With just 10 days to go until the start of the Clipper 13-14 Round the World Yacht Race, the fleet are pictured setting

off from the Solent past the iconic Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth Harbour for St Katharine Docks, Tower Bridge, London.

Locals, friends and family turned out to see the departure which included an impressive parade of sail, ahead of race start practice, marking the beginning of the crew’s adventure to take on the unique 40,000-mile challenge.Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, chairman and founder

of the Clipper Race waved the crew off. He said: “Thanks to a tremendous effort by the Clipper Race team, skippers and crew, all twelve Clipper Race yachts were able to parade down the Gosport waterfront and out into the Solent with their mainsails set. “And what a great sight they made. This was the first time all the skippers had manoeuvred the new Clipper 70s in close company and they made a very good job of it.”

The fleet’s journey to the Thames includes a final Level 3 training course, with the yachts scheduled

to arrive at Tower Bridge on Friday afternoon 23 August.

The Race Village in St Katharine Docks opens to the public on Saturday 24 August. Open boat tours of the Clipper 70s will be available until 30 August, from 11am until 6pm each day, along with a full schedule of race related activities, food stalls and entertainment.

The Clipper 13-14 Race fleet departs St Katharine Docks on Sunday 1 September. Leg 1 comprises two

races: a sprint to Brest, France and then over 4,800 miles to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

At 40,000 miles this is the world’s longest ocean race and takes almost a year to visit 15 ports on six continents, including Qingdao. The Olympic sailing city will also boast an entry again; the fifth time the Chinese city will be represented around the world. For more information visit www.clipperroundtheworld.com

Erica has just come back from her second lot of training on the Clipper yachts in the UK. Initially she was trained here in Qingdao with the rest of the Chinese team who are going to

be sailing in the race. The team completed a first level introduction to the yacht and how it handles and gained experiences in general sailing techniques on the yacht. Erica explained that there won’t be a Chinese team but that rather the Chinese sailors will be split up amongst the fleet in order to give them the best experience. Clipper have spent a lot of time and money to ensure that not only will it be the voyage of a lifetime but they will come back with a whole range of skills, knowledge and understandings. Erica will gain experience in trimming and navigation and general sail handling on the yacht. She will be able to use her English language skills to develop cultural understandings

from a range of countries but more importantly use her excellent communication, sailing and cooking skills to give people an insight into the complex customs and culture of China.

Erica is one of the few Chinese sailors who do not get sea sick. She found the cold a problem when she went to the UK to train but even in strong winds and aggressive seas never felt sick. No doubt she will be a valuable asset to the crew and the skipper of the boat.

Qingdao wishes our fit, strong, young sailor all the best. She is an inspiration to people all over the world and especially women.

Erica, one of Qingdao’s long term young sailors, has just come back from training for the Clipper round the World race. She is a young lady who has been working hard volunteering for both private and government organisations to get experience in the industry. In addition to studying full time at University she has been working, volunteering and sailing in many of the major sailing cities in China. She is known by many of the high profile sailors and officials as a hard working and bright young lady.

A number of high profile crew changes and two additional team entries still to be announced for the Extreme Sailing Series™

Cardiff presented by Land Rover, sees the Act shaping up to be one of the most closely contested of the Series to date, as the fleet prepare for four days of Stadium Racing hosted by the Cardiff Harbour Festival, over the UK Bank Holiday weekend, 23-26 August.

After a down-to-the-wire battle between close rivals Alinghi and The Wave, Muscat at Act 5 in Porto just three weeks ago, the teams are now tied on points at the top of the overall Series leaderboard. While the Omani team has chosen to keep the same crew, Alinghi will welcome Olympic gold medallist and two-time ISAF World Sailor of the Year Anna Tunnicliffe. Sailing in the ‘fifth sailor’ spot, a position designed to allow an amateur, young sailor or women to race, Tunnicliffe, who last sailed in the 2012 Series finale with GAC Pindar, said: “I am very excited about returning to the Extreme Sailing Series. The sailing is so fast and so exciting! The biggest thing I learned was how important it was to just be consistent. Getting a simple start and good results lead to great overall standings. The boats are very physical and the decisions have to be extremely

quick. So having a plan well ahead of time helps everyone’s lives out.”

