THE 2014 OPERATOR CHALLENGEBack in 1998, 35 competitors from eight different countries competed

in the inaugural Caterpillar Operator Challenge. Created by Göran

Hjerpe and Bob Woodley, the competition was established to

support dealers and encourage the creation of Operator Clubs

in each dealer’s respective territories. Ultimately though, the fun

and excitement came through showing the incredible precision

and skills of operators and a wide range of Cat

® machines.

NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKSThe battle to be the best is returning for 2014. The event begins on a local level with dealer-organized competitions that take place in the first half of 2014.

Once operators advance from preliminary rounds to the final competition, they are put through a series of six to nine rigorous challenges that test speed, accuracy and safety awareness. Not only are the live competitions an opportunity to demonstrate precision and reinforce the importance of well-trained operators, they are also a chance to showcase the most advanced Cat machines and technology (such as Cat Grade Control and Payload) in action.

This year’s challenges will feature four days of demanding, intricate maneuvers using a wide range of machines such as articulated trucks, excavators, front

loaders, skid steers and mini excavators. Adding to the difficulty, each test is timed and operators will be judged on their use of technology and fuel consumption.

During the awards dinner finale, the top three operators will be recognized, but only one will walk away with the grand prize, a new Cat 300.9D Mini Excavator. To learn more about event schedules, specific machine challenges and how to participate, visit our Facebook page. n

DEAR READER,

This is the second issue of Cat® Magazine for 2014, and while the range of topics that has been put together is impressive, one theme stood out – sustainability, the power of endurance and our commitment to work alongside dealers and customers to help build a better world. For decades, we’ve been pushing forward with efforts to reach several sustainability goals, and I am proud to say we are close to meeting many. Examples include reducing customer greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent, meeting 20 percent of our own energy needs through alternative, renewable sources and sending zero waste to landfills. Also noteworthy is the fact that Caterpillar is included in the 2014 edition of RobecoSAM’s Sustainability Yearbook, a publication that identifies companies that are strongly positioned to create long-term value. Our lead story focuses on how Cat customer Istaç A.Ș. is tackling the challenging job of waste management in Istanbul while focusing on environmental responsibility. Also featured are two unique stories about machine rentals – one from Romania, and the other from the UK – that demonstrate our commitment to expanding rental solutions and giving customers a reliable rental brand experience across the globe. And, when it comes to new product introductions, the 950 GC and M Series medium wheel loaders, along with the 374F L and 390F L hydraulic excavators, are helping customers reduce costs, save fuel and increase productivity in a number of innovative ways. Finally, be sure not to miss our story about the return of the Operator Challenge. This issue shows what we mean when we say Caterpillar is Built For It™! I hope you enjoy this edition.

PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTIONS DELIVER PURPOSE-BUILT EQUIPMENT IN ISTANBUL

When it comes to waste management in Istanbul and the surrounding areas, one company handles everything. That company is İSTAÇ Inc., the largest of its kind in Turkey. Founded as an affiliate of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 1994, the environmental management company does it all. Some of the areas in which it works include municipal waste disposal, managing construction, hazardous and medical waste as well as, collecting and disposing of waste from ships and the seas.

Cat Magazine 5

Page 6: QUALITY CONTROL RENTAL EQUIPMENT IN …...demonstrate our commitment to expanding rental solutions and giving customers a reliable rental brand experience across the globe. And, when

İSTAÇ Inc. doesn’t just handle and dispose of waste. It’s also heavily involved in recycling, the re-use and revaluation of waste material and in producing energy. The company recycles everything from packaging to organic waste, which is composted, and creates electricity through the collection of landfill gas and waste incineration. “Whether it’s waste, re-use or recycling, we work fully in line, and in many cases beyond European Union environmental legislation practices. Being a responsible, caring company and improving the environment in which we live is part of who we are,” said, Alpaslan Kiriş, Technical Service Manager.

THE SIX D8T PURCHASE PROCESSHandling this breadth of waste is an enormous undertaking. In municipal waste alone, İSTAÇ handles more than 15,000 tons every day. That’s about 5.5 million tons per year for Istanbul’s 16 million residents. To help handle that waste, İSTAÇ recently purchased six D8T track-type dozers.

