Residents and daily commuters are sore over

the dilapidated condition of Shaikh Hamad Avenue Road No 242, Block 302, in the capital. The entire stretch, used by thousands of commuters daily, is extensively damaged with potholes due to lack of repair and poor drainage system. The potholed road is ignored by the authorities and need urgent repair.

“The entire road is dotted with potholes. The potholes are waterlogged because of poor drainage system. The gutter is overflowing. The entire area is stinking, making life extremely difficult for residents,” said a resident in the area.

“The water-logging attracts bugs and mosquitoes making

the area extremely unhygienic. People living around the area are unhappy over the poor condition of the road. The residents would love to see the dirt road paved by authorities. The need of the hour is a proper drainage system that make the area hygienic for residents to at least move around,” said another resident.

“Water-logging has affected business at shops in the area as people abhor to shop from cramped and unhygienic conditions,” said a shop owner on Road No 242.

“The area is overcrowded

now. The area now has more people than it can accommodate. It has come to the notice of the Capital Municipal Council that a lot of restaurants drain dirty and leftover oil into the drainage causing the drainage to clog. The council does realise the severity of the problem and is coming up with a new regulation to fix this issue that will help the residents, shop owners and the commuters in the longer run,” said Engineer Mazen Ahmad Al-Omran, Vice Chairman of Capital Municipal Council.

For the first time, wheelchairs have been

made available at Manama and Muharraq traditional markets to enable senior residents and special needs residents to tour the souq. Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) donated the wheelchairs to the Manama and Muharraq traditional market to aid older residents and persons with special needs in touring and shopping at the souq. KPMG acquires fintech platformManama

KPMG International has announced the

acquisition of Matchi, a global fintech innovation and matchmaking platform that connects financial institutions, including banks and insurance companies, with fintech companies worldwide.

“Financial technology, or ‘fintech’, is changing how financial services organizations operate,”.Jalil AlAali, Partner and Head of Financial Services at KPMG in Bahrain said, “The platform is now available for Bahrain fintech companies who want to offer their capabilities to financial institutions globally and for Bahrain based financial institutions to source relevant fintech solutions globally”

The Matchi platform includes more than 700 curated fintech solutions and a database of more than 2,500 fintech companies that financial institutions

can work with to apply innovative fintech capabilities to solving their business problems and pursuing new market opportunities.

Fintech companies and solutions undergo a curation process in order to qualify to appear on KPMG’s innovative Matchi platform. Financial institutions are able to search for a specific company or solution, or

they can use the platform’s proprietary “Innovation Challenge” capability to present specific problem statements to the global fintech market and receive recommendations on solutions from fintech innovators.

Ian Pollari, Global Co-leader of Fintech, KPMG International said, “The Matchi platform offers a curated approach that is much more rigorous than fintech databases that merely provide lists. It is designed to identify, match and enable collaboration with the most innovative fintechs and solutions to address specific issues being faced by financial institutions.”

Since its inception in 2013, Matchi has connected more than 100 leading banks and insurance companies with fintech innovations, including solutions in next generation payments, regtech, blockchain and P2P insurance.

Price of Saudi cigarettes doubles as first tax hitsRiyadh

The price of a pack of cigarettes doubled for Saudi

Arabian smokers yesterday under first-time tax measures to help the kingdom cope with a drop in oil revenues.

Residents of the world’s biggest oil exporter long enjoyed a tax-free and heavily subsidised existence but a collapse in crude prices since 2014 sparked cutbacks and a search for new revenue.

The “selective tax”, effective from Sunday, raised the price of tobacco 100 percent, to between about 18 riyals

($4.80/4.30 euros) and 24 riyals ($6.40/5.70 euros) per pack.

The cost of energy drinks also doubled and the price of soft drinks rose 50 percent, according to the General Authority of Zakat and Income Tax.

Cigarettes and fizzy drinks are popular in Saudi Arabia, where alcohol is banned.

One smoker, Hamad al-Ishewan, 33, said the new tax won’t affect his habit “even if it was 100 riyals for a pack”.

But at a shop in Riyadh’s west, Naif al-Rashid, 25, said he has now sworn off

energy drinks.“Raising the price of energy

drinks is a good thing, because most of those who consume them are youngsters and that affects their health,” Rashid said.

S a u d i A r a b i a ’ s implementation of the new tax follows an agreement among the six Gulf Cooperation Council nations, and is line with International Monetary Fund recommendations.