On the overall Series leaderboard, the double Olympic gold medallists of Red Bull Sailing Team remain in third position despite the efforts of the Danish duo of SAP Extreme Sailing Team who have been pushing the team hard over the last two Acts. Red Bull Sailing Team’s tactician, Hans-Peter Steinacher spoke about the importance of bettering their performance in Cardiff: “It is important for us - after the bad results in Qingdao and Porto - to sail with a clear mind and sail consistently, taking it race per race. Our team is strong and we have a lot of energy and spirit. We will show that in Cardiff”.

After handing the reigns of Realteam over temporally in Porto to Pierre Pennec where the team finished on the podium for the first time, Jérôme Clerc is back in the driving seat of his Swiss entry in Cardiff, this time having recruited the expertise of French sailor Tanguy Cariou - a familiar face on the

Series as a former Alinghi crew member. Speaking about the team’s latest addition, Clerc explained, “We know Tanguy very well. He has been active on Lake Geneva and in the Extreme Sailing Series for a long time. He will obviously bring in his great experience, and help us carry on progressing. It is always interesting to share other sailor’s experiences and points of view whilst keeping the focus on the fundamentals of our team. We feel like we are on the right track, and making steady progress!”

Potentially one of the most powerful teams on the starting grid will be aboard GAC Pindar, where it is all change with four of the five regular crew fighting hard in San Francisco for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Regular tactician Brad Farrand (NZL) is set to step up to the challenge of skipper and helm with final crew decisions still being made. Farrand explained, “With Will and the other ‘young ones’ competing at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup we have lined up an exciting squad for Cardiff which

Page 10: Qingdao Expat Magazine September 2013

Qingdao Expat magazine - 10

includes Søren Secher and Thomas Hedegaard from the SAP youth team and Tom Blampied from our New Zealand match racing team. We are in a great position to be able to decide the final crew member between Olympic silver medallists Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark and Team GAC Pindar’s very own four-time World Match Racing Champion Ian Williams, who will all be with us in Cardiff and as the event draws nearer we will be making a team call on the final crew member”.

After Cardiff the fleet will head to Nice, France, for the penultimate Act of 2013. Following the earlier postponement of the Istanbul Act in June, Event Organiser OC Sport had hoped to reschedule it to September. Unfortunately one of the teams could not agree to the rescheduled dates, and without the full agreement of all the teams for a relatively

late addition to the season’s planning, the decision has been reluctantly made to cancel. OC Sport look forward to taking the event back to the stunning venue of Istanbul in the future.

Looking ahead to the Series finale, recent well-publicised circumstances in Rio de Janeiro have forced the organisers to reconsider the location of the final Act of 2013. Whilst there will still be Extreme 40 VIP and media activity in Rio before the Act, the organisers will announce details of a new final Act 8 location in Brazil on the original published dates of 14-17 November.

Shanghai offers sights and experiences

ranging the full spectrum from “ye olde Shanghai”, the early 20th century era and of course some of the world’s famous skyscrapers and buildings that have now become the typical postcard photo. People flock to Shanghai for its shopping and nightlife but if you wish to be taken back further in time, then here is an idea for you.

ZhuJiaJiao ancient town is about one hour’s bus ride west of Shanghai centre. To the west of Shanghai city is a delta of twisting river outlets, providing great waterways for trading many centuries ago. There remains an active town today. Its arched bridges and tiny lanes date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This

TRAVEL INFORMATION:Special Bus Line from People’s Square (RMB 9, 1 hour and 45 minutes)

Special Bus Line from Puan Road Bus Station ( RMB 12, 1 hour and 10 minutes)

Qingdao Travelwater town is also known as Pearl

Stream. You can take the public bus from downtown Shanghai (see details below) and the single ticket will cost you a maximum 12RMB. The bus will arrive at another bus terminal in the same named town. However, upon exiting the bus terminal, follow on foot the street signs directing you the short ten-minute walk to the entrance of the ancient town. Do not be surprised to be invited to ride in a rickshaw – the choice is yours! (about 20RMB.)

