Quality Techniques Today's demand for FTTX networks has driven various techniques that allow for quick solutions to the networks, but not always quality solutions meeting the networks. This presentation explores the differences of these techniques and their effect on quality and the ability of the OSP network to meet the future demands of the network.

ITU-T L.49 Micro-Trench Installation Technique Applies to routes that involve asphalted surfaces such as roads or sidewalks with a base compact materials (asphalt or concrete)

Micro-Trenching Depth of groove in the asphalt (concrete) not less than 7cm (2.7in) but not penetrating past the asphalt (concrete) layer (Normally less than 20cm (7.5in))

Width of groove varies based on cable / duct dimensions but normally 10 – 15mm (.4 - .6in)

Micro-Trenching • Fiber Cable should be a metallic (i.e. copper)

• The groove is filled in with hot bitumen varying from 100° - 170° C (212°- 338° F)

Mini- Trenching ITU-T L.48 Mini-Trench Installation Technique Applied on routes what generally involve asphalt (concrete) surfaces with a subgrade of compact materials


Mini- Trenching • Normal depth: 30 –

40cm (12 - 16in) – Bottom of trench

• Normal width: 7 – 15cm (3 – 6 in)

• Cable or Duct Placement without spacers

• Backfill is by pouring concrete with suitable foaming additives
