Rabbi Idstein, Menahel

A Torah Thought from Rabbi Idstein...

Mr. Cleary, General Studies Principal

Mr. Cleary’s Corner

Perhaps the most well-known question in all of halachic literature is the Beis Yosef’s question about the Chanukah lighting. The Jewish people, after finally vanquishing the Greeks, turned their attention to the Temple which had been in the hands of their enemy. Desperate to resume the service of lighting the menorah, they searched for a cruse of oil, sealed and marked for its purity. After much searching, one cruse was indeed found, but no more were located. Overjoyed, they lit the menorah; however, their concern remained. It would take eight days to manufacture new oil, but the cruse would only last one day. What would they do tomorrow? Or the next day? Their concern turned into joy and gratitude as the miracle of Chanukah unfolded. That small cruse of oil continued to burn for eight days, allowing for the processing of new oil. In commemoration, the leaders of the generation established the holiday of Chanukah to eternalize the miracle.

But why, wonders the Beis Yosef, is Chanukah celebrated for eight days when apparently the miracle was only for seven days, given that the oil was sufficient to burn for one day in any event?

Many wonderful and insightful answers are given to this famous question. I would like to share with you an answer from the Alter of Kelm. When we observe the world around us, its beauty and luster, its power and magnificence, its intricacy and design, we should, in truth, see the omnipotent hand of HaShem.

However, because of the regularity of the world that we live in, with its seeming predictability, we cease to see HaShem’s hand in a beautiful sunset and no longer hear HaShem’s calling in the melodious singing of the songbird. We ascribe the world around us to “nature” and look no deeper. When a miracle occurs or an unaccountable phenomenon transpires, we then see HaShem’s hand and mastery. We acknowledge that it is indeed HaShem that guides us and sustains us. Through this miracle, says the Alter, we are now able to extrapolate and see HaShem in all of nature that surrounds us. We realize that the everyday wonders of the human body, the expanse of the universe, and the mysteries of the sea, can only be formed and fashioned by HaShem himself.

Indeed, this is the lesson of miracles. This, then, is an answer to our question. When a cruse of oil, which by the laws of nature should only burn one day, instead burns for eight days, we are shown that all that transpires, whether it be an everyday occurrence or a once-in-history event, is but the will of HaShem. It is this miracle, the miracle of “nature,” now recognized as HaShem’s will, that we celebrate with the eighth candle.

This Chanukah may the light of the candles illuminate our world, allowing us to see HaShem manifest in all around us, guiding us, protecting us, and embracing us.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Math Games anyone can do…Practice, practice, practice! It is safe to say we need

practice to improve at anything. In order to become better at piano, we need to practice piano. In order to become a better reader, we need to practice our reading (read a book). In order to become more proficient in math, we need to practice math. How can we do that? At school, there are many opportunities to improve our math facts, but at home, we are often stumped, especially if we don’t want our kids looking at a screen or being online to practice math. I have some suggestions that I have used in the classroom and in my own home.

If you have dice, you can practice math. Roll two dice and add, subtract, or multiply them together. This is great for younger kids learning to add or multiply. I have spent many evenings rolling dice and playing against my kids to see who can add the dice first (I usually let them win). For older students, roll two dice and add them up and then multiply the sum by a third die rolled. Or, multiply all three together. At Torah Academy, we have

purchased 12 sided dice to really work on the math facts! If you have a deck of cards, you can practice math.

Flip two cards over and add, subtract, or multiply the two cards. You can use face cards as equal to ten, or jacks can be 11, queens can be 12, and kings 13. Once two cards are down, you only have to flip one more card over to continue to quiz your math facts. This is a great opportunity to practice math facts and have fun with your kids!

If you have an imagination, you can practice math. With my children, while roughhousing with them, I would quiz them on their math (and occasionally letters) and if they didn’t get the correct answer, I would tickle them! We had so much fun learning math...well, I had so much fun anyway! Sometimes, I just call out numbers for my kids to multiply. It may sound silly, but I believe it works! I have been around enough math teachers to know the importance of knowing your addition, subtraction, multiplication and division without using fingers or any tricks. Just know the math. Have fun, but learn those math facts!

