Lost Mountain Dental at Due West Michael H. Mulkey, DMD

“Patient-Focused Family & Cosmetic Dentistry”

Located in West Cobb County, Lost Mountain Dental at Due West is a thriving Dental practice and the culmination of a “Dream becoming Reality” for the practice founder, Dr. Michael Mulkey. A native of Marietta Ga., Dr. Mulkey says, “We pursue excellence not only in our dental treatment but with the entire dental experience. The patient’s comfort is important to us. We train extensively and attend numerous continuing education courses so that we can provide the very best care available!”

We recently spoke with Dr. Mulkey and asked him to share some of the details from his experience relocating the practice…

First of all…How did you find the right space to relocate your practice?

…I knew the general area where I wanted the office to be located. I had been negotiating to buy a building in the same area for the dental practice that could be a good investment as well. It was a bank-owned property with a lot of unresolved issues that needed to be worked out, so I became concerned about the circumstances of the property. A realtor that was involved with this property made me aware of a lease space that was available nearby, which happened to be in a better location for my practice. I liked the owner of the property, thought the

lease negotiations were fair, and I ultimately decided that leasing this space was the best move for my practice. At this point in my career, leasing provides more long term flexibility. I know that this location has been great for the practice. Tell us about the process you went through leading up to the move…

...To help explain my process, I came up with a diagram that illustrates the steps that we went through. First of all, I had a vision, or a “Dream” of what I wanted the office to be. I have practiced in several locations in my career and knew what should be included in the office. I wanted this office to be big enough to have the functional and esthetic features that would take me through my career. The next step was creating a “Concept” for the project. Deborah Brunner, Brian Stallings, and Atlanta Dental helped us arrange several visits to other offices. We also made out of town trips to the major dental manufacturers.

We learned about different treatment room concepts and dental ergonomics which began narrowing down the ideas so we could start a floor plan for the project. This is where Gary Lowery and the team at Atlanta Design really shined. They were instrumental in helping me put these ideas into a functional Floor Plan.

We began working on the more detailed drawings, or “Blueprints”. These plans showed all the many details that we had discussed in our planning meetings. From the functional fine details to esthetic specifications, everything was documented for the contractor. As we moved into construction, or “Structure” stage, these plans were so detailed that I really didn’t need any formal construction management services (I have some experience with managing construction projects). With the team at Atlanta Dental and the contractor, we were able to manage the construction phase without any major issues. Having the level of detailed plans from Atlanta Design was a key to this phase being easy. After we moved into our new office, we quickly began to realize the “Functionality” that we spent so much time planning, which would help us take our practice to a new level. Our caring and compassionate team has been able to use the features of the new office to provide our patients with a better dental experience, which helps our practice grow and be more productive. My initial “Dream” that we started many months ago has now become my “New Reality”. It’s been an amazing process!

Explain how your new office functions for you & your staff…

The number of treatment rooms, along with the ergonomic and functional design of those rooms, has helped us to maximize our production. We have two dentists and four hygienists that work in this office, and we also have the potential for further growth in the future, possibly including dental specialists. Our facility now gives us the flexibility we need for the future…

The sterilization and inventory control areas are also keys to our productivity and flexibility. The planning and design of these areas allows our practice to be organized and allows our team to focus on patient care.

Tell us about your marketing strategies & how the Interior Design of the office works with marketing the practice…

Our exterior signage is one key to our marketing strategy, and is visible from the main road and the side road that leads to our office. There is a popular Coffee Shop just across the street that provides a lot of “walk ins” asking about our practice because of our signage. When a potential patient enters our office, we really want them to feel at home as soon as they walk in. As you know, patients immediately form an opinion about the practice upon entering. We wanted to provide the patients with a comfortable upscale living room feel. Atlanta Design recommended interior designer Karen Swank, who worked with us to create a space that projects that feeling. The patients comment on the coffered ceiling most often. We’ve received many requests for the paint colors that we used in our office. I saved the color board from the design process in a shadow box that we have on display. We also have a coffee area and TVs that add to the home-like feeling. We want our office to be a “comfortable place” where patients feel relaxed.

In conclusion… is there anything you would like to add that might benefit other Dentists planning to renovate or move?

…I just want to add that I feel very blessed, and I am very open to sharing the ideas that went into this office. I would be glad to have anyone who is interested in seeing the office come by for a visit; just give us a call. I would be flattered to have you stop by.

Michael H. Mulkey, DMD attended Marietta High School. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree in micro-biology from the University of Georgia, after which he received his doctorate from The Medical College of Georgia in 1988. Dr Mulkey excels in the treatment of complex dental problems. Over the years he has worked extensively with dental implants and TMJ issues, helping countless patients regain their smile and confidence.

Dr. Mulkey has been married to his beautiful wife Sheryl since 1987 and they have two children, a daughter and a son. When Dr. Mulkey isn’t busy helping his patients achieve beautiful, healthy white smiles he enjoys golf, music, and traveling.

He is also a member of Due West United Methodist Church.

Professionally, Dr. Mulkey is a member of the American Dental Association, The Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and the Georgia Dental Association.