GCC states also intend to introduce a value-added tax of five percent on certain goods in 2018. (AFP)

Kuwait jihadistget life for attack on US troops

Kuwait City

A Kuwaiti court yesterday sentenced a professed member of the Islamic State group to life in prison

for an attack on US troops in the emirate last year.Egyptian Ibrahim Suleiman in October rammed his

truck into a vehicle carrying three US soldiers, in what the US embassy described as a “terrorist attack”.

The soldiers were unharmed but the driver was lightly wounded when his truck caught fire as a result of the collision.

Kuwaiti authorities said at the time that police found a handwritten note on Suleiman in which he pledged allegiance to IS. They also said that he was carrying suspected explosives.

Sunday’s verdict against the 28-year-old is not final and will be reviewed by Kuwait’s appeals and supreme courts.

The supreme court on Sunday also upheld a 20-year jail term against Fahad Farraj, reportedly the de facto head of IS in Kuwait and the ringleader of an eight-member convicted IS cell.

The court also upheld 15- and 10-year jail terms for the other seven members of the cell, five of whom are Kuwaiti citizens. The remaining three do not hold any citizenship.

The eight were convicted of fighting with IS in Syria and Iraq and of raising funds for the group.

Kuwaiti courts have given hefty jail terms to dozens of men charged with joining or sympathising with IS.

Jerusalem

An Israeli court yesterday awarded Prime Minister

Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife $32,500 in a libel case over a journalist’s claim she kicked him out of the car during a row.

Court documents said writer Igal Sarna was ordered to pay 60,000 shekels ($17,000, 15,000 euros) in damages to Netanyahu and 40,000 shekels to his wife Sara, as well as a further 15,000 shekels for the couple’s court costs.

They had sued for 280,000 shekels.

The 50-page ruling said Sarna wrote in March 2016 on his Facebook page that the

couple had been travelling at night in a four-vehicle convoy from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv

when it suddenly came to a halt.

“A man, no longer young, was cast out onto the highway amid shouting,” the transcript quoted Sarna as writing.

“A certain woman did not wish him to remain with her in the car, and so made a mockery of all the security and in fact of the whole state.”

Appearing in court with his wife in March 2017, surrounded by bodyguards, Netanyahu said the story was a fabrication, describing it as “so false, so absurd”.

Israeli settlement plans since 1992Jerusalem

Israel has so far this year advanced its highest number of settlement

projects since 1992, the defence minister said yesterday, despite warnings such plans will further cloud chances of a two-state solution.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman made the comments as Israel’s government faced mounting pressure from leaders of the settlement movement, who wield heavy influence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition.

Netanyahu has found himself seeking to balance the competing demands of the settlers and US President Donald Trump, who has asked him to hold back on such projects as he seeks a way to restart peace talks with the Palestinians.

Jordan kills five approaching borderAmman

Jordanian border guards have killed five people as they approached the

country’s border from war-torn Syria, the army said yesterday.

An army statement said that in an incident in the previous 72 hours, nine cars had first approached the border from At-Tanaf, a Syrian town where US special forces are training Syrian rebels to fight jihadists.

The cars were forced to turn back but a short while later a pick-up truck and two motorcycles returned in the direction of the Jordanian border, the statement said.

The guards opened fire, killing five people and destroying their vehicles, it said.

In a separate incident, two other people were arrested for trying to cross the border from Syria illegally, the army said.

US-backed force advances in RaqaBeirut

US-backed Syrian fighters captured their first western

district of the Islamic State group’s bastion Raqa yesterday, days after seizing an eastern neighbourhood from the jihadists.

A statement by the Syrian Democratic Forces said their fighters “liberated the neighbourhood of Al-Romaniya on the western front of Raqa, after two days of continued clashes.”

It said the fighting there had left at least 12 IS jihadists dead.

The SDF’s fighters broke through the northwestern district of Al-Romaniya on Saturday.

The alliance is also in control of the eastern neighbourhood of Al-Meshleb, which it captured within a day of first entering Raqa city.

One of the most significant dates in the Philippine’s history is Independence Day because it marks the nation’s independence from the Spanish rule on June 12, 1898. Filipinos celebrate it annually on June 12. Since 1962, it has been the country’s National Day. The day is spent with family bonding with friends and relatives and in

either outdoor and indoor activities. All government offices and schools are closed as are private enterprises save for commercial establishments. A ceremony in Manila serves as the official festivities as well as the simultaneous raising of the National Flag of the Philippines in various historical places nationwide. I join the entire Filipino nation in celebrating the 119th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.More than a century ago, thousands have laid down their lives so that we may live with the

dignity and rights befitting a free nation. The journey to freedom was a long and arduous one – which our countrymen paid for with blood, sweat and the ultimate act of selfless sacrifice. Despite the insurmountable hardships, the patriotism and undaunted spirit of the Filipino led to our triumph against the shackles of slavery and abuse.

