Quality Techniques Today's demand for FTTX networks has driven various techniques that allow for quick solutions to the networks, but not always quality solutions meeting the networks. This presentation explores the differences of these techniques and their effect on quality and the ability of the OSP network to meet the future demands of the network.

OSP Construction Quality Items • Vibration • Temperature Variations

– Thermal Line (aka Freeze Line)

• Slack Loops – 5 Loops @ 20x OSD = 0.05dB Loss – Bends after Splice points

• Splices

• Who is doing it in the USA – Google – Verizon – AT&T

• Application – Metro areas – Temporary placement to meet demand – FTTX applications – Drop Cables

ITU-T L.49 Micro-Trench Installation Technique Applies to routes that involve asphalted surfaces such as roads or sidewalks with a base compact materials (asphalt or concrete)

Page 7: Quality in fttx deployments

Micro-Trenching Depth of groove in the asphalt (concrete) not less than 7cm (2.7in) but not penetrating past the asphalt (concrete) layer (Normally less than 20cm (7.5in))

19cm depth groove

Micro-Trenching

Width of groove varies based on cable / duct dimensions but normally 10 – 15mm (.4 - .6in)

Page 9: Quality in fttx deployments

Micro-Trenching • Fiber Cable should be a metallic (i.e. copper)

tube filled with a suitable compound and surrounded by a PE jacket – Optional to place micro-duct and then use

standard micro-duct fiber cables

• The groove is filled in with hot bitumen varying from 100° - 170° C (212°- 338° F)

Micro-Trenching - Weaknesses • Vibration effects • Thermal effects • Limited protection during road renovation • Difficulty during emergency repairs

Mini- Trenching • Who is doing it in the USA

– Most metro applications

• Applications – Metro – FTTX – Long-haul

• Why – Cost – Impact to area and speed

Mini- Trenching ITU-T L.48 Mini-Trench Installation Technique Applied on routes what generally involve asphalt (concrete) surfaces with a subgrade of compact materials

Mini- Trenching • Normal depth: 30 –

40cm (12 - 16in) – Bottom of trench

• Normal width: 7 – 15cm (3 – 6 in)

• Cable or Duct Placement without spacers

• Backfill is by pouring concrete with suitable foaming additives

Mini- Trenching - Weaknesses • Thermal Effect • Vibration • Exposure to damage • Long term satisfaction of transportation

departments due to different wearing effects of the road