These powerful machines are made to handle the demands of the waste handling industry and have a reputation for best-in-class versatility and productivity, exactly what İSTAÇ needed. And, even though all the D8T come with special waste handling guards and seals to protect and keep debris from damaging vital machine parts, İSTAÇ’s waste handling needs required additional specifications.

Some of those non-standard specifications included:• New generation engines to lower fuel

consumption and limit CO2 emissions• An automatic drive and lubrication system• A specially designed blade for increased capacity

and added protection for moving parts• Special shielding, coatings and paint since İSTAÇ

works with chemicals that cause premature wear

In addition to the hundreds of modifications and specifications, İSTAÇ also has a standard practice of conducting pre-delivery inspections. Nothing was different for the delivery of the six new D8T.

Thankfully, Caterpillar already has a thorough process so we wanted to take full advantage of that. Pre-inspecting equipment before leaving the factory helps resolve issues on the spot,” added Alpaslan. “This is why we went to Brazil with our technical people and the team from Cat® dealer Borusan Makina. We made a couple of adjustments while we were there and felt confident the machines would be delivered without a problem.”

In this case, the machine inspections were a three-step process. First, the team from İSTAÇ traveled to the Caterpillar factory in Piracicaba, Brazil to make sure their specifications were being implemented as required. “Most of the other machines we deliver do not have specifications to this extent. Regardless of how much or little customers ask for, we still go through this process to make sure they receive machines in excellent condition and as requested,” said Özgür Kocatürk, Sales Manager Industrial Segment for Borusan Makina.

“We appreciate customers wanting to do a pre-inspection. We are very customer focused and invite them to see our processes and strict quality control. I think it’s a good idea for them to see the extent of checks and tests that we do in the factory. After all, we’ll be working together and we don’t want them to have any problems.”

Once the six dozers were built, a second phase of inspections took place at Borusan Makina, in Istanbul. “We went through several steps to ensure the quality of the machines at our branch before they were sent to İSTAÇ. This is an important step in the process because it’s our last chance to correct any issues before they get on a cargo truck.”

Finally, the six D8T were inspected as they were coming out of customs before final delivery to the worksite in Istanbul. “Now that the six dozers are here, we’re ready for them to get to work,” added Alpaslan.

“When the machines were first ordered, we received six pages of requirements that consisted of about 200 modifications and specifications above and beyond what we were already doing.”Özgür Kocatürk, Sales Manager Industrial Segment for Borusan Makina

A strict daily cleaning and maintenance routine is followed to keep machines clear of debris.

SUSTAINABLE CONTRIBUTIONSBesides handling municipal waste, İSTAÇ is working on a number of energy generation projects. Currently, the company is converting waste into electricity and has 36 generator sets that produce an installed capacity of 48 megawatts. The goal is to double that over the next 20 years.

In fact, İSTAÇ’s efforts in generating electricity from gas are included in the United Nations’ top projects. “We also work very hard to reduce CO2 emissions and are successful at doing so. We have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 1 million tons annually, which corresponds to taking 600,000 vehicles off the road every year,” added Hüseyin Sari, Machine Maintenance Chief.

They are also working to diversify disposal methods and will soon have an operational incinerator that can handle 3,000 tons of waste each day and reduce the amount of material that goes into landfills. It’s estimated that the incinerator will create an additional 60 to 80 megawatts. Construction is slated to begin in 2015 and completion is scheduled for 2018.

Additionally in the area of sustainability, İSTAÇ takes in excavation and demolition waste. The material is then used to create green spaces such as parks.

A PUNISHING APPLICATIONThe six D8T began work in March 2014, and they were put to the test right away. One of the biggest issues in handling the waste in Istanbul is that the material is not standard.

So, to help keep their machines up and running, İSTAÇ performs daily checks and cleaning. For regular maintenance, however, they turn to the experts at Borusan Makina. “We are in touch with İSTAÇ all the time, so whatever they need for support, we are there to help. We have an agreement for preventative and regular maintenance, including spare parts that help protect the machines and increase uptime. We also have a technician on site, should anything need immediate attention,” adds Özgür.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGESOne of İSTAÇ’s strengths is that it’s a fully integrated company. But no matter how smoothly the company operates, challenges still arise.

“We do run into different kinds of problems and emergencies and we have developed solutions to handle those so we are very flexible. They are most often minor, but can include environmental incidents like hazardous waste accidents,

additional pollution, natural disasters and unexpected demolition waste. Because we are a municipal company, we can respond to the ministry’s request quickly,” said Alpaslan.