On that day, we showed our colonizers and the rest of the world what Filipinos are made of. Let us take inspiration from our forebears who valiantly fought and offered their lives so that we may have the liberties that we enjoy today. Let us pay homage to their heroism by preserving our sovereignty and performing our own civic rights and responsibilities. After all, it is our inherent duty as citizens to ensure that the Philippines fulfils its destiny as a great and prosperous nation.

PAGBABAGONG SAMA-SAMANG BALIKATIN

Happy

Alan Peter Schramm CayetanoSecretary of Foreign Affairs

As we celebrate the 119th year of the declaration of Phil ippine independence, we

remember the courage and struggle, the selfless sacrifice and heroism of our fellow Filipinos who fought for our freedom.

Filipinos are very spiritual people who believe that man was created equal with basic rights. It is in this spirit that our ancestors sacrificed their lives and their livelihood to secure independence for the Philippines.

Today we renew our hope and commitment to ensure that the sacrifices of our ancestors will not be wasted. We continue to value the sanctity of freedom and the spirit of democracy.

The President and his Administration are now working hard for us to continue our fight for independence, albeit a different kind of independence: freedom from poverty, freedom

from crime, freedom from illegal drugs and freedom from corruption.

The President vowed to achieve this vision for the next generation of Filipino.

We are committed to end these perennial problems of society which have challenged our quest for law and order, and have threatened peace and security in every Filipino community.

And this effort is not only national but international. That is why President Rodrigo Roa Duterte continues to implement the constitutional mandate for an independent foreign policy: to build more bridges; to strengthen old valued partnerships and at the same time strengthen new relationships and build new partnerships.

The DFA will build, bridge, and build. So that the economic and infrastructure clusters of the Cabinet can Build Build and Build! Let us show the world that we are friends to all and enemy to none.

The men and women of the Department of Foreign Affairs urges us all to join hands and help the President accomplish his task by reigniting our passion to serve and commitment to build relationships.

Let us also remember the more than ten million Filipinos living and working abroad who work hard to liberate their families from hardship and give them better opportunities in life. The global Filipino indomitable spirit and character continue to make a difference wherever they are in the world.

As a nation, we Filipinos on bended knees implore the aid of Almighty God to guide us to maintain a just and humane society especially amidst the threats of international terrorism and transnational crimes. At the same time we stand tall as Filipinos as the Philippines is a responsible and respected member of the community of nations.

Mabuhay angKalayaan at angSambayanang Pilipino!

(Independence 2017: A United Struggle Towards Change)

Ikinararangal kong batiin ng isang malugod at makabuluhang pag-gunita sa 119th Araw ng Kalayaan ang mga kababayan kong Pilipino sa Kaharian ng Bahrain. It is with pride and honor that I greet the Filipinos in the Kingdom of Bahrain a heartfelt and meaningful commemoration of the 119th Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

In 1898 our forefathers lit the flame of courage and patriotism that led to freedom, a legacy which we and all the OFWs, including the 60,000 here in Bahrain, continue to cherish and protect to this day.

Let us heed and join the President’s call for change; in ourselves, our families, our communities and be part of our common aspiration for change towards a peaceful, progressive and united Philippines.

I assure you of the Embassy’s continuous support and cooperation in protecting and promoting the interests and welfare of the Philippines and the Filipinos in Bahrain.

Today, we celebrate as one nation the 119th

Declaration of Philippine Independence.

This commemoration serves as reminder of our nation’s glorious past – the heroism and greatness of our people to attain our freedom from the

shackles of colonial oppression and repression.

“Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong sama-samang balikatin,” relives in us the value of unity to achieve lasting and meaningful change.

Now, more than ever, we are called upon to stand as one nation to triumph over the challenges before us.

This is also a fitting opportunity to pay tribute to

the sacrifices of our Filipino workers overseas. Our modern-day heroes; as we feted them on Migrant Workers’ Day.

We are doing every means possible to realize the vision of President Duterte of bringing every Filipino worker ibn foreign soil back to their family by creating an environment that generates enough decent and adequately remunerated work in our country. By doing

so, no one will have to seek overseas work as a matter of compulsion or necessity.

In the meantime, as long as there are Filipino workers overseas, it is our responsibility to protect them.

Allow me therefore to acknowledge the Philippine Embassy and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, for serving the needs of our OFWs in your jurisdiction.

