Background ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is proud to continue their relationship with Qantas Airways by supplying a Megadoor capable of accommodating an A380 on their new Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) hangar. This is the fifth Megadoor system purchased by Qantas since 2003.

Qantas currently operates 40 flights each week between LAX and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane Australia, on Airbus A380s and Boeing 747’s. The aircraft land in the morning and depart in the evening.

In addition, 10 other airlines fly A380’s into LAX and the new hangar means the carrier can now bid for work on aircraft owned by other carriers at LAX and rent out space to airlines. The A380 is world’s largest commercial aircraft flying today with a double deck and capacity to carry up to 853 passengers. It is approximately 80 feet tall, 265 feet wide and 240 feet long.

The hangar is being touted as the first in North America specifically designed to accommodate the giant Airbus A380 and one of the largest commercial hangars in North America.

“It will make LAX the premier center for A380 maintenance in North America...” - Debbie Bowers, the Los Angeles World Airports deputy executive director for commercial develop-ment.

Cost effective facilityLike all commercial airlines, Qantas is focused on Return On Investment (ROI). One of the ways to increase ROI on a han-gar is to optimize the facility square footage and volume. By utilizing a stepped Megadoor layout on this hangar, Qantas was able to “shape” the hangar structure and door system to the design aircraft. This allowed the team to dramatically reduce the hangar eve heights without limiting operational flexibility. This translates into substantial initial investment cost savings in building structure, especially in seismic regions as compared to a large rectangular hangar.

ProductivityOne of the easiest ways to increase worker productivity is by naturally lighting a facility. Natural lighting is the number one desired natural element in workplace design and studies have shown that good natural lighting increases productivity up to 40%. Qantas utilized Megadoor’s translucent door fabric to allow 5% of the California sunshine to brighten the hangar. The soft dif-fused light from the Megadoor creates an excellent work environment for the technicians. In addition, utilizing translucent fabric on a Megadoor is technically superior to skylights, which are prone to leaks, and translucent insulated wall panels which can be very expensive.

Space constraintsSpace is a valuable asset at the world’s busiest airports and owners must make every square foot count. Since Megadoor’s lift vertically, there is no need for space consuming door pockets or tracks systems as required by older, traditional bottom rolling doors. By eliminating the need for door pockets the architects were able to design a more compact hangar facility and allow adequate clearance for A380s to be parked on hardstands on either side of the hangar.
