Quality, Care and Commitment A proud member of the Toronto Learning Community

We had a fantastic time last week celebrating Education Week 2021. The spotlight shone brightly on all classes through our social-media posts and as a school we celebrated our outstanding progress in reading and numeracy. When covid restrictions are eased we would like to invite parents onsite for open classrooms as we had planned as part of last week’s festivities.

Over the next fortnight a series of videos will be available for parents and carers to view on our evidence-based approaches to teaching reading in the early years. There are four videos, each between 3-5mins in duration:

Part 1 – The science of reading at WWPS

Part 2 – Decodable readers at WWPS

Part 3 – An insight into a reading session in K-2 at WWPS

Part 4 – What a home reading session can look like – advice using decodable readers

Our evidence-based approaches are backed by current NSW Department of Education and university academics advice. Our team has engaged with substantial professional learning on the Big 6 of reading and our efforts are already starting to yield significant student progress.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORTCongratulations to our debating team for their victory over Warners Bay PS last week. Our team had another convincing victory and are now on their way to the semi-finals. Shaye, Gabby, Regan and Tynan have done a remarkable job with 3 wins on the trot guided by the expertise of Mrs Russell. Fingers crossed for the semis!

Over the last fortnight we have recommence our K-6 gardening club. This is run at lunch and recess on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and is facilitated by Mrs Di Lenardo. Students have been engaged in various activities including turning soil, weeding, mulching and planting our new crop. If you are a keen gardener and have any seedlings you’d be willing to donate to our gardening club, please get in contact with the school.

3-6 camp Recent advice provided by the NSW Department of Education has forced us to cancel our 3-6 school camp to the Great Aussie Bush Camp at Tea Garden. We are busily trying to search for an alternative venue or full day excursion. Stay tuned for details.

WWPS is where amazing happens.

YR 4/5M

4/5M have been enjoying reading a text called ‘The Rabbits’ by John Marsden and analysing the very detailed illustrations by Shaun Tan. The is about the European settlement in Australia but uses rabbits representing the Europeans and possums representing the Aboriginals. We have been linking this with our history and learning lots about Australia’s history. We have been busy doing lots of research on the European Settlement and how the colonisation of Australia had many effects on Aboriginal people. This has allowed us to connect and infer more meaning from the text.We love getting sweaty brains in 4/5M. We have been focussing on our multiplicative skills this term which is a very important lifelong skill. Safe to say our brains have been very sweaty with all our new learnt strategies!

In accordance with advice from NSW Health, parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

NSW Health has requested that schools encourage anyone who is unwell or has even mild flu-like symptoms, to arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Students and staff with flu-like symptoms need to be tested and provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school.

Students who do not undertake a COVID-19 test will not be permitted to return to school for a 10-day period. Additionally, they must be symptom-free for at least 3 days prior to returning to school.

Students who have seasonal allergic rhinitis or another condition that presents similarly to flu-like symptoms are still required to get tested for COVID-19 and return a negative test result. Where their symptoms continue beyond 10 days, students should provide documentation from their GP confirming their symptoms are typical for their condition. If the student develops new or changed symptoms, they should get tested for COVID-19.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

This term WWPS students presented their speeches across all classes for our whole school public speaking competition. Well done to all students who spent time crafting and rehearsing their speeches. Four students were then selected to represent their class in the finals which were held on Tuesday the 27th of July. Sadly, due to COVID restrictions we were unable to have family or carers on school grounds to watch these finalists present their speech, however our K-2 and 3-6 students were great audience members. All speakers spoke very well, which made it a tough job for our adjudicators Mr Englefield and Mrs Peterson to judge who will proceed to the next round and represent our school in the Inter-schools zone public speaking competition. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions this competition has been postponed until Term 4 or until restrictions have eased.A big congratulations goes out to all of our finalists as well as our winners:Early Stage 1 – Hugo and Edie.Stage 1 – Blair and Lucy.Stage 2 -Alexander and Will.Stage 3 - Laicey and Bronte.