And, when it comes to the economic crisis, İSTAÇ faired well. “In the field of waste management, we didn’t really feel the effects. However, when there are domestic issues in Turkey we feel them very deeply. The last one was in 2001, when we were collecting 20 to 30 percent less waste. Since then, our business has been growing. Our financial structure is very strong, although in 2008, we did see the cost of our loads increase from about $20 to $25 million. But that did not affect the course of our business,” Alpaslan confidently said. “We’ve grown six-fold over the past 10 years.”

Moving forward, Alpaslan is positive about the company’s direction and proud about what İSTAÇ does for the area. “Our main goal is to serve Istanbul, the environment and the surrounding region. We want to do this using the best machines and technology we can in the most optimum manner possible.” n

“If you are working at a normal construction site or in a mine, you know what your material is like. Here, and in the waste industry, it’s very unpredictable. It can be soft, hard and even acidic. That’s why it’s important for us to have machines like the D8T. They can handle different waste material of all kinds.”Alpaslan Kiriş, Technical Service Manager

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION // M SerieS

MeDiUM-SiZeD WHeeL LOADerS THAT DELIVER BIG

For the new product introduction of the Cat

® M Series line of

medium wheel loaders, we spoke with MWL Product Application Specialist Thierry Brasseur and Fabrice Faivre-Rampant (left), Director of Faivre-Rampant quarries, who is currently using a 972M XE. Pictured also is Evelyne Faivre-Rampant, Co-Director.

in this article we focus on the 966M, 972M, and 982M, as well as the 966M Xe and 972M XE. Thierry filled us in on the innovations and improvements that have been incorporated into the machines, while F. Faivre-rampant gave us his thoughts from a customer’s point of view.

WHY DID CATERPILLAR CREATE THIS NEW M SERIES?Thierry: “Meeting the new Stage iV engine emissions regulations for europe was one of the main reasons. it was also a great chance to implement further improvements and increase the machines’ value for our customers. in fact, most of the improvements were made as a result of customer feedback.”

HOW HAS FUEL EFFICIENCY BEEN IMPROVED?Thierry: “By itself, the eU Stage iV engine with ‘transparent’ regeneration helps lower fuel consumption. in addition, we updated all M series machines with a lock-up clutch torque converter. This allows lock-to-lock shifts, which optimizes fuel efficiency and shift smoothness while achieving higher speed on ramps in load-and-carry applications. The new 966M Xe and 972M Xe, each with an advanced power train and no torque

converter, set new records in fuel efficiency (a 25 percent improvement over the M Series) while simplifying the operator interface and operating technique.“

F. Faivre-rampant: “This new 972M Xe is a true revolution. We have experienced a 20 to 25 percent saving in fuel, compared to an equivalent model. This is really important today as the fuel price constantly rises. And, of course, it’s more environmentally friendly, which is also important.”

HOW DO HYDRAULIC SYSTEM UPGRADES PLAY A ROLE IN FUEL EFFICIENCY?Thierry: “There are several next generation hydraulic upgrades we made for the standard machines. The main valve weighs less and has improved performance and serviceability. Plus, the new hydraulic pump has larger displacement for increased flow. That means, for example, the speed of the lift arm can be maintained with the engine running at a lower speed. Again, saving fuel.”

“Overall, the new system gives the M Series range a 10 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, compared to the K Series.”

.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION // M SerieS

“M Series machines are more productive, faster, smoother, easier to operate… and burn less fuel.”Thierry Brasseur, Product Application Specialist

An easily accessible switch allows operators to open the cab door from the ground.

More room and a touchscreen display are just two cab upgrades.

WHAT ADVANCES INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY?Thierry: “Production is improved through increased power and torque, the lock-up torque converter i mentioned earlier and an improved ride control system. Operators can move faster and complete more cycles while consuming less fuel.”

F. Faivre-rampant: “i’ve been working in the quarry business for 25 years and this machine is very fast and ideal for transport. it’s very productive and uses much less fuel. The operator can even monitor how much fuel is being consumed in the cab.”

Thierry: “The new axles, with a manual, front-axle differential lock (on the 950M - 972M) also enhance productivity. The advantage is that it can transfer up to 100 percent of the torque to the non-spinning wheel. That creates more traction when digging and in poor underfoot conditions. And, since it’s manual, the system does not engage when the machine turns so there is no tire drag – even at full articulation.”

