QS Stars Business Schools - Introduction

About QS Intelligence Unit

An alternative to rankings, QS Stars is a rating system, designed to shine a light on business schools for their diverse and specialist strengths. Participating business schools are awarded with a star rating based on their performance in an audit.

QS Stars also offers an international standard for comparison for any participating institution. This is particularly useful for business schools focused on boosting their international marketing efforts. The award is licensed to an institution to highlight its star rating in all visual communications.

The QS Intelligence Unit (QSIU) strives to be the most trusted independent source of intelligence in the global higher education sector.

Since 1990, QS has conducted research in a range of education and employment areas, beginning with a global survey of MBA employers.

QS has been producing the World University Rankings annually since 2004, achieving 20,000,000 web visits and international recognition.

With operations in London and Singapore, QSIU delivers detailed analysis and is committed to the key values of rigorous integrity, independence and authority.

Increasing public interest in comparative data on universities and organizations, combined with growing demand from institutions to develop deeper insight into their competitive environment, has led QSIU to develop QS Stars, adding to its portfolio of distinct services.

Trusted. Independent. Global.

QS Stars™ – © 2011 QS Intelligence Unit (a division of QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd)

The QS Intelligence Unit has, through rigorous and independent data collection and analysis of performance metrics as set out in the QS Stars™ methodology, rated xxx as a five star institution.

The QS Stars™ rating system is operated by the QS Intelligence Unit, the independent compiler of the QS World University Rankings® since 2004. The system

evaluates universities across a wide range of important performance indicators as set against pre-established international standards. By covering a broader

range of criteria than any world ranking exercise, QS Stars™ shines a light on both the excellence and the diversity of the rated institution.

QS Stars is rapidly growing into the chosen evaluation system for universities worldwide. With institutions from over 20 countries globally participating in the QS Stars program, it is an increasingly recognized international standard.

QS Stars employs a rating method designed to allow a university to shine irrespective of its size, shape and mission. At the end of the audit process universities are awarded a stars badge and certificate for their overall performance and are also awarded stars badges in each of up to 11 competency areas. The number of stars awarded at the overall and category levels will resonate with international students, parents and university staff, and become a valuable asset for your marketing collateral and outreach.

Like star rating systems for restaurants, QS Stars is designed so that an overall one star is still very much an outstanding achievement. A wide range of indicators are used to measure the performance of an institution enabling institutions with key strengths often overlooked in other evaluations, to shine.

This pre-assessment report draws on the data currently held by the QS Intelligence Unit for Sample University and provides a summary of the likely results if no further data were provided. It also serves as an indication of the amount of further data collection work required to complete the audit process.

“ntU is participating in a QS Stars audit to establish our strengths as a university across a broader set of criteria than can be measured in any ranking system, and to provide valuable information for our many stakeholders: students, employers, fellow academics and our local community.”Bertil Anderson, president, Nanyang Technical University

“I particularly like your section on ‘innovation and entrepreneurship’. there is no evaluation of these aspects of a business school at present, yet they really matter to candidates.”Fernando Contreras, senior program manager, Thunderbird

“I believe QS’ new B-School ratings will be extremely valuable for schools of high quality at less well known universities. It will help them to demonstrate their credentials and specialist strengths in a way not achieved by accreditation systems.”Neelum Bashir, business development manager, Bradford University Management School

“QS Stars is a really good idea. There is a real need amongst schools.” Jeff Hunter, Temple

“you may be interested to know that we used QS data – along with a number of other datasets – to analyse our performance and prospects ….. the outcome was that our University council approved a research investment strategy of some AUD$40m over five years and a new investment cycle approach to research development.”Sue Rowley, University of Technology, Sydney