Fifth Grade Judaic Studies ~ Rabbi Heisler

Welcome to the Fifth Grade Bais Hamedrash! These are the framed words which welcome you into our classroom—and indeed we strive throughout our school

day to both learn and act in a manner befitting those who learn in a Bais Medrash!A typical day at Torah Academy for a fifth grade boy begins with a complete Seder HaT’fila at the school

minyan—the first year of this for a boy at Torah Academy! One of the main goals of this minyan is for the boys to learn, in a highly structured environment, the proper manner of both T’filah and appropriate Kovod for a Bais HaKnesses. This, , will hopefully continue into adulthood, thereby serving to enhance yet further, our community’s Botei T’filah.

Kriah comes first!! Just as it is of primary importance that a talmid’s kriah be accurate, so too, the first item on our classroom’s agenda is kriah practice and reinforcement! This year, our class sefer to guide us in this regard is the T’hillim edition of Sefer Kriah N’eema. We use this sefer according to a specific pattern whereby similar types of sounds and words are grouped in a manner which is designed to help each talmid gain and demonstrate proficiency in similar but different sounds and words.

Next, and definitely our main Limud in fifth grade, is Mishnayos Bava Kamma. If you’re in the mood for some learning fun, please try to drop in for one of our spirited discussions about complicated cases in our Mishna class (interspersed with jokes and puns, of course!) As fascinating as our subject matter might be, I often remind my talmidim that we are busy learning HaShem’s Torah, the very basis of any “law and order” which exists in the world at large and that its relevancy to us cannot be overstated. Although our main focus is on understanding the subject matter, we nevertheless spend quite a bit of time practicing accurate translation skills. On occasion and with increasing frequency during the course of the year, we also learn the Bartenura commentary (also known as the Rav of the Mishna) directly from the actual text in addition to having already discussed the content of this Peirush.

Another important aspect of our class’s learning in general, and of Mishnayos in particular, is our system of chavrusos. Quite often we will review the Mishnayos learned that day, or even an entire perek, with a Rebbi-designated study partner. It is during such audible review that our classroom most closely resembles a true Bais Medrash!

LOTS OF RASHI most accurately describes a main focus in Chumash this year! While it is true that we learn many p’sukim with great care and attention to detail, we spend much time reinforcing a very important subliminal message: that Rashi is our friend—a Rebbi who solves so many problems for us and makes very difficult p’sukim much easier to understand! In the course of learning the parshiyos of Sh’mos, Va’eira, and Bo, we constantly make a point of recognizing familiar , prefixes, and suffixes. Boruch

Classroom Close-up (Continued)

HaShem, many of the talmidim are already capable of independently translating a majority of the p’sukim with a great degree of accuracy. This will, Im Yirtza HaShem, continue to grow stronger as the year progresses.

The next two Limudim alternate with each other. Prior to every Yom Tov, we spend much time learning about the approaching Yom Tov’s halachos and minhagim. To accomplish this, we use packets comprised of sections from the Darkeinu Halacha series by Rabbi Avraham Atkin z”l, a well-known rebbi in my hometown of Far Rockaway. The information learned is reviewed and reinforced with practice questions, and the discussions which ensue about all aspects of the halachos are truly fascinating!

When we aren’t preparing for an upcoming Yom Tov, we are spending the available block of time learning so many topics in our Sefer Yahadus by Rabbi S. Binyomin Ginsberg. Each topic, among them very central topics within Yiddishkeit, is clearly explained with its sources traced and its details illustrated along with interesting facts and anecdotes. The talmidim have a set “Yahadus Chavrusa” with whom to study this sefer and continue independently along with their own chavrusa whenever we have the opportunity to utilize this extremely interesting and well-written sefer.

Novi has recently been re-introduced into the 5th grade boys’ regular curriculum. Presently, we are learning Sefer Shoftim during part of our class time every Sunday at the rate of one perek per week. (And now for a taste of 5th grade humor: We aren’t going to judge the fact that we had been in a non-prophet environment!)

Be’ur T’filah takes place twice a week. During this time, we discuss different parts of Davening. This year the focus is on Boruch She’amar, Ashrei, and most of the Brochos in Sh’mona Esrei.

Eretz Chemda—You hear these words and it sounds like Bentching! Actually, it’s an amazing new program live from Eretz Yisroel. It happens every other week, when we join with the 6th grade boys and experience a presentation directly from Eretz Chemda—a desireable land, the Land of Eretz Yisroel! Slowly, the talmidim are becoming familiar with the mitzvos that have very strong connections to Artzeinu Ha K’dosha. You, too, can experience an

element of this excitement by perusing the take-home sheet that your son brings home every other Wednesday.