HOW DOES THAT COMPARE TO THE COMPETITION?Thierry: “With some of our competitors, the differential cannot be engaged when a

wheel is slipping. The operator has to stop the machine then engage the lock. it’s a big work cycle disruption. With our system, operators can engage the differential on the go without any effect on machine life.”

WHAT ABOUT CAB UPDATES?Thierry: “improving the K Series cab, which was great to begin with, we’ve optimized visibility and added a remote door opener switch that facilitates cab access and egress. There is also a 15-degree inclined ladder, a larger door with an integrated handrail and automatic cab light activation when the door is opened.

The M Series also features a new, user-friendly multifunctional touchscreen display. This allows operators to customize machine settings, to identify obstacles through the rearview camera and to load trucks correctly the first time thanks to the integrated scale system, which is optional. Using this, operators can set the load limit for the truck they’re filling, measure the weight of the material in each bucket load and determine what remains to be loaded. This way the truck is not under loaded or over loaded.”

WHY SHOULD CUSTOMERS BUY A NEW M SERIES?F. Faivre-rampant: “Our 972M Xe is extraordinary for its high productivity and low fuel consumption. Our operators love everything about it. it’s very responsive and quick, has smooth gear changes and operation, as well as a comfortable cab.”

Thierry: “These machines offer the best return on investment and lowest owning and operating costs. There are currently 21 machines running in the United States and 15 operating in europe, which have accumulated more than 85,000 hours. Customers have been delighted by the improvements we made to the entire M Series range. The increases in power, productivity and traction plus the reduction in fuel consumption are what stand out. it’s a machine that’s easier to use and more affordable.” n

THE CAT ® PARTSTORE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESSACCESS MORE THAN 800,000 PARTS, 24-HOURS A DAY

Available since 2001, the Cat

® PartStore™ is an e-commerce solution that

streamlines the method for ordering, purchasing and delivering Cat parts for EAME do-it-myself customers. That includes every Cat part from new to used, as well as hoses, Cat Classic™, remanufactured and dealer exchange (reman) parts.

PartStore is available in two versions: PartStore WEB which is accessible using an internet browser and PartStore Integrated Procurement (PS IP) which is an e-procurement solution directly embedded in the customers’ Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Both versions are securely connected through one internet server with most EAME dealers.

“With the click of a mouse, customers can connect to PartStore any time, from anywhere and in real-time to order genuine Cat parts. PartStore is an excellent time saver. And, more importantly, the system helps customers save money,” said Niklaus Gerspach, PartStore Deployment Manager.

SAVING CUSTOMERS TIME AND MONEYOne reason for the cost savings is the fact that PartStore transactions are automated. As a result, time-intensive manual tasks can be eliminated and the savings can be passed on to customers.

Swiss dealer Avesco has been using the system successfully for the past seven years. “Right from

the beginning, customers found PartStore quicker and easier. They have 24/7 access to technical information and parts availability as well as lists for parts that are needed for service intervals,” said Stefan Sutter, Avesco Managing Director.

Currently, a majority of all Avesco parts orders are through the dealer’s PartStore. What’s even more impressive is that 98 percent of those orders are delivered in a single day. “Parts ordered before 17:30 in the afternoon can be delivered by 13:00 one day later,” Stefan proudly stated. “Thanks to efficient delivery, customers are experiencing less machine downtime.”

Xavier Chauvin, Workshop Manager at Swiss construction company Perrin Frères SA is taking full advantage of the system. “We place 70 percent of our orders through PartStore. I would say it’s about twice as fast as before using PartStore. No phone call is needed so we don’t have to wait for price quotes or stock reports. Plus, it’s easier to plan for repairs.”

Xavier also went on to say that because orders are allocated to a machine’s serial number, he can better manage cost control and have a more accurate repair history for each piece of equipment. “In our line of work, having the right part is critical. An immobilized machine costs

WHAT YOU WANT, WHEN YOU WANT ITAccording to Niklaus, there are no restrictions as to what kind, size or type of Cat parts can be ordered through PartStore. “Customers can order everything from Cat batteries to buckets, although some local specific dealer supply offerings may apply,” he said.

At Avesco, Stefan has found that 60 percent of the parts his customers order are items such as filters, engine and wear parts. “Here, we have a daily sales limit of CHF 5,000 (about €4,000 or $5,500) through PartStore.”

