The Burch Family: All is Well!By Kate Ripple ’76

When I listed the Burch Family as “missing” in our last Connections newsletter, I received a call from Mary Constance “Connie” Burch O’Leary ’57.

“We’re here!” she said. “We’re just all over!”

Indeed, Mike ’58 is in Mississippi, Tim ’64 is in Colorado and Jeff ’66 is in South Carolina – only the girls, Kathleen ’61 and Connie, remain in Wisconsin. And the Burches are continuing the line: “I have four kids and six grandkids, Mike has three kids and twelve grandkids, Tim has four kids and five grandkids, Jeff has

four kids and four grandkids, and Kelli [Kathleen] has two kids and four grandkids. We’re having a family reunion right now!”

“We lived over near the Griffiths on Hillcrest. I remember Msgr. McDonnell. The priests would come to dinner, and, boy, my mom would drill us on our manners! I remember the sister who would tuck her habit in her belt and play baseball with us. That was unheard of at the time. What was her name…?” [If any alumnus remembers, we would love to know it.]

Connie remembers her father, who was not Catholic: “When he met my mom, his parents didn’t want him to marry her because she was Catholic. He never converted, maybe to keep from upsetting his parents, but he would help us with our homework and knew every answer to the Catechism. And every Sunday he would precede us up the hill to church.”

“Susan Wehrle is my best friend. There were a lot of good friends – Nancy Faulhaber, Steve Rowley, Dave Handel, Steve and Sarah Hill, Jay Voss, Barbie Palm, Lou Ann Topp, Sandy Colvin, Marcy Harrington and Carol Ahern, and I’m sure I’m probably forgetting some. Some of my cousins went to QP, too – the O’Malleys [Sally ’61, Bob ’64,

Mike ’66, Denny ’68 and Colleen ’72]. We came from the seven O’Malley farms in Waunakee … it was all Irish up there.”

Thank you, Connie, for letting us know the Burch family is still growing and remembers QP School fondly!

Class of 1965 Celebrates 50-Year ReunionBy Tom Martinelli ’63

The Queen of Peace Class of 1965 gathered at the Queen of Peace Parish Festival on September 19 to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate 50 years after their eighth grade graduation. The class numbered 107 in June of 1965.

Kevin “KC” Conlin, who attended the reunion had nothing but positive comments: “We had a good turnout [40% of Madison area classmates, 18% of all] and it’s wonderful to see where they all are now. I sure am glad someone’s keeping track of those old pictures and class lists, and all of that. That’s great stuff to look through.”

The tour was a highlight: “Mark Quinn [current principal] led it. The addition went on in 1960 when I was in Sr. Chabanel’s (Mary Dolan) 4th grade class. I had Sr. Klement Mary in 6th and 7th grade, and she was great. Those nuns had such a profound influence on us. I was an altar server then, and I’m an altar server now. We asked to go in the 8th grade room. Everyone had memories of running into a pillar in the basement gym, playing some sport [before the new gym was built].”

With a special perspective – his two children (Ruth, 7th grade, and Ken, 4th grade) currently attend QP School – Kevin’s classmates where asking him, how has the school changed? “I told them our kids are getting a good education. It hasn’t changed that much.…”

Class of 1965 alumni (L-R): Jim Schmelzer, Mark Mackesey, Jane Schumann Qualle, Jim Block, Jean Bauhs Shaw, Joe Plazewski, Carly Ehly Schmelzer, Keith Topp, Craig Bjelde, Jim Dowling. Not pictured: Karen Banaszak, Kevin Conlin, Tom Crone, Jim Dresen, and Bob Speth.

Offering the Gift of the Sacraments to Every ParishionerBy parish member, Vicky Franchino

Like most high school juniors, Grace Penwell (daughter of Colleen Murphy Penwell ’81) has a schedule that could best be described as “crazy.” If she’s not at cheerleading practice, she might be at music lessons, horseback riding or gearing up to assist Verona High

School’s girls’ varsity basketball team. And, if it’s Sunday, you’re most likely to find Grace at Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace.

“When I told kids Grace was going to be Confirmed with her class, you should have seen how their eyes lit up,” says Cheryl Horne, head of QP youth ministry, grades 7-12. “They’ve experienced God in a new way because of Grace and know Confirmation wouldn’t have been the same without her.”

That’s because Grace’s typical teenage life has one very atypical element: epilepsy. First diagnosed as a toddler, Grace has survived a nearly two-decade journey of appointments, hospital stays, medications, surgeries and therapies. But she’s never let her illness define her. Colleen describes Grace as “joyful, kind and a treat to be with.”

“In this sacrament,” adds Horne, “each confirmand receives seven great gifts, one of which is courage. Grace lives courage in a way that most of us can only imagine, every day of her life, and her fellow students see God and courage differently because of her.”