Together with 35 other POLOs located in countries where there are large numbers of OFWs, you play a vital role in implementing the government policy of affording full protection to overseas labor. That is a demonstration of love for our country.

Heritage & Historical Sites of the Philippines

Location: Middle of the Sulu Sea, 181 kilometers southeast of Puerto Princesa, PalawanInscribe in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1993

The Tubbataha Reef Marine Park covers 33,200 hectares including

the north and south reefs. It is a marvelous marine wilderness and a special ecosystem much appreciated for its beauty as well as its scientific value.

It is a unique example of an atoll reef with a very high density of marine species, with 80% coral cover of 46 coral genres and 376 fish species. The site is an excellent example of a pristine coral reef with a spectacular 100-meter perpendicular wall, extensive lagoons and two-coral islands.

Tubbataha’s north islet is a

nesting site for sea birds of all kinds and endangered hawksbill sea turtles; a diver’s paradise with gorgonian seafans, soft corals, and gigantic sea sponges serving as home to turkey fish, anemone crab, banded seasnakes, nudibranchs, starfish, catsharks,

surgeon fish, batfish, and butterfly fish. The rare, unusual looking fox-faced rabbit fish can also be found in the marine park. Marine turtles, including the critically endangered hawksbill and green turtle, nest on some of the beaches.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River

National Park features a spectacular limestone karst landscape with its

underground river. The river is unique because it flows directly into the sea, and its lower portion is subject to tidal influences. The area also represents a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a whole ecosystem --- from mountain to the

sea; and protects forests, which are among the most significant in Asia.

A highlight of each visit is a ride through its 8 km-long underground river which runs through a dome of stalactites complemented by stalagmites running the entire length of the cave.

The park is a popular destination for bird watching and is known for regular sightings of threatened bird species of Palawan peacock-peasant and Philippine cockatoo and the endemic birds Palawan scopsowl, swiftlet, hornbill, flyeater and blue flycatcher, tit and

flowerpecker. It is blessed to have the Palawan flying fox, Oriental small-clawed otter, stinkbadger, binturong, flying squirrel, mountain tree squirrel and porcupine.

The park also features an exciting Monkey Trail with its series of wooden paths to the forest.

The 2,000-year old Banaue Rice Terraces – the

most extensive anywhere in the world – were carved into the mountains of Ifugao by ancestors of the Batad indigenous people. The terraces are located approximately 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) above sea level and cover 10,360 square kilometers (about 4,000 square miles) of the mountainside.

Known as the “eight wonder of the world,” the terraces were carved with only simple tools and bare hands. They are fed by an ancient irrigation system, an ingenious complex of bamboo

pipes and canals, drawing water from streams created by bubbling springs located in the mountain rainforests.

Considered as a monument to man’s genius in turning a rugged and forbidding terrain

into a source of sustenance, the rice terraces stand to be the most awe-inspiring man-made landscape in the Cordilleras. They are also invariably called “The Stairway to the Sky.”

Location: Vigan, Ilocos SurInscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1999

The 16th century town of Vigan is “an exceptionally intact and well-preserved example of a European

trading town in East and East Asia.” Its architecture reflects the fusion of cultural elements from the Philippines, China and Europe, resulting in a culture and townscape that has no parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.

Seemingly impervious to time, spared from rebellion and the ravages of war, Vigan has remained unchanged and its many preserved historic sites – more than 180 edifices – make it look like “a piece of Spain.” With its grand cathedral, massive mansions with red-tile roofs and spacious balconies, narrow cobblestone streets, horse drawn carriages, and friendly faces peering out of large windows, Vigan is a place where “time stood still.”

You may be sensitive, but you’re also persistent. The waves you’ve surfed in the past few weeks have only strengthened your resolve. However, you will have to be satisfied with this past period of thrills. The weeks ahead will be much quieter. Use the time to regain some control over your life and work hard to simplify your attitudes.

Perhaps the last few weeks impressed you as one of the most intense periods. You will certainly admit that anything related to affairs of the heart was endowed with profound and lasting meaning. It’s now time for a physical and psychological rest in order to let you fully integrate your experiences. The weeks ahead offer a calm and quiet oasis. The day ahead will suit you, but you mustn’t expect miracles. Now is a time of healing. In the weeks ahead you will restore harmony to your energies and regain your fitness with improved diet and lifestyle. Your emotional life gets an overhaul as well, as you find the courage to confront certain unsettling issues.