AN INNOVATIVE IMAGEParts aren’t the only things PartStore delivers, however. It also delivers an intangible quality – innovation. “Customers don’t want to work with an old fashioned organization. This kind of technology has become normality and the customer feedback I’ve gotten is very positive. We’ve seen a steady increase in the use of PartStore. It’s helped us build market share as well as better relationships with our customers,” Stefan said with a smile. n

® C Series telehandlers

DELIVER RELIABILITY FOR HEWDEN

Recently, Cat

® dealer Finning UK won the largest single purchase of telehandlers in Caterpillar’s history. A total of 463 TH414C, TH337C and TH417C machines went to national plant hire company Hewden, one of the largest plant and equipment hirers in the UK, headquartered in Manchester.

The deal also represents the largest single order of Building Construction Products (BCP) that Cat dealer Finning has ever completed. It’s worth £25 million, or more than €30 million. “Getting back to core business with Hewden has been a key goal for the Finning team and was led by our strategic plant hire Account Manager, Andy Davies,” said Jason Howlett, Finning Equipment Solutions Director.

So why did Hewden choose Cat machines? Product Specialist Roy Vinden, explains. “Hewden puts a huge emphasis on keeping their customers happy. For them, and their customers, it’s all about reliability and durability. We were able

to demonstrate those attributes and give them a cost effective package with reliable machines that also have new generation, low emission engines and provide operator comfort and safety.”

Backing up that reliability is an uptime guarantee. And, as a part of the deal, Hewden also has full-service contracts on each machine plus support from Finning’s dedicated condition monitoring team, Finsight. This combination helps Hewden control and predict costs more efficiently.

COMPLETE SOLUTIONSFinning is currently delivering about 30 machines each month. In turn, Hewden

is delivering for its customers. The new telehandlers make up four of the most popular equipment lines for Hewden. “These products are in high demand from customers and form part of our core fleet proposition. Our investment will ensure we are able to say yes to even more hires and satisfy even more customers,” said Kevin Parkes, Hewden CEO.

Like Hewden, Finning has also seen growth in the telehandler market thanks to machines like the TH414C and TH417C and the eight other models that make up the C series line. “We are helping our customers through a true equipment solution. Not just by

We have already seen more people recognise the performance benefits of using the equipment. With this Hewden national fleet rollout, there will be many more who can take advantage of the new range.”

IMPROVED FEATURES, SERVICEABILITYCaterpillar is well known as a company that provides equipment solutions to the earthmoving and heavy equipment industry. However, the Cat C Series range of telehandlers, first launched in October 2012, were specifically designed for the agricultural customer by bringing together all the elements of a telehandler most suited to their needs including operator controls, cab comfort features, powertrain responsiveness and Work Tool attachments suited to agricultural applications. These have proven to be very popular since release with sales to this segment increasing significantly over the previous year.

The latest C Series telehandlers have now been released to specifically suit the construction segment, in particular, large rental companies just like Hewden who look for financial returns through low operating costs, durability and ease-of-use that makes these machines quick to get comfortable with for new operators.

WHAT IS FINSIGHT?

“These machines are easy to operate, which is important because there will be many operators that have different experience levels using them,” added Roy. “There is a single lever joystick that does nearly all the operations, including boom functions, stabilizers and transmission. Service can be done on the ground. Fuel efficiency is good. And, compared to competition, our boom speed is a little faster, so that helps with productivity.”

The renewed partnership and Cat C Series telehandlers are delivering more than reliability for both Hewden and Finning. Hewden recently ordered 109 excavators that are scheduled to be delivered over the next 6 months. This is a further stamp of approval from a national rental company that Caterpillar and Finning are doing the right things to support the rental industry. n

RENTAL EQUIPMENT IN ROMANIA TAKES FLIGHT

After launching its rental offering in 2008, Cat® dealer Bergerat Monnoyeur Romania has seen the demand for rental equipment slowly but steadily increase. “Even though we have a culture of ownership here, our customers’ habits are changing. That’s partly due to the economic situation. But customers are certainly looking more and more to rent equipment,” said Sebastian Chertes, Rental Manager at Bergerat Monnoyeur Romania.