PARSHA is a lot more than just the Parsha!Of couse, we do learn and review the

events and topics within the weekly Parsha—and we do so for most of our class time on Erev Shabbos—but, in addition, we use the weekly Parsha as a perfect opportunity to discuss so many Inyonei Hashkafa, concepts involving the proper manner in which a Yid is expected to behave and how we, members of HaShem’s Chosen People, are expected to view events around us.

Hopefully, your son is able to regale you with aspects of this class on a weekly basis.

I know! You wish you were in 5th grade again!!

Fourth GradeAlthough the Torah does not clearly mention the Yom

Tov of Chanuka, it does give hints about the Yom Tov. One hint has to do with the 25th word in the Torah. If you want to know what that word is, just open a Chumash and count the first 25 words, and then figure out how it connects to Chanuka.

Mrs. IdsteinThis week we learned Parshas Vayeishev, both as a

Parsha and in Chumash. We learned how only one Shevet has the title of Tzaddik attached to his name— . We discovered many details of his —in everything that he did. Ask our students for some deeds.

Keep it up! Have a good Shabbos!Rabbi LichtmanFirst off, 6th grade students did an outstanding job

using the writing process to publish their fractured fairy tales. Last week, we ended our narrative unit with a super enjoyable culminating activity in which the students presented their stories to the class. This week, we begin our nonfiction unit -- the genre most likely to spur a child’s passion and wonder for learning.

In MN History, students will begin Ch. 8: The Civil War. Slavery caused a major division between Northerners and Southerners. These groups often had differing views about its morality and necessity. War broke out when Southern states left the Union.

of shein (an animal damaging for pleasure). We had many high level questions and answers which the boys figured out on their own this week! If you walk by our classroom, you might hear a real loud “Kol Torah”. Our classroom can sound like a mini Beis Medrash!

Have a great Shabbos.Rabbi FriedlerMS Geography & HistoryThis week seventh graders are focusing on the sparks

that ignited the Civil War. We will also talk about the characteristics of the Union and Confederacy such as their goals and strategies. Eighth graders are learning about Eastern Europe, including its political boundaries, populations, and cultural characteristics.

will write their own short story that needs to have a main character and 1-3 minor characters. The short story also needs to include a theme or life lesson.

Parenting by the ParashahBook Review by Rabbi Moshe Goldsmith

Rav Shlom Wolbe zt”l writes in his sefer Z’ria Ubinyan B’Chinuch that chinuch is a mission of the highest priority, a mission whose success guarantees the continuity of the Jewish people and their Torah. Chinuch is a responsibility assigned to every father and mother.

With these words of introduction to his newest sefer, Parenting by the Parashah, Rabbi Ari Neuwirth establishes that the goal of every parent is to educate children properly. Parents must identify which actions are really educational, which have

nothing to do with chinuch, and which are the antithesis of chinuch and even produce undesirable results. Parenting by the Parashah is replete with ideas and advice derived from the Torah and learned from the mesorah.

Perhaps it is for this reason that the letters of approbation by leading roshei yeshiva, rabbonim, and psychologists, stress the importance for such a sefer. Infused with a passion for teaching Torah, Rabbi Neuwirth uses his unique style to reveal the fundamental educational concepts and ideas in raising our children through each parashah and Yom Tov.

Parenting by the Parashah systematically proceeds through the parshiyos and Yomim Tovim, with thought provoking Dvrei Torah, emerging with a sound concept of how parents can best raise their children. The author’s style weaves together information garnered from the

foremost commentaries, leaving the reader with a profound understanding of how to rear children through the lens of Torah. The stories and anecdotes sprinkled through the sefer make the style of the book all the more enjoyable. These Divrei Torah allow parents to reflect on how they can effectively and successfully bring up their children. Some of the intriguing topics included in this sefer are:

How can we explain to our children why tefillah sometimes doesn’t bring desired results?

What can we learn from the life of Moshe Rabbeinu to help prepare our children to become future leaders?

What insights can the mahn give us in dealing with our children’s focus on materialism?