Yes, you haven’t finished all the cleaning up that remains in many areas. You’re going to have to get your papers in order, pay off old debts, face physical or moral obligations, and fix technical problems. That’s a lot of work! Fortunately, once it’s done, your emotional baggage will be considerably lighter, enabling you to go farther and faster.

The astral energy says there’s a time for everything. We tend to repeat certain tasks we like doing, while those we dislike we try to get out of the way as quickly as possible. It seems reasonable, but the Universe reminds you that you should make space in your life for what you don’t like as for what you do, because each task is related to the other in some way.

Reality isn’t always as exciting as you’d like it to be. But isn’t this because you interpret reality in a particular way? You rarely look at things in detail, because fundamentally, details don’t interest you. But if you look around, you will discover that the details of a truly epic event are currently unfolding before your eyes. Put some new lenses in your glasses!

The planetary energies are encouraging you to make some adjustments regarding your social ambitions. You may desire to change professions or your circle of friends. This is trickier than you think, as the culture of your current world is an extension of you. You’re drawn to what’s familiar. Your natural tendency will be to go back to where you came from.

This planetary energy is going to test your recurring desire to go to the other side of the world or have a ready exit in any relationship. You do this so you won’t feel trapped and, you won’t be dependent. This is one of your strengths, but also your weaknesses. Throughout the next few weeks you will be pushed to involve yourself more intimately with others.

The past few weeks may have seemed Earth shattering. You may still be trembling slightly as you head into the coming weeks. Fortunately, the current astral configuration promises to be calmer, although not necessarily less intense. You will be able to apply recent decisions regarding your domestic life and finally settle some important matters.

Why do you find relationships difficult? You know interactions with others help you learn and grow. This is the case for everyone. But for you, relationships are important because they help keep you grounded. Too often you dream about reality rather than confront it. Today’s aspects are going to insist that you make a greater effort with the people closest to you.

The end of one cycle signals the beginning of a new one. Today, you will embark on a new period of understanding that harmonizes your energies. You may have taken more risks than usual lately as you exposed emotions you normally keep hidden. Did you overdo it or could you have gone even further out on that limb? You have a period of clarity ahead to think about it.Have you noticed a certain strain on your emotions? You’re resilient, but even you have found all the recent intensity a bit too much. You can relax now. The next few weeks promise to be calmer. Sunnier skies will gradually return. Your efforts will concentrate on your love life. You know you need security and stability. If you work steadily, you will attain those goals!

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrences private plane was forced to make an emergency

landing due to engine failure. She is fine and came out unhurt, according to her representative.

The incident took place on Saturday when the 26-year-old was flying from her hometown Louisville, Kentucky, where she had been

visiting family, when one of the plane’s engines shut down, reports eonline.com.

According to her representative, Lawrence “emerged unscathed from the incident”.

The jet was flying at 31,000 feet when it suffered engine failure, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing

in Buffalo. But in the middle of the landing,

the plane’s other engine shut down, on what would have been

an undoubtedly harrowing flight for “The Hunger

Actress Ariel Winter has fired back at her estranged

mother, Chrisoula, who earlier criticised her daughter for wearing revealing dresses.

Winter, 19, who was emancipated from her mother in 2015 after abuse allegations, called her mother toxic and a liar, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“What’s sad is that you lie consistently. Also, why is it that you only choose to talk to me through the press? I’m doing just fine. Toxic,” Winter posted on Twitter.

Winter’s comments come after Chrisoula said in an interview: “She (Winter) needs to grow up. I would tell her to dress properly, be the beautiful person she is. I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary.”

Chrisoula added: “Ariel is smart, beautiful and talented. She is a legitimate actress. She does not need to do this. She is beautiful with her clothes on.” (IANS)

Washington

The US first couple has hardly gotten off to a

conventional start. Now, after a period spent apart, it’s in for a very public test: life together in the Petri dish that is Washington.

President Donald Trump, for instance, all but ignored First Lady Melania -- left clambering out of a limo in a sumptuous, light blue designer dress and bearing a goodwill gift -- as he bounded up the White House steps in January to greet President Barack Obama and wife Michelle on Inauguration Day.

More recently the Slovenian former model appeared to swat away an outreached presidential hand as the couple walked along a red carpet upon arriving in Israel last month. The moment, captured on video during Trump’s first and very high profile overseas visit as president, quickly went viral.

But now it seems it’s time for the uber-wealthy Trumps -- separated for months by political triumph and a parenting choice -- to come together under another fancy roof.

After staying in New York in Trump Tower since the election so their young son Barron could finish the school year, 47-year-old Melania Trump and the boy are reportedly moving to Washington next week to take their place in the White House.