The area is quite well organized for its scores of annual visitors; there is a Tourist Information Centre on the outskirts. Here you can pick up a map showing you the named lanes and locations of temples, pagodas and gardens. The high arched bridges are symbols of its era and once you tread these stones you enter the enchanted and (virtually) untouched old way of life.

Many of the narrow lanes are the passages leading to homes and their fronts have opened up to have stalls selling the usual

treasures of China. Generally these are respectfully dressed to display their wares. Turning corners you encounter one scene after another that lure you into its history and culture. You may opt for a calming paddle on a local’s boat, serving as a water taxi. Zigzagging from one point of interest to another it can really add to the experience. At the Tourist Information Centre you can purchase an all-inclusive visitor’s ticket that allows you into many points of interest and a boat ride too. Expect to pay about 80RMB for the longest route, which gives entrance tickets too.

There are numerous local eating houses and surprisingly even a beautiful and “environmentally-blended-in” Starbucks on the outskirts! If you enjoy soaking up the old China and meandering, collecting artistic photos for your album, then this is going to give you all that – and I hope a little more too!

ClASSIC POTATO PANCAKES(latKeS)This recipe makes approximately 25 latkes (serves 4-6)

INGREDIENTS • 5 medium to large potatoes• 1-2 onions• 3 eggs• ¼- 1/3 cup flour or matzah meal• 1-2 teaspoons salt• ¼- ½ teaspoon pepper• Olive, peanut, or canola oil for frying

METHOD1. Peel potatoes. This can be done in

advance (for a few hours) if you keep the potatoes in cold water.

2. If using a hand grater, grate the potatoes and onion on fine side of the grater. Otherwise, cube potatoes and onion and process in a food processor or in a blender with a little bit of water. Drain excess water right away, and squeeze out any remaining liquid.

3. Pour the potato-onion mixture into a large bowl and add the eggs, flour, and spices. Tip: add the flour a bit at a time and mix well, until the mixture thickens and sticks together.

4. Pour oil in a large pan to a depth of ½ -1 inch, and heat on medium-high flame. Alternatively, you can use oil spray on a Teflon pan.

5. Lower the flame once oil is sizzling hot (when bubbles form around a wooden spoon inserted into the oil) and add several tablespoons of the batter (one heaping tablespoon per latke).

6. Fry until golden brown (approximately 5 minutes) then turn over and fry on other side until golden brown as well (another 2-3 minutes).

7. Drain latkes on plate covered with paper towels to absorb the excess oil. Continue to make latkes, using more oil as needed.

8. Serve with sour cream or applesauce on the side. Greek-style yogurt.

Note: You can replace some (or all) of the potatoes with the same number

BRUNETTESThe very fashionable right now “ Ombre” look always adds interest to your hair while keeping it natural too. Lightened ends that blend from your natural colour to lighter ends, which can be vibrant and exiting or subtle and toned. All depending how daring you wish to be !!!

Why not add some light copper or warm chocolate highlight slices

BLONDSin between your regular blond ones? These can be a little bold to add texture, dimension and a more edgy feel to your blond flowing locks !

RED HEADSSpice up your auburn hair with some intense rich copper highlight pieces and combine them with a scattering of deep coffee or caramel colour slices to add more dimension and depth to your colour, making you look natural but vibrant too !!

DARK / ASIANTo add texture and interest to a very dark natural colour and to avoid creating something “fake” add some rich edgy purple chunky highlight pieces and if you want to go further, then some light ash brown pieces too!! These are through the longer top layers and hairline, keeping the lower layers your natural dark colour. This keeps it natural but adds dimension and texture to dark hair !

For those less daring why not let the Hair Doc add a few “random” colour pieces to your hairstyle? Subtle or vibrant, that little signature couldmakeallthedifference!HappyAutumneveryone!