One such customer is Intelkasim, a niche company that specializes in construction and repair for airports, including runways, hangars and control towers. Currently, Intelkasim is renting a 140M motor grader, an H130S hydraulic hammer, a 262C skid steer and an SW45 wheel saw. “Rental gives us protection from the present economic events worldwide and helps prevent the need to finance through a bank,” said Andi Kadas, General Manager at Intelkasim.

The equipment is being used to help build the Braşov- Ghimbav International Airport in central Romania, which will help develop and expand the area’s industries and tourism providing a boost for attractions such as the popular Poiana Brasov ski area. When complete, it’s estimated that the project will have created about 4,000 jobs and serve one million passengers annually. Designed to handle medium-sized aircraft, the main runway will be 2,820 meters long. Project costs are estimated to be €87 million.

RENTAL EQUIPMENT IN ROMANIA TAKES FLIGHT

Customers might be interested in renting for a number of reasons Sebastian told us. For example, the initial investment required to buy a machine might not be possible at the time. Or, the timeline for a project might not be long enough to necessitate purchasing equipment. “It’s also simply an opportunity for customers to try out machines before buying,” stated Sebastian.

After any rental term is over, customers have the option of purchasing the rented machine(s). As a result, much of what has already been paid in rent can be applied toward the purchase. Another advantage of buying equipment after renting is the one-year warranty through the Cat Certified Used program.

That system is working well for Intelkasim. The company has rented and then purchased five other Cat machines since 2013. “I buy 90 percent of what I rent. Our normal contract is about 10 months, which gives us a real feel for the machines, their reliability and productivity,” added Andi. “We can also be sure the amortization will work out too.”

An additional benefit to renting is dealer-supplied maintenance and repairs. “The most important thing that comes with renting is the Cat team at Bergerat Monnoyeur. They are a team you can rely on, an ally and a partner.”

Many of the machines in the Bergerat Monnoyeur rental fleet have Vision

Link® so the dealer receives a steady stream of machine health information. The goal is to equip the entire fleet with Vision Link by the end of the year. Still, Bergerat Monnoyeur sends mechanics to the Braşov Airport construction site every month to inspect the machines, perform any maintenance and make sure they are working properly.

And, while the rental market is still relatively small in Romania, Sebastian sees that changing. “In my opinion, about 20 percent of our business will come from machine and equipment rental over the coming years.” n

NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION // 950 GC ...............................................................................................

A FULL-BLOODED CAT® WHEEL LOADER WITH GREAT CUSTOMER VALUE

There’s a newcomer to Cat ® medium wheel loaders. It’s called the 950 GC and it gives Caterpillar a dual offering in the 950 size class, alongside the 950H.

The reason behind creating the 950 GC is to provide a different value proposition for customers in lesser regulated countries.

Designed for utility-type and support applications, the 950 GC is a versatile, and productive wheel loader. “The 950 GC is geared toward customers who require a shorter return on investment time frame, but who also want a simple operating interface along with the renowned reliability and durability of Cat equipment,” said Vincent Danloy, Product Application Specialist. “The customers we are reaching out to, see an investment like this more for a project’s lifecycle, not the full lifecycle of the machine.”

Another factor to consider is that many jobsites in regions like Africa, Middle East and the Commonwealth of Independent States are in remote locations. This is why the injection system on the 950 GC has been adapted to operate efficiently with the fuel that’s available in emerging markets.

LOAD-SENSING HYDRAULICSHelping customers save even more fuel, the state-of-the-art, load-sensing hydraulics on the 950 GC only use the amount of fluid necessary to perform an operation. The advantage is that the machine can share the power between the wheels and the hydraulics more efficiently.

Our system has a variable displacement piston pump. So if an operator is using the arms under a light load, the pump will only deliver the amount of oil and pressure needed. It reduces fuel consumption and wasted energy, which is energy that can be used to power the wheels,” said Vincent.

SMOOTH OPERATION950 GC customers will also appreciate the productivity they get from the industry-proven Cat Z-bar linkage and Performance Series buckets. It helps provide deep penetration into the pile and high breakout forces. Plus, its reach and dump clearance is among the best in this size class. This, too, helps lower fuel consumption while making the 950 GC easy to get familiar with.

“Everything involved with the powertrain is made by Caterpillar.”Vincent Danloy, Product Application Specialist

NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION // 950 GC ...............................................................................................

A TRUSTWORTHY TRANSMISSION

From ease of operation to reliability and durability, the 950 GC is 100 percent Cat.