The Washington-news web site Politico, quoting people familiar with the family’s plans, reports that Melania and 11-year-old Barron will move in on June 14, the day Trump turns 71. CNN also

said the move will be next week, but did not specify a date.

The reported move comes amid the seemingly endless barrage of self-inflicted wounds, damaging   Russia-related news leaks, vicious White House infighting and other turmoil that have hobbled and distracted the Trump presidency since it set up shop in the executive mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on January 20.

Normally, when a new US president takes over, his family is an automatic component of the transition.

Michelle Obama and the then young presidential daughters Malia and Sasha were instantly, albeit discreetly in the case of the girls, a part of the new US

presidential hearth.    But Melania is the

first First Lady in modern history to delay her arrival in Washington after an election win.

During the week at least, Trump has been living alone in the vast, private quarters of the White House as he fends off the flood of reporting over Russia having allegedly meddled in the 2016 US election with the aim of helping him defeat Hillary Clinton.

His family’s arrival is not going to change much other than to give his marriage an air of stability, Katherine Jellison, a history professor at Ohio University who specializes in first lady studies, told Politico. (AFP)

Yangon

Search crews in Myanmar have now recovered

the bodies of nearly half of those who died in last week’s military plane crash, the army said yesterday.

The Chinese-made Shaanxi Y8 aircraft was carrying 122 people -- soldiers, crew members and children and other relatives of servicemen -- when it plunged into the Andaman Sea on Wednesday.

Navy ships and fishing vessels have been battling

strong monsoon swells to find victims, with the army saying they had recovered 59 by Sunday afternoon.

“The number of dead bodies found in total is now 59,” the commander in chief’s office said in a statement, adding 26 victims were pulled from the water on Sunday.

There has been no official explanation for the cause of the crash, one of several deadly incidents involving Myanmar military aircraft in recent years.

Sydney

Australia’s largest state yesterday

said it was building a separate prison wing for extremist inmates to tackle radicalisation following a rise in homegrown attacks.

New South Wales, home to about a third of Australia’s 24-million-strong population, has been the site of two terror attacks in recent years, including a cafe siege

in 2014 where two hostages were killed.

“We are in new territory. The incidents of terrorism activity we’ve seen in Australia and around the world has been unprecedented in modern times,” state Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney.

The new facility, which the government hopes to complete by 2018, can house up to 54 prisoners.

Berlin

German police said yesterday that no

explosives were found aboard a London-bound easyJet flight from Slovenia that was diverted to a west German airport after passengers overheard three men on board talking about “terrorist” activities.

The three British men, aged 31, 38 and 48, remained in police custody yesterday as police continued to question them. Authorities said none of them was previously known to security services.

The Airbus A319 flying from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana was diverted to Germany’s Cologne-Bonn airport yesterday, causing a major police operation and hours of air traffic chaos.

The pilot had diverted the flight after passengers told flight attendants “that several men were talking about terrorist activities,” a police spokesman said, without elaborating on the content of their discussion.

A German newspaper reported the men were heard using the word “bomb.”

A fire broke out in a refugee shelter in Germany overnight injuring 37 people, mainly due to smoke inhalation, police said Sunday as they searched for the cause.

An Afghan commando who opened fire on American troops killed three of them and wounded another, US and Afghan officials said, in an insider attack that was claimed by the Taliban.

Aidan Payne/[email protected]

Second seeds Fuad Rowaie and Nazli Nader defeated

top seeds Abdulla Abdulnabi and Malak Fardan in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the Seef Dental Ramadan Mixed Doubles Championship 2017, organised by Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts at the Bahrain Polytechnic campus in

Isa Town. The winning pair had

gone into the final with three straight wins without dropping a set, but the opening game they were broken and then Abdulnabi and Fardan then held serve for an early 2-0 lead.

The next three games all went with serve, though Abdulnabi and Fardan fought hard to stay in the match and resisted well in the eighth to stop their opponent securing victory when on match point.

Abdulnabi and Fardan

Rowaie and Nader advanced to the final, winning in the Round of 16 by 6-3, 6-1 against

Bryant S Arante and Almie A Dela Roz, 6-2, 6-2 against Gregg Esquivel and Amie Canlas in the quarter finals and 6-0, 6-2 against Mohammed Gaith and Natalia Matskevych in the semi-finals, while Abdulnabi and Fardan were 7-6, 7-5 winners against Omar Ramirez and Abby Pelagio in the Round of 16, 6-3, 7-5, 10-2 against Hisham Ameer and Anie in the quarter finals and 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 against Abdul

Rahman Thawadi and Rose Halili in the semi-finals.

