How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

In the process of completing my A2 Media Coursework this year, I was expected to complete a number of

different media products. My main product being the Music video following a Magazine advert to promote

the artist, and a cd digipak including a CD Cover, (back & front) and an inner booklet. This itself is an example

of synergy.

Overall, these three media texts definitely serve their cause as a marketing tool. They are intended to work hand in hand with the main media product, and promote the artist to grab the target media audience’s attention. The magazine advert and the CD digipak both intended to reflect the main ancillary text i.e. the music video. The dark and shady concept of the magazine advert and the CD digipak firstly mirrors the music video as the majority of the shots are in black & white enhancing the harsh atmosphere.

CD COVER

INNER BOOKLET

As the main fonts of the CD cover, and the font of the magazine advert are exactly the same; this allows both products to be identified as ONE to the audience. The one similar factor between the two media products links the products as one, whilst also promoting the artist in two different platforms. Whilst the magazine advert will be informing the audience about the artist’s music firstly on the magazine and possibly online, the CD cover then allows the audience to identify the Album by it’s font and also the choice of colour.

Another similarity between the three media products are the artist’s outfit. The artist has similar outfits in each media product representing the ‘street life’, showing his hardships while also linking it into the lyrics as well as the visuals. We have used Andrew Goodwin’s theory here by creating a relation between the two.

He is wearing a grey hoodie and a plain white top and he has his hood over his head. This is the general way that young teenagers dress in this time period, so many artists will find them self relating to his life style which will attract more audience.

The main font in the magazine advert matches the CD cover font and also the concept of the music video and the artist’s genre style.

The background image in the CD inner booklet fits in with the context of drugs, as it is a swirl of smoke.

The colours used in the inner booklet background are black, grey and white. This emphasizes a black and white world like in the CD cover, magazine advert and the music video.

The font is also bold and simple, and the colour is grey which also fits in with the colour scheme of all three media products.