And, when it comes to serviceability, this is one wheel loader that’s perfect for customers who often prefer to perform their own maintenance. “We kept many of the best service features that are found on the H Series. For example, the filters for the hydraulic and transmission oils are located on the side of the machine in one service center and accessible from the ground. We also kept the Scheduled Oil Sampling (S•O•SSM) ports, so machine health can be checked regularly and easily for preventive maintenance.”

“We are trying to complement the 950H with the 950 GC. The goal is to extend our product portfolio to be able to serve a wider customer base. Thanks to a more customer-centric strategy, we are able to do that.” n

Additional details at: www.middleeast-africa.cat.com

One major differentiator separating the 950 GC from the competition is that its entire powertrain system is designed and built by Caterpillar. “Everything involved with the powertrain is made by Caterpillar from the engine to the axle for maximum efficiency,” added Vincent. “It’s much better value as opposed to our competitors who use off-the-shelf components from different manufacturers.”

The 950 GC features an electronically controlled, countershaft transmission that provides smooth, fuel-saving shifts for fast loading cycles and long component life. Heavy-duty axles with inboard, planetary final drives have hydraulically activated wet-disc brakes that provide superior stopping power. They are a big step up from the competitions’ dry-disc brakes, which can hinder machine performance.

MORE POWER FOR YOUCUSTOMER VISITS TO NORTHERN IRELAND ARE ONE OF THE BEST CAT® EAME / CIS DEALER SALES TOOLS

The Caterpillar Larne facility is one of four Electric Power Division locations in Northern Ireland employing approximately 2,100 people. This state-of-the-art facility is primarily used for product development and the final assembly of products including the industry leading range of Cat

® generators, and more

recently, Articulated Truck axles for Peterlee and Cat Wheeled Material Handler machines for Caterpillar’s Industrial and Waste Division. Products manufactured at this site are exported across the globe and are used to support a number of key industries and business sectors.

1975 FG Wilson (Engineering) Ltd. began operations in an old textile mill in Belfast. Initially, the company built industrial generator sets and its first equipment rolled off the production line in 1975. Since then, the company experienced spectacular growth and turned a small, family-run business into one of the UK’s top 100 exporters.

1993 The company moved to its current location in Larne. The 90’s saw two additional production facilities open to directly support the Larne factory. The Monkstown facility specializes in heavy complex fabrications, precision machining and coded welding. The Springvale facility produces light fabrications, complex sub assemblies, sound attenuated enclosures and electrical systems.

1999 The business became a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar and quickly became an integral part of the Caterpillar Electric Power Division in 2005.

2013 The company rebranded all four Northern Ireland facilities and changed the name to Caterpillar (NI) Limited. Larne was selected as the new site to begin building other Cat products, including articulated truck axles and wheeled material handlers.

NEW NAME, SAME COMMITMENT TO QUALITYStep into any one of Caterpillar’s four Northern Ireland facilities and you’ll find a new name, Caterpillar (NI) Limited, but what still remains is a passionate employee base building world-class generator sets to meet the ever-changing needs of customers in every corner of the globe. Continued investment in industry leading manufacturing and assembly processes has enabled the facilities in Northern Ireland to develop into world class operations. All sites use the Caterpillar Production System to ensure high quality products are consistently delivered to the marketplace.

Both Caterpillar and FG Wilson brand generator sets are produced at Larne and its sister plants. The two brands are strategically positioned to meet their individual customer needs. Working in close partnership with the Cat dealer network, the Northern Ireland team provides Customized Power Solutions for their customers, including spare parts, field service, fabrication and training as well as maintenance and repair contracts.

A complete line of generator sets and containerized power modules (ranging from 27 kVa - 2,500 kVa) are built at

Larne to meet continuous or temporary power needs. The equipment is everything project engineers need to properly configure, install and operate power systems for large-scale infrastructure projects such as utilities, hospitals, airports, rail stations and data centers.

That includes integrated, single-source solutions such as UPS, switchgear, generator set controls and ATS to ensure that equipment works together for optimum performance. There are even hybrid power systems for the telecommunications sector that optimize the use of available renewable resources to reduce fuel consumption as well as total owning and operating costs while maximizing system reliability.

