By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Address the function of Pre-SEDEX poster presentation.

Design an effective and visualize an attractive academic poster.

CAMERA READY PRE-SEDEX POSTER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 27.02.2017

Date : 1st and 2nd March (Wednesday-Thursday)

Venue : Meeting Room, Paleontology Lab, CSI Lab (TBC), MSc PG Room (16-01-04).

Four (4) parallel sessions.

Time : 0830-1700 (1st March)Time : 1400-1700 (2nd March)

Aims:

(a) Explain verbally to the audience about their project.

(b) Demonstrate their ability to answer questions spontaneouslyfrom the audience.

The procedures of project exhibition are as follows:

(a) Present a poster for an exhibition at departmental level.

(b) The internal examiners within the department will evaluate thestudents’ posters and submit the marks to the FYP Coordinator.

(c) The best poster layout and highest marks achiever will bepresented the poster at University level under SEDEX event.

Pre-SEDEX

Academic poster

A poster is simply a static, visual medium that youuse to communicate ideas and messages.

The poster is usually a mixture of a brief text mixedwith tables, graphs, pictures, and other presentationformats.

The difference between poster and oral presentationsis that you should let your poster do most of the'talking'; that is, the material presented shouldconvey the essence of your message.

Features of an Academic Poster

1. Divide your information into main categories:

• Heading - title the audience will see first

• Statement - one sentence relating to the heading, the audience will read thisdefinition and should have and understanding of this particular section

• Support Material - if the definition has sparked their interest, they will move onto this section which should include documentation and illustrations

2. Take each of these categories and summarize its contents into few sections:

• Title - concise name of poster, contributors/supervisors, organization

• Introduction - statement giving quick overview of poster

• Problem - statement of the problem

• Method - brief description of the processes and procedures

• Results - outcomes, findings, data

• Conclusion -summary, discussion of significance of results, a few easilyremembered key conclusions

• Acknowledgement – funding, center of study

• References – Cited from any sources that mentioned in any sentences appearedin the poster. 6

Poster Design Tips

Keep the material simple

Use colors sparingly and with taste

Do not use more than 2 font types

A picture is worth a thousand words … (but only if it is drawn properly and used appropriately)

Arrangement of poster components should appear smooth

Poster Construction

PowerPoint: A popular, easy-to-use option. It is partof Microsoft Office package.

CorelDRAW 9, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop andInDesign: Feature-rich professional software that isgood for posters including lots of high-resolutionimages, but they are more complex and expensive.

Open Source Alternatives: Free alternative to MSOffice. Any free graphics software.