Grace has been an active member of the QP community since she was a young child. “Queen of Peace is a foundation for our family,” says Colleen. “Faith is a big part of Grace’s life. Students have readily volunteered over the years to partner with her to help her prepare for the sacraments or learn to be an altar server. And being part of QP has meant that we were never alone when Grace had to deal with illnesses or surgeries: staff and students knew what we were going through and were there to support the entire family.”

Bequest Will Allow Purchase of Large Band InstrumentsBy Kate Ripple ’76

The Our Lady Queen of Peace School Band program was recently notified it is the recipient of a $12,000 bequest from the Betty J. Smith Living Trust. The funds will be used for new instrument purchases.

Betty died September 11, 2014, at age 90. Though Miss Smith was a long-time parishioner, QP band director Christine Eckel, who is in her 19th year teaching at QP, had never met Betty.

Representatives of Miss Smith’s estate indicated Betty had wanted a donation to go to local music, and what better place than to benefit her own parish?

When Mrs. Eckel heard about the bequest, she felt, Completely shocked and humbled, surprised, tremendously grateful and blessed! I never imagined such a tremendous gift.”

“We’re going to purchase instruments that we don’t have and aren’t available for rent at the local music stores,” Eckel explained. “The prices for these instruments are high – $2,000 for an electric piano (ours is dying or dead), about $3,000 for a vibraphone, $3,500 for a tuba and $4,200 for a bassoon – and that’s at the school discounted price! We could never have afforded them in our budget. We may not be able to buy them all [with this gift], but we’ll get estimates and do our best to get further discounts.

“Larger percussion instruments are important to young percussionists because they help them learn to read music. Percussion students normally take home a rolling percussion kit and a bell kit. I always encourage students to learn an instrument they like the sound of. The sound is very different, and sometimes less attractive to their ears than large-scale percussion.”

“One of my goals is to keep the band program affordable, and this will be a big help,” continued Eckel. “Parents already pay extra band tuition and many students have to rent their instruments. Smaller instruments are less expensive, and we sometimes buy those used. We’ve received donations before for band instruments, including from the School & Family Association. We were very grateful to purchase a marimba with the last large donation we received.”

Our Lady Queen of Peace wishes to again express deepest gratitude to the family, dear friends, and estate of Betty J. Smith.

Though Kevin Conlin ’65, insists that Sr. Germanus O’Donnell, OP, is still living, Tom Mueller ’65 wrote in to say that, in his historical research for books he writes, he found Sr.’s obituary. She died April 14, 1994, at age 91. Tom writes books about Wisconsin men and

women lost in our nation’s wars. The most recent is Duty, Honor, Country and Wisconsin, which covers the Civil War to Afghanistan.

Tim Devine ’62 wrote in to say he and his wife Elizabeth are to become grandparents! They have moved to Indiana to help Daniel and Jamie with the child. They recently took a two-month trip to Italy where they prayed with seminarians from the North American College. Tim commented, “Even with all the difficulties and sufferings which we and others experience, let us thank God for all the good and beautiful things we have and continue to experience. Gloria in excelsis Deo!”

Sandy Colvin Wittmeyer ’57 (through 6th grade) “would love a reunion” for the classes of 1950–61. Who’s with her? Contact Kate Ripple ’76, 608-231-4612, [email protected].

Judy Noltner Cooper ’55 lives in Brownwood, TX.

Barbara Watts Ploetz ’54 contacted us to share info on the “forgotten” class of ’54, which had to leave QP after 7th grade in order for construction to begin on more school rooms to relieve crowding. Barb tells us that, after her husband died a few years ago, she decided to do some things she had always wanted to try. She succeeded at two tandem sky dives, but could not complete the solo dive. While up in the plane, she was chewing gum. The instructor asked her if she could swallow it before her jump? She said, “Yes I can, I went to Catholic school!” The whole plane of 26 people started to laugh. Actually, Barbara says, she “didn’t chew gum at QP school - who could afford it?” Thanks for the story Barbara!

Diane Colby Seaver ’53 wrote to say, “When Queen of Peace was built, a number of us from Blessed Sacrament School transferred there in 1948-’49 because of the school boundaries. The 8th grade at Queen of Peace was discontinued at the end of ’53, so some of us went to the Edgewood Campus School and some went to the Madison Public Schools. I graduated from Edgewood High School in 1958, as did Jean Connors and Kathleen (Kathy) McCloskey. I graduated from the UW-Madison in 1962 and have lived in Virginia since 1970.”

You Did It QP! YOU MADE THE MATCH!

FINAL TOTAL $539,989Thank you to all who donated to meet the $250,000 anonymous Challenge Match gift to the QP School Endowment! Thanks to your generosity, the Endowment corpus has grown by 50%, providing that much more support annually to QP School!

These funds will help maintain the school, advance curriculum, and keep Catholic education affordable for more families – giving while they grow! Give yourselves a pat on the back.

And many, many thanks, to our anonymous donor.

Two QP Girl Scout troops voted to give their cookie sale net income to the School Endowment Match—over $1,250!