In fact, to ensure Caterpillar design and engineer products specific to customer requirements, the Custom Power Solutions group meet with electrical consultants and customers from a wide range of industry sectors on a regular basis. The purpose of these sessions is to share knowledge and fully understand market demands and trends. The Custom Power Solutions group deliver a service that enables a customisable product range, offering full flexibility to their customers’ needs.

MAKING NOISE WITHOUT A SOUNDHelping meet those customer needs is one of Europe’s biggest and the UK’s only anechoic chamber. The chamber sits within the Larne Engineering Centre of Excellence (ECE), a state-of-the-art product testing and validation facility, and is a valuable addition to the facility’s already impressive amount of resources.

This immense, specifically designed echo-free room is used for sound testing that provides detailed analysis of generator noise under free field conditions, meaning there are no reflective surfaces. The results of that testing are used to maximize product performance and reliability and gives Cat Electric Power products a significant competitive advantage.

The chamber was built in 2005 after Caterpillar engineers recognized that such a facility was necessary to remain the product category leader and continue to not only deliver world-class products for customers, but also to meet legislative requirements.

If you’d like to see or hear the anechoic chamber for yourself, along with the rest of this impressive manufacturing facility tours are available. Visitors to

the site are continuously impressed by the skills and expertise of the team as well as the best in class manufacturing and assembly processes. Customers can view their products being fully tested and everyone can see how industry-leading facilities, advanced testing and streamlined processes help create unmatched products.

By the end of the year, a new visitor centre will be up and running to enable dealers, customers and visitors to truly experience the Northern Ireland operations and all they have to offer. The centre will be used for customer, dealer, and internal visits and will consist of a product exhibition area and meeting room facilities. It will also be used for training and marketing activities with groups of customers or dealers as well as product development activity.

And, if all of this isn’t impressive enough, the view outside will be. The Larne facility is situated on a sea cliff and offers spectacular panoramic views across to the Scottish Mull of Galloway, where the North Channel of the Irish Sea meets the Atlantic. n

NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION // 374F L AND 390F L ....................................................................

NEW REGULATIONS INSPIRE ADDITIONAL

IMPROVEMENTS

On January 1, 2014, European emissions regulations required Caterpillar to install their Stage IV engine into equipment like hydraulic excavators such as the new 374F L and 390F L. Rather than seeing the new regulations as limiting, Caterpillar took the opportunity to improve the machines in several areas, including productivity and fuel consumption.

Targets for the 374F L were to maintain production levels and reduce fuel consumption 6 to 7 percent. For the 390F L,

the goals were to improve productivity 5 percent with a minimal fuel use increase of less than 2 percent.

Test results, however, are proving that those numbers are incorrect – and that’s a good thing. “These are preliminary results, but the 374F L saw a 10 percent drop in fuel consumption while the 390F L had a 5 percent increase in productivity and a 3 percent drop in fuel use,” said Cédric Masson, HEX Product Application Specialist.

Most of the fuel savings comes from the patented Caterpillar Adaptive Control System (ACS) for the machines’ implements. Cédric explains, “The ACS on the 374F L and 390F L has four, smaller independent valves that control the same implement rather than one valve. Now,

using the same single joystick, and some clever monitoring software, operators can be much more efficient and accurate.”

The new ACS means fewer drops in hydraulic oil pressure and better flow. The regenerative system captures and re-uses oil. This way, there is less wasted energy when moving implements.

COMFORT, SAFETY AND CONVENIENCEOther key changes are a more spacious cab and a monitor with a 40 percent larger display. Also, because both machines run at lower RPM than their predecessors, fuel consumption is lower and cab noise is reduced by 3dB.

Safety enhancements include better visibility as well as boom and cab lights that can remain on 90 seconds after the machines are shut down.

For ease of maintenance, the 374F L and 390F L get top marks. Fuel filters are

easily accessible. Previously bolted doors are now latched for improved access to the cooling cores. And two large, reversible fans can draw air in or blow air out to clean off debris that may accumulate.

Newly implemented on both machines are quick drains for hydraulic and engine oil. When fueling is required, an optional fast fill port is accessible from the ground. “It’s similar to fueling F1 cars, but admittedly not quite that fast,” Cédric joked.

Even though emissions regulations set this new product introduction in motion, Cédric says, “The purpose is to give customers the most cost efficient solution for mass production. Our main goal was to improve fuel efficiency. I believe we exceeded those goals and advanced our already exceptional position in the marketplace.” n
