OPERATING LIGHT SYSTEMS
Maquet PowerLED surgical lights shall be installed in all Theatres and associated areas as listed
below;
Main Hospital
2 x Specialist Theatres Maquet PowerLED 55/DF
2 x Specialist Theatres Maquet PowerLED 55/DF/V (Satellite Suspension)
The Lights comprise a single tube suspension system fixed to the structure. The lights comprise
double fork suspension systems for maximum user flexibility.
The PowerLED surgical lights utilise the “Point & Shoot” focus technology which automatically
focuses the light beam on the operating site from up to 1Mtr from the required area.
The depth of beam is almost 120cm which means that the light head can be positioned well away
from the Surgeons Head.
The PowerLED 500 has 128 individual LED light sources in a Fresnel arrangement which generates the
diverging beams, which in turn provide the superior shadowless performance of the light.
Where indicated the lights can be fitted with video camera. These lights are pre-wired to accept a
removable video camera. The camera cable is connected to a Control Unit or a specific
manufacturers stack system (e.g. Smith & Nephew)
All Surgical Lights shall be supported by a Battery Back-up Unit (BBU) providing 3Hours duration in

Isolated Power Systems provide electrical shock protection to patients who are under the influence
of anaesthetic gases and have intra-cardial connections to electrical equipment.
The IPS/UPS systems are offered as an option to the main installation. The additional price listed
incorporates the systems being installed into the areas listed below;
Main Hospital Building
General Theatres 2 x 6KVA IPS
Speciality Theatres 4 x 6KVA IPS
8 Bed PACU 2 x 8 KVA IPS
The Isolated Power systems serving each area shall have the circuits interleaved to provide diversity
of supply to each of the areas. Therefore in the event of any power failure on one unit, then that
room is not completely isolated.
For example, the IPS systems serving the 2 General Theatres and 4 Specialist Theatres in the Main
Hospital shall have 4 x 10 KVA IPS distribution units. The circuits from each of the IPS distribution
boards shall be interleaved into each Theatre. Therefore there will 4 x 16 circuits wired through 6
Rooms.
A typical specification for an Isolated Power System shall be
Single Isolated Power Supply – 8KVA
1 –SIPS unit comprising,
1 – Mild steel enclosure, surface mounted
1 – Insulation Monitor
1 – Load CT
1 – DP panel / transformer isolator
1 – Eight way DP distribution board c/w 20A. MCB’s
1 – 6A. DP MCB (control MCB’s)
1 – set for terminals for IPS alarm conditions
1 – Earth bar
1 – Alarm unit for remote mounting
1– 8KVA Isolation Transformer
Un-interruptible Power Supplies shall be installed to provide load protection for the Isolated Power
Systems. These shall be installed with in a temperature controlled environment (up to 25 Deg C). The
cooling to the switchroom shall be provided to the Main Contractor.
The UPS systems shall be sized to provide N+1 protection to the Isolated Power Systems. N+1
protection assumes that in the event of one of the UPS systems failing there is back-up to meet the
electrical requirements without interruption of supply.
We envisage a central systems being installed to serve the Day Surgery centre and a separate system
to serve the Main Hospital Block, comprising;

3 x 60KVA UPS for the Main Hospital Block
All UPS systems shall generally be Three Phase power supply into the UPS and Three Phases on the
outgoing side. The supplies will then be fed through a local distribution board, from there to be fed
to the individual Isolated Power System units in the various areas.
Each UPS will be sized to serve IPS systems which are assumed to operate at 0.8 lagging power factor
and also to have an inrush <12 x FLC. All UPS systems shall provide 60 minute battery duration.
A manual by-pass will also to be provided, in addition to a static by-pass to allow the UPS to be
removed without loss of supply. The by-pass supply is to be routed separately to the normal UPS
supply and connected directly into the IPS panel.
