PREFACE

"Honor thy father and thy mother."

This law, written in the decalog-ue, is written also in the hearts of

men, and awakens in them a desire to know the history and character

of their forefathers. Death is closing the lips of the aged, one after

another, and the traditions of their fathers are fading away, then it

seems a fitting thing that into the minds of the rising generationshould be grafted by written as well as traditional testimony a desire

to know the history of a worthy ancestry. In this genealogical

sketch of the Tififany family I have confined my researches to that

branch whose progenitor was Ephraim, son of Humphrey Tiffany,

1st, and whose emigration was from New Shoreham, R. I., to Lyme,Conn. From that town his grandson. Consider, moved to Hartland,

Conn., and became the ancestor of a numerous posterity, reachingthe tenth generation. It has been my purpose to obtain verified

records and have refused to consider any that were not such. Fromall members of the family I have ever received unfailing courtesy

and encouraging interest in the success of my work. To name one

would be to name all. Yet I crave permission to mention the nameof David P. Wilder of Bristol Center, N. Y., who married HannahC. Tififany, September 15, 1846; but for the persistant interest this

old gentleman has manifested in my work and the valuable records

and data he has forwarded to me (even with a hand so shaky as to

make it a painful task to write). I fear I should long ago have given

up the task of compiling this record as hopeless. Through corres-

pondence I have come in touch with many pleasant friendships, and

I shall still retain most pleasing memories of you all, though now I

lay aside my pen and say farewell.

NOTES ON HUMPHREY TIFFANY

"Records of Ancient Rehoboth. History of New Plymouth, by

"The town of Rehoboth, Mass., was incorporated 1645 and con-

tained the towns of Seekonk, Rehoboth, Attleboro, Swansea, Mass.,

of his Maj'tie holden att Plymouth, Oct. 27, 1685. admmistration is

o-ranted by this court to Elizabeth, the relict of Humphrey Tiffany

deceased, on all the goods and chatties of sd. Tift'eney she bringing

in a true inventorv there of and giving bond with two sufficient sure-

ties for her administring according to law. Major John Walley is

ordered by the Court to give ve oath to the inventory of sd. Tiffeney

and to deliver her the letter of administration granted by the Court,

he having given a bond as afore sd." •.

"Hezei-iah the son of Humphrev Tiffinee and of Elizabeth his

wife, was drowned in Swansey River on the 4th of December near

night, anno 1685." From town records of Swansea, Mass., fur-

nished bv town clerk Henry O. Wood.

From Uie Vital Records of Rehoboth, page 917, Humphrey lif-

fany's heirs are quoted as proprietors not inhabitants, Feb. 7, 1689,

of propertv in Rehoboth.

The emigration of the sons of Humphrey Tiffany was for a time

limited to short distances. We hear of James at Attleboro, Mass..

1693• Thomas, his brother, first at Bristol, then at Ashford ; Ebene-

zer another brother, at Barrington, R. I.; Consider and Ephraim

seem to have found their wav to the town of New Shoreham, which

town was admitted to the Colony as Block Island, May 4. 1664 Here

—per New Shoreham records furnished by town clerk of New

Shoreham—Consider Tiffanv and Abigail Niles were married and

had children. Here also his brother, Ephraim (of whose descen-

dants this history deals), and wife, Leshia, had issue.

Humphrey (3), b. Feb. 7, 1706. Ephraim (2) and his brother,

Consider (2), bought a large tract of land in Lyme, Conn., June 11,

1701. Consider (2) moved to Lyme and made a number of trans-

fers of real estate from time to time. Ephraim did not settle in

Lyme till late in 1706 or the first of 1707, judging from an agreementbetween him and his partners. Ball and Banning. For a long time

I find no transfers in his name but he was living in Lyme, Conn., in

1724, and died there previous to 1734. Was living in 1732.

INTRODUCTION

Squire Humphrey is the earhest Tiffany mentioned in Colonial

history, and he is undoubtedly the ancestor of the majority of Tif-

fanys in America. The following notes copied from reliable records

seem to fix the date when he became a citizen of the town of Reho-

both, Mass. (which town was incorporated in 1645, and contained

the present towns of Seekonk, Rehoboth, Attleboro, parts of Swan-

sea, Mass., and Pawtucket, R. I.) : The birth of a daughter, Sarah,

July 6. 1683; his death by lightning; the administration of his es-

tate by wife Elizabeth ;the death of his son, Hezekiah, the same

year by drowning; ending with a record from the vital records of

Rehoboth, which affim his heirs in 1689 to be proprietors not inhabi-

tants of property in Rehoboth, Mass.

This work is in two parts. Part first comprises a record of the

male line of Ephraim, son of Humphrey Tiffany, the original settler

in America, and his descendants bearing the Tiffany name. Part

second is a record of the descent of the married female Tiffanys

brought down to the present day. The numerals at the left of the

names designate the seniority of the children in the rotation of birth,

and the numerals enclosed in parenthesis name the generation.