The final was attended by the sponsors Seef Dental represented by Finance Director, Hanne Hansen and Cosmetic Dentist, Arthur Ertonga who presented trophies to the finalists.

After the match Hansen said, “The final was very entertaining and we hope to be involved in sponsoring more sports events in the future.”

Ruthless India cruise into semis

London

India swept into the Champions Trophy semi-

finals and eliminated woeful South Africa as Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli inspired the holders’ eight-wicket victory yesterday.

Kohli’s side avoided the embarrassment of an early exit as they survived a do or die showdown to advance from Group B in style.

Having dismissed South Africa for 191, two-time champions India cruised home with 12 overs to spare at The Oval.

“We wanted to step up that intensity. This is probably our best game so far,” Kohli said.

“When the opportunity comes your way, you have to grab it.”

In-form opener Dhawan was the key figure with 78 from 83 balls, including 12 fours, while captain Kohli weighed in with a typically elegant 76.

It was a nerveless performance from India, who had come under fire after failing to defend a total of 321 in their heavy defeat against Sri Lanka.

India join England and Bangladesh in the semi-finals, with the remaining place in the last four going to the winner of Monday’s Group B meeting between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Kohli’s men will likely face Group A runners-up Bangladesh in Birmingham on Thursday as they bid to make the final for the fourth time.

“We played in Birmingham before. We like that pitch. It suits our game,” said Kohli.

South Africa could have no complaints as they limply departed the tournament after

a second successive defeat. They will need a far more

determined effort to prosper when they face England in one-day and Test action shortly.

Quinton de Kock’s 53 was the only score of any substance from the spineless South Africans, who had three men run out in a wretched performance.

‘Very sad’AB De Villiers was especially

culpable as he threw away his wicket for the third time in a miserable tournament for the

South Africa captain.“We normally don’t bat that

way. We never got going. It’s very sad obviously,” said De Villiers.

After the flurry of South African run outs, India were lucky not to follow suit at the start of their chase.

Dhawan called for a single that was never on and David Miller narrowly missed the stumps with Rohit Sharma not even close to making his ground. Sharma celebrated his escape by smashing a four and a six off successive balls from Kagiso Rabada.

Montreal

Lewis Hamilton revived his bid for a fourth driver’s world title

yesterday when he cruised to victory in the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

It was the three-time champion’s sixth victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve -- where he claimed his maiden triumph in 2007 -- as well as his third this season and the 56th win of his career.

Hamilton took full advantage of his 65th pole position and led from lights to flag to finish 15 seconds clear of Finn Bottas who, in turn, was 15 seconds

ahead of third-placed Australian Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull.

It was the Mercedes team’s first one-two finish of the year and clear proof of their recovery after a disappointing weekend at last month’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s win cut championship leader and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel’s advantage to 12 points after the Ferrari man lost out at the start and, after an early pit stop for repairs, fought back to finish fourth.

Vettel’s front wing was damaged when he was passed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull at the start, the Dutchman

running in a strong second place until he retired with electrical problems after 11 laps.

Mexican Sergio Perez finished fifth after a bruising battle with his Force India team-mate Frenchman Esteban Ocon, who was sixth.

Finn Kimi Raikkonen finished seventh in the second Ferrari ahead of German Nico Huelkenberg of Renault, with local hero and teenage rookie Lance Stroll of Canada taking ninth for Williams and Frenchman Romain Grosjean 10th for Haas. (AFP)

England lift U20 world titleSuwon

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored and Freddie

Woodman saved a penalty as England beat Venezuela 1-0 to win the Under-20 World Cup yesterday, ending the nation’s 51-year wait for a global trophy.

Everton striker Calvert-Lewin became only the third England player to score in a World Cup final after Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters in 1966 -- the last time England won a world title at any level.

England captain Lewis Cook, who plays for Premier League side Bournemouth, received the trophy from FIFA president Gianni Infantino before hoisting it high above

his head to spark frenzied celebrations from England’s Young Lions.

After Calvert-Lewin’s goal on 35 minutes, Cook’s side

withstood a ferocious second-half onslaught in Suwon, South Korea, with goalkeeper Woodman dramatically saving Adalberto Penaranda spot-kick

16 minutes from the end.“We really had to

battle that second half, Venezuela put us under so much pressure but the

players defended for their lives,” said England coach Paul Simpson.

“At the end of the game, when the referee

blew that whistle, we knew we are the world champions,” he added. “We’ve waited 51 years to be able to say that again as an England team.

