluation.

PYROVITRO gel (interlayer) fire-resistant glasses have suc-cessfully passed trials under standard EN 14449:2005 andmeet the requirements of CE marking.

Standard EN 13501-2 lays down the functional requirementsapplicable for fire-resistant glasses and provides for theminimum periods of fire-resistance expressed in minutes.

The following classes are defined accordingly:

E – Integrity Requirement• the glass functions as a physical barrier against flame,smoke, and hot gases without collapsing

EW – Radiation Requirement• the glass functions as a physical barrier against flame,smoke, and hot gases without collapsing and decreasesheat radiation

EI – Insulation Requirement• the glass functions as a physical barrier against flame,smoke, and hot gases without collapsing, decreasessurface temperature and prevents spontaneous ignitionon the protected side

Examples for Marking :• E30: the glass meets the integrity requirement for 30minutes

• EI90: the glass meets the integrity and insulation re-quirements for 90 minutes

We continuously test and trial our products fitted in marketleader steel, aluminium and wooden frame structures of dif-ferent sizes. As a result we manufacture glasses belongingto class EW (meeting integrity and radiation criteria) andclass EI (meeting integrity and insulation criteria) bothgroups with fire-resistance of 30 to 120 minutes.

Testing fire-resistance limits:For the purposes of the fire test the fire-resistant frame ismounted in front of a furnace. The temperature of the fur-nace is increased according to the Time/Temperature Curveprovided for in the standard. The frame should meet two re-quirements during the time of the test procedure (30, 60, 90,and 120 minutes):

• Integrity (to be evaluated visually): there is no structuralcollapse or lasting flame on the protected side (the cottonpillow does not glow or burn) and it is not possible to enterthe cracks with the measuring instrument.

• Insulation: The increase in the temperature of the meas-uring points marked out on the protected side of the glasssurface according to the standard may not exceed 180°Ccompared to ambient temperature, and the average in-crease of the temperatures measured at such points can-not be more than 140°C.

Joinability with different fire-resistant profiles, fire-resistantdoors, and fire-resistant building elements ensures thewide-scale use of PYROVITRO glasses.

Other functions such as outdoor usage, sound insulation,structural solutions, or walkable surfaces can be satisfiedby combining PYROVITRO glasses with other glass struc-tures or supplements.

General characteristics:• fire-resistant glasses meet integrity as well as insulationcriteria

• clear glasses ensure high transparency free of distor-tion

• the use of VSG and ESG bordering glass panes facilitatescompliance with different safety requirements

• UV stability• symmetric structure• excellent acoustic features• production size is approximately 300-3000mm (it variesaccording to the pane size requirements by differentstandards)

• suitable for temperature ranges from -20 till +45ºC• also suitable for outdoors as double thermal insulation • can be mounted both vertically and horizontally (as glasssurface or walking surface)

• combination with special glasses (e.g. Low-E, bullet-proof, patterned, painted) widens the range of applica-bility

• regular, rectangular, or other shape designs • allows for half-structural fitting• suitable for overhead fitting (in compliance with TRAVregulations)

• combined with other glasses it can be used as X-Rayglass

PYROVITRO EI30, 60, 90fire-resistant glazingIn terms of their structure, PYROVITRO fire-resistant glasstypes belong to the category of gel-filled (interlayer) glass.The glass structures consist of two bordering (VSG or ESG)glass panes and a transparent fire-resistant gel layer in be-tween.

In case of fire, the gel (interlayer) starts foaming at around120 degree Celsius, and transforms into a rigid opaque sheetinhibiting the transmission of fire, smoke and gases to theunexposed side while ensuring complete thermal insulation(EI).

PYROVITRO Shalf-structural fire-resistant glazingPYROVITRO S type glass: semi-structural assemblies offer-ing an ideal solution where fire resistance and maximumtransparency are both a must. The special silicon joints thatrun along the frameless glass panes guarantee fire resist-ance and an uninterrupted endless glass surface.

Characteristics:• complete glass structures with a fire resistance function• only horizontally applied mounting clamps (in wooden,steel, aluminium or other fire resistant frames)

• vertically uninterrupted glass surface, maximum trans-parency (where the panes join, only a 25-30mm thickblack (or other colour) strip is visible due to glass struc-ture)

• the bordering glass panel is made of toughened glass 8to 12mm thick, depending on size and the required bear-ing capacity

• limitless joinability• custom solutions (painted, stained, and acid-etched sur-faces)

• UV stability on both sides

PYROVITRO H horizontal glazing

PYROVITRO H type glass: horizontal fire-resistant and walk-able glass surfaces made up of two clearly separate but in-tegrated parts. The structural upper glass sheet ensures abearing capacity of 500kg/m2 (calculations according to Eu-rocode), and the lower layer warrants fire resistance as perclass EI90 (or EI120). The two glass structures are joinedwith a thermal insulation layer in between.

Characteristics:• fire resistance as per class EI90 (EI120)• structural walking surface with a bearing capacity of500kg/m2

• limitless joinability• good thermal insulation capacity• hidden support structure of steel (the dot pattern whichgradually discontinues towards the edge of the upperglass body provides an exclusive appearance)

• also suitable for overhead glass assemblies• individual solutions (anti-slip walking surface, non-see-through design, other surface patterns)

Glazing instructionsFire-resistant glasses shall only meet the descriptions pro-vided for in the standards if they are mounted in the fire-re-sistant frame structures with the required assembly aids.

Glazing Instructions (always mandatory):• Fire-resistant glasses create an integrated system to-gether with all the assembly aids

• PYROVITRO fire-resistant glasses can only be installedin places where the temperature does not exceed +50ºC.When installed outdoor appropriate thermal protectionshould be provided for the fire-resistant glasses (ther-mal insulation layer, Low-E coating, etc.)

• Fire-resistant glasses can only be installed if there is avalid certification available

• Avoid glass and metal contact• Glass plane edges and fire tapes must be intact• The inside area of the frame must be dry and accessible• Use a hardwood or equivalent aid to buttress fire-resis-tant glasses

• Minimum groove size for mounting is 20 mm• The gap between the edges of the glass panes and theframe cannot be less than 4-5 mm

• Use fire-retardant foam tapes in the gaps between theglass panes and the frame

• To fix the glasses use non-combustible ceramic tapes orsilicon seals

The quality and fire-protection performance of PYROVITROglass are ensured by permanent supervision during manu-facturing. We continuously examine the presence of anysmaller penetration or bubbles in the special fire-resistantgel layer as well as any distortion or blurring. Such phenom-ena cannot be considered faults if they do not influencetransparency and fire resistance. Larger bubbles may alsooccur at the edges of the glass panes, however, when thepanes are mounted the frame covers them.