Against the daughter's name in part first is given the name of her

husband, and by referring to index her record of descendants can

readily be found. Part first also contains descent through Hum-

phrey (i), Thomas (2), Nathaniel (3), Nathaniel (4), Nahaniel

(5), Levi (6), Calvin (7), Roland (8).

Many interesting documents have been preserved of Consider Tif-

fany (4), as well as traditional testimony. He was a member of

the Church of England and had little patience with the dissentingsects.

During the War of Independence, some time in the year 1778,Consider Tiffany was confined to his farm in the town of Hartland,

Conn., on account of his outspoken Toryism.After a confinement of fifteen months, hearing that an effort was

being made for his release, he addressed the following letter to the

chairman of the committee showing his penitence and sorrow :

Mr. Ensign :— I understand that the committee are about to re-

lease me, being ashamed of their depriving me of that liberty theydid 15 months ago.

I can answer the pretended committee that I never did anythingthat I am sorry for, more than that I have done too much in favor

of the United States against genuine reason and the dictates of con-

science, and the unerring Scriptures, which error I am unfeignedly

sorry for. I am, and always was, a sincere friend of America. But

if I had the same opinion of the United States as I have of poorHartland, I should think it my duty to do my utmost to have themsubdued. Sir, I suppose there may be two reasons that induce the

committee to release me without my asking them : The first, a guilty

conscience for abusing me without a cause;the second, to dismiss

me so that I can be drafted. But, that be as it may, this I will as-

sure you, and all men, that T never intend to go into the camps, and

if I am forced thither, I inend to fight for that side that I think I

ought to. I would further tell you that I retain the same principles

that I had five years ago. Don't mean to hurt any man, and amcontented to remain in my own business and happy in not seeing the

face of my implacable enemies.—Therefore please so use your en-

deavors that I remain happy as I now am, and you will oblige yourold friend.

in 1 83 1. The following year he went to Ohio, where he resumedthe study of law at Medina, and was admitted to the bar in 1834. Helater gave up his law practice to devote his time to religious mat-ters. In 186— he went to Albany, N. Y., where he published,

through W. C. Little, a work on "Trusts and Trustees." In 1863he published "Practice Under the New York Code." He also di-

gested the "New York Justices Court of Appeals Code," which was

published. In 1866-67 he wrote a work on "Government and Con-stitutional Law" as applicable to the United States and to the sev-

eral States. He was appointed by Gov. Fenton reporter to the

Court of Appeals. During his three years' term of office he re-

ported twelve volumes of Court of Appeals reports, known as "Tif-

fany Records." He was a believer in Spiritualism, and one of the

earliest exponents of that faith.

Litchfield County and State of Connecticutt, in View of the uncer-

tainty of human Life, and being at this time favored with the use of

reason, and a sound and disposing Mind &: Memory, for which I

feel to bless God, the Great author and bestower of all Good do makeand Ordain the following as my Last Will and Testament, meaningto dispose of all my Worldly substance which I mav die possessedof in the Manner following :

I St. I will that all my just Debts and funeral charges be paid, in

accordance with an arrangement made with my Sons Bela&: Chauncey Tiffany, several years ago, by which they obli-

gated themselves to pay & cancel the same.2nd. I give and Bequeath to my Loving Wife Fanny Tiffany, all

my Household Furniture which has been purchased oradded since our Marrige, also one midling Cow, or Valuethereof in Money, in addition to the sum of eighty-eightDollars & forty cents, which she received from my estate

on the i8th day of May A. D. 1838, and for which .'^he gavea receipt at said Time.

3rd. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Sally Condist, resid-

ing at Bristol. Ontario County, New York, to her and her

heirs forever all the Household Furniture which belongedto her honored Mother, except what I have paid her for,

since my second Marriage.4th. I give and bequeath to my Son Chauncey Tiffany, all the

residue and remainder of my Estate, both real and per-sonal, not heretofore disposed of by Deed or otherwise,that I may be possessed of—to him and his heirs, forever.

5th. I nominate and appoint my said son Chauncey Tiffany,executor of this my last Will and Testament in witness

Hon. Fayette B. Tiffany entered Amherst College in 1868, where

he remained until almost the close of his sophomore year when he

was compelled to leave his studies because of serious illness. Hewas engaged in the lumber business in Bristol, Conn., for some

time, in 1878 he moved to Nebraska, where he studied law and

was admitted to the bar at Brownville, Neb., in 1879. He began

the practice of law at Albion, Neb., in 1880, and met with muchsuccess in his profession. In November, 1881, he was elected

county judge, and in March, 1883, he was appointed district judgeby the Governor of Nebraska, to fill a vacancy. In November, 1883,he was electd to the same position for a full term of four years, andin 1887 was re-elected for another four-years' term. At the end of

his second term he resumed the practice of law at Omaha, removingto Colorado Springs, Col., in 1891, where he has since practiced

successfully. His record as a judge is a credit to the Tiffany name.
