CHLOE KING12CK

How does your media product represent

particular social groups?

The artists represented in my magazine are young, White British people of both genders, as demonstrated in the photos shown This is to represent Britain’s youth (teens and young adults) in the music industry who start out independently (indie being the genre of music the magazine represents). The three photographed artists are well presented, however I have not made them look like glamorous rock stars as this is not how indie artists start their career; typically they begin dressed in a smart-casual way, with the girls wearing typical makeup and the males remaining cool and reserved.

I have made the artists fairly diversified, however the ones pictured are fairly similar to one another. Diversity is shown in gender and appearance, Ollie being dressed simply and appearing serious whilst Laura and Eliza Doolittle take on a more stylish, relaxed look. I took all the photos with the exception of the one of Eliza Doolittle, and tried to represent my artists as sensible, but still interesting by using props (e.g. Guitar, microphone) so they appear to be active musicians rather than just posing for a camera. My two models are both of White British ethnicity, however the magazine is obviously not white-exclusive, just focuses mainly on British artists and the only models available were white. Both are sixteen, so the photo I used from the internet had to be of somebody slightly older to balance this out.

The artists I have photographed have photos of them looking both determined and happy. This is to give the impression that they are hard-working, but still easy-going enough to relate to and appreciate. Their clothes are smart and they are well-presented, making them good role models for teenage readers as they are inspired to act appropriately, whereas making young people seem too rebellious would be adhering to negative stereotypes and enforcing the belief that to be successful you have to act wild and seek attention, as apposed to being quietly determined and mellow. However other artists mentioned aren’t as mellow as those pictured above but are still successful within the indie genre, so it doesn’t discourage young people who would rather be more adventurous. This , as well as all the other points mentioned previously, is aiming to appeal to a target audience of young people seeking inspiration and people to relate to. This has been done by making the ages of my artists similar and applying positive morals and success stories to both genders.