“It’s an incredible feeling and I don’t think it will ever go away.”

There were extra celebrations as England striker Dominic Solanke, who is newly signed for Liverpool from Chelsea, was awarded the Golden Ball for player of the tournament.

Solanke scored four goals in South Korea and joins a stellar list of past winners that includes Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Luis Figo and Paul Pogba, the world’s most expensive player. (AFP)

Fuglsang outshines Porte, FroomeBonneville

Astana’s Danish rider Jakob Fuglsang outshone

defending champion Chris Froome and Australian Richie Porte to win the final stage of the Criterium du Dauphine and claim overall victory yesterday.

Fuglsang, a silver medallist in the road race event at last year’s Rio Olympics, went into the stage in third place.

But he managed to overhaul his rivals on a gruelling mountain ride, 115km long over three cols (Saisies, Aravis, Colombiere) before a final climb to the finish line at the Plateau de Solaison, high in the Alps.

The 32-year-old Dane soloed to the stage win, finishing 12sec ahead of Ireland’s Dan Martin. Crucially, overnight leader Porte was 1min 15sec off the pace and Froome, who started the ride in second, a further 21sec adrift.

Fuglsang’s victory meant he leapfrogged Porte in the overall standings, the Australian claiming second at 10sec with Martin rounding out the podium by 1sec from Froome, the three-time Tour de France winner.

“It’s amazing! I don’t know what to say. Even with the jersey I can’t believe it, I’ve been close to the yellow jersey many times in my career,” Fuglsang  said, dedicating the win to his pregnant wife.

“We tried to keep our positions on GC and it came down to a big big fight for the overall victory.

“We planned it very well with Fabio (Aru) attacking (with Alejandro Valverde on the Col de la Colombiere) and everything went in our favour.

P23 Hamilton roars to victory

Nadal wins

Paris

Rafael Nadal coasted to a record 10th French Open title yesterday,

demolishing Stan Wawrinka in a brutally one-sided final which also earned the Spaniard a 15th Grand Slam crown.

Nadal, 31, triumphed 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 to become the first man in history to win the same major 10 times.

His collection of Slams now stands just three behind great rival Roger Federer, a staggering statistic coming just a year after he quit Roland Garros with a wrist injury.

Playing in his 22nd Grand Slam final, Nadal triumphed in Paris without dropping a set for a third time.

He also lost just 35 games in total and only six in the final, his most comprehensive victory since allowing Roger Federer four games in the 2008 final.

“It’s really incredible. To win La Decima is very, very special,” said Nadal.

“I am very emotional. The feeling I have is impossible to describe. Nadal was joined on the presentation by his uncle Toni, his coach since boyhood, who is stepping down at the end of the year.

“Without my uncle I would not have won 10 trophies,” said Nadal who will rise to two in the world rankings on Monday. “For me to be here for many years is difficult to describe. I come back and see people I have a good relationship with and it’s very special.

‘Rafa, just too good’“It’s difficult for me to compare this to any other event. You are always going to be in my heart.”

Wawrinka, bidding for a fourth Grand Slam title, hailed Nadal as an opponent and sportsman.

“Rafa, I have nothing to say -- you were too good,” said third seed Wawrinka.

“You are a great example and it’s always been an honour to play against you.”

It was the 22nd Slam finale for Nadal; just the fourth for Wawrinka, the oldest man in the championship match in 44 years.

Sunday was also the first time since 1969 that the Roland Garros final had featured two men over 30.

Despite having spent more than five hours on court getting to the final, 2015 champion Wawrinka had the first break point in the third game. The 32-year-old couldn’t take it and it proved to be the only break point he earned all afternoon. From there, it was all downhill.

Nadal was unable to convert four break points in the fourth game. No matter as he broke through for 4-2 and then went to set point in the eighth game after a relentless forehand barrage sapped the will out of Wawrinka. A backhand which sailed long gave Nadal the first set with the Spaniard having crunched 10 winners to Wawrinka’s four while committing half the unforced errors.

Nadal forced Wawrinka into another forehand error to break for 2-0 in the second set before the Swiss halted a run of seven games lost with a hold for 1-3. But the song remained the same, Nadal taking the set in the ninth game, just moments after Wawrinka, who knocked out world number one Andy Murray in the semis, had destroyed a racquet in utter frustration.

First game of the third set and Nadal broke again as the man who stunned him in the 2014 Australian Open final suffered further damage. Nadal was soon a double break to the good for 4-1, held for 5-1 and then claimed a huge slice of history when Wawrinka limply dropped a backhand into the net. (AFP)