Rabbi Neuwirth is a renowned mechanech with over fifteen years of experience in the classroom, as both an elementary and mesivta menahel of Judaic and general studies departments. Rabbi Neuwirth is the founder and director of Likras Shabbos in Edison/Highland Park, New Jersey. He is a sought after speaker by many popular organizations. Each week, he delivers a parashah shiur and parenting session in the Agudah of Edison/Highland Park, which is also hosted by Torah Anytime. Rabbi Neuwirth had the great merit of learning under Rav Shmuel Berenbaum, zt”l, and Rav Avigdor Miller, zt”l. He is currently a talmid of Rav Eliezer Gibber, shlita.

Parenting by the Parashah is sure to be a great Chanukah gift. In the words of Rav Shmuel Kamenetzky, rosh yeshiva of Philadelphia Yeshiva, “This collection captures the essence of chinuch… I’m delighted that this sefer, containing parenting advice through the prism of Torah, is being published.”

**The book can be purchased locally at Frankel’s, on the corner of Minnetonka Blvd. & Ottawa Ave. S.

Also, available through MenuchaPublishers.com or Amazon.

MS MathematicsThe seventh and eighth grade math classes continue

to work on various Pre-Algebra and Algebra skills. They include solving square roots, identifying mathematical properties (associative, communicative, distributive, etc.), and solving multi-step equations. Each section will be given a short quiz next Tuesday or Wednesday before we break for the long weekend. Dr. Thorne and I want to wish you and your family a wonderful and happy Chanukah.

Mr. Ford & Dr. Bev ThorneMS ScienceThis week in science the 7th grade leaned all about

photosynthesis and cell division! We created posters and bulletin boards showing the chemical changes that occur during photosynthesis! 8th grade started leaning about volcanoes and how they connect to ideas we learned in physical science. Ask them about viscosity differences in magma and what causes the difference!

BS”D

The Kolenu Parsha Page Did you Know? (Facts and Insights into the Parsha that you and the family might not have known – enjoy!)

• Yoseif served Potiphar for one year before being thrown in prison. (Da’as Zekainim)• It was the sons of Bilha & Zilpa that brought Yoseif’s coat to Yaakov. (Targum

Yonasson)• Yehoshua could only cause the sun to stand still in Givon when he reminded it of

Yoseif’s dream in which the son bowed down to Yoseif. (Yehoshua was a descendant of Yoseif) (Da’as Zekainim)

Torah Riddle -

Who was the opposite of his name in the eyes of HaShem? Can you find four places the number 3 is mentioned in this week’s parsha? Answer can be found below the Tefilla Insights!

Tefilla Insights – HaShivainu – A Cycle of Rediscovery!

Rav Saadiah Gaon taught his disciples to examine their ways every day even if they felt certain that they had not sinned. Rav Saadiah Gaon himself had adopted this practice after an enlightening experience.

Once, Rav Saadiah lodged with an innkeeper who was unaware of his illustrious guest’s true identity. He put the Rav in a simple room and served him as he would any guest. When word circulated that the leader of the generation was passing through town, all the townsfolk flocked to the inn to glimpse Rav Saadiah Gaon. The innkeeper suddenly realized the greatness of his guest and approached the Rav, with tears streaming down his cheeks.

“Rebbi, please forgive me!”“Forgive you? What have you done wrong? You treated me very well,” Rav

Saadiah Gaon replied.“Rebbi! I didn’t know who you were! Believe me, had I known that the great Rav

Saadiah Gaon was staying here, I would’ve treated you like royalty!”Hearing these sincere words, Rav Saadiah Gaon himself burst into tears. “From

your words,” he explained, “I now understand the extent of our obligation towards HaShem. Previously, I felt I was serving HaShem well, but now I know that I am lacking. Just as your service to me changes as you perceive my identity more clearly, so too should be my service of HaShem. With each passing day, I discover new levels of HaShem’s kindness towards me. I realize that whatever respect and service I offered yesterday was woefully insufficient, for had I known then what I know now, I would have served Him with even greater devotion and intensity. Life is indeed a constant cycle of rediscovery in which man sheds his relative ignorance of the past!”

Answers – Torah Riddle – ער was רע in the eyes of HaShem. There were 3 vines in the dream of the butler, there were 3 baskets in the dream of the baker, three days pass after the dreams before the butler is restored to his job, and three months pass from the story of Yehuda and Tamar until they notice that Tamar was expecting.
