As a recovering global economy and an influx of companies supporting Qatar’s infrastructure development drove the tourism sector forward, both business and leisure tourism saw healthy growth. The GCC remains the primary inbound market, crossing one million visitors for the first time ever to register a rise of 14.4%. Europe and Asia too are proving to be fast-growing markets for Qatar’s tourism sector, with a net increase of 9% in international visitors. Qatar Tourism Authority oversaw the introduction of a range of events and activities during the year, which have had a noticeable impact on tourism. In the leisure sector, the Eid Festival attracted more than 140,000 visitors from across the GCC. A growing number of other festivals, international performances, exhibitions and sporting events drew a steady stream of tourists, in addition to allowing Qataris to reap the benefits of a rich and diverse tourism sector in their country. Focus on Developing the Tourism Sector On the business front, the first phase of QTA’s agreement with the United Nations World Tourism Organization to develop the policies, regulations and strategies to consolidate Qatar’s nascent tourism sector has come to an end and phase two has already been signed. QTA also opened its second representative office in Europe, with more planned in key markets around the world. In the meantime, QTA remains an active participant in all major international trade shows and events. Concentrated efforts are underway to promote synergistic partnerships between the public sector and the private sector as well as between various public sector entities of Qatar. By capitalising on unique opportunities to fill gaps in the market, a range of new products, services and tourism experiences are The 2013 Statistics reflect some of changes and trends taking place in the sector. A considerable number of hotels and hotel apartments opened for operation when several landmark hotel properties were closed for substantial renovation. While there are some changes in the market demands for rooms in Qatar, all indicators show a sustained growth in industry with hotels posting an average of 65% occupancy, up from 60% in 2012, despite an overall increase in room inventory. Average hotel room rates fell in Quarter 4 of 2013 against the same period in 2012 due to the COP18 event held in December 2012, inflating rates and occupancy. However, rates are also responding to demand changes in the light of successive increases in room rates in each quarter over the year. Average Room Rates for the year remained strong, as the below statistics indicate. 4-STAR HOTEL REVENUES 2013 Tourism Statistics Report Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Total 64% 68% 58% 67% 50% 57% 68% 68% 60% 65% 2012 2013 2012 2013 2012 2013 1st Quarter 183 M 219 M 5-STAR HOTEL REVENUES 2012 2013 Difference Q1 766,829,825 948,097,600 181,267,775 23.64% Q2 794,950,677 951,673,827 156,723,150 19.71% Q3 617,852,266 703,152,497 85,300,231 13.81% Q4 989,170,752 977,017,468 -12,153,284 -1.23% Total 3,168,803,520 3,579,941,392 411,137,872 12.97% 75 Hotels 49 Hotels & Hospitality Sector Statistics Hotel Revenues: 4 & 5–Star Properties GCC VISITORS COMPARED TO 2012 REACHING 1.090 MILLION 14.4 % Tourist Arrivals: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region TOTAL ARRIVALS FOR THE YEAR P.O.Box 24624, Doha, Qatar, T: +974 4499 7499, F: +974 4499 1919, www.qatartourism.gov.qa FOLLOW US www.facebook.com/qatar.qatartourism www.twitter.com/QTOURISM Qatar Tourism Qatar Tourism Authority QTourism 65% ANNUAL AVERAGE HOTEL OCCUPANCY 7.1 % 1.27% OVERALL INCREASE IN ROOMS 8.16 % TrevPAR (Total Revenue Per Available Room) AVERAGE ROOM RATE PER DAY +170 ROOMS IN Q4 - 2012 RevPAR (Revenue Per Available Room) QR 372.40 QR 398.85 2nd Quarter 179 M 185 M 3rd Quarter 144 M 153 M 4th Quarter 212 M 183 M Total 718 M 740 M 1st Quarter 584 M 729 M 2nd Quarter 616 M 767 M 3rd Quarter 474 M 551 M 4th Quarter 777 M 794 M Total 2.45 B 2.84 B HOTEL REVENUES IN Q4 -1.23% OVERALL HOTEL REVENUES ANNUAL EARNINGS FROM THE SECTOR 13% Q4 EARNINGS QR793.94 MILLION EARNINGS QR183.06 MILLION & QR 977.017 MILLION QR 3,579.941 MILLION REVENUE IN Q4 REVENUE IN Q4 Hotels Under Construction International Tourists: Global Hotel Apartments 124 Total NEW 21,294 in Hotels in Hotel Apartments UAE BAHRAIN SAUDI ARABIA 116,670 123,457 102,729 113,530 574,127 673,319 KUWAIT 58,369 77,321 OMAN 100,961 102,569 TOTAL 952,856 1,090,196 2012 2013 GCC VISITORS COMPARISON 2012 – 2013 Year on Year Averages All figures are in Qatari Riyal All figures are in Qatari Riyal SAUDI ARABIA 61.76% UAE 11.32% OTHERS 26.9% 9% INTERNATIONAL VISITORS 13.42% TOTAL NUMBER OF VISITORS TO QATAR REACHING 1,327,524 VISITORS COMPARED TO 2012 14% BUSINESS VISITORS FROM ASIA 75% BUSINESS VISITORS Hotel Rooms & Units 2013 GCC AUSTRALIA ASIA AFRICA ARAB OTHERS SOUTH AMERICA NORTH AMERICA EUROPE Q1 294,296 196 38,731 1,158 8,803 36 1,361 1,310 9,896 Q2 238,962 296 38,104 1,081 9,656 34 1,049 1,886 9,300 Q3 285,234 230 36,353 722 6,490 18 838 870 6,733 Q4 271,704 199 39,287 1,083 9,144 17 1,370 1,145 9,932 Total 1,090,196 921 152,475 4,044 34,093 105 4,618 5,211 35,861 1,327,524 in the process of being created with the support of QTA.
